Lazarus
Lazarus
David Bowie's musical Lazarus arrives in London following a critically acclaimed New York run.
Selling out in just minutes when it opened off-Broadway, Lazarus tells the story of a humanoid alien driven from his planet by drought. Stranded on Earth, the alien Newton amasses a fortune while trying, and failing, to create a spaceship that can return him home. Experimented on by the government, stuck on Earth and unable to die, Newton lives in melancholy isolation, watching television, drinking gin and eating Twinkies.
A thrilling, wild and fantastical show, Lazarus was written by celebrated playwright Enda Walsh and original spaceman David Bowie, a man at the vanguard of music for fifty years. Based on the Walter Tevis novel The Man Who Fell to Earth, previously adapted into the 1976 fantasy-drama film starring Bowie, Lazarus emerged during a flurry of creativity near the end of the musician’s life.
Showcasing Bowie classics as well as new material from his final studio album Blackstar, directed by the Tony Award-winning director Ivo van Hove and starring TV superstar Michael C. Hall (Dexter, Six Feet Under), Lazarus is a brilliant and fevered dream shot through with spine-tingling music and visual effects.
Playing at the brand-new, purpose-built auditorium the Kings Cross Theatre, tickets to Lazarus are sure to be like gold dust. Don’t miss out, book yours today!

I am a huge Bowie Fan and have been from about 1975. I saw Lazarus on the Fan night in New York. What can I say, the show was amazing and I felt the closest to Bowie, while seeing the show. The performance is a very complex layer of emotions, experiences and links to Bowie, brought together with Bowie’s music, aspects of his life and the continuation of the story of The Man Who Fell To Earth. I felt it was the closest thing to being inside his head and I really hope that this show continues to be performed. Long may it continue to grow and develop. Thank you.

Unfortunately the seats were awful and i could barely see the stage. If anything happened low to the ground (of which there was quite a bit) I had sit right up and peer over the top of the person in front of me to see what was going on. The beginning of the play was quite confusing and didn't make much sense. But then it all started locking into place and it turned out it was great!!!! An inspiring bit of theatre that I think illustrated a man facing a long, drawn-out death, in a constant battle with his hopes, desires and dreams, figuring out what it all means and how to cope with it.

Admittedly I'm a huge Bowie fan. since 1969. long time. Always wondered with awe at his capacity for turning the world on its head, personally and artistically. I've seen Lazarus twice now. the first time I loved it. the second time, last night I adored it. The audience were also more into it which always helps. where I wanted to clap and laugh last time where no one else or hardly anyone seemed to last night, many many more did so tto. i got thibgs from it last night i hardly noticed last time. Anyway. Musically brilluant. the songs the singers and the fabulous musicians . very good to see the band on stage too.All the actors/singers were totally into it and made me able to feel I was watching them in situ. not on a stage. Michael C Hall played a superb part ( great fan of his also) I will not be able to imagine anyone else in the part. His voice, though not as rich and individual as Bowies , he held me captivated all the way through. at times he almost sounded like David at others his own voice displayed its own magical emotion. I can't reccomend this to everyone as its probably not going to please the masses. I need to ask other Bowie fans who have seen Lazarus. For me though it's a little bit more from the Grand Master. I still want more and more from him but that now can never be. He's pulled a master stroke with this some of his very last work. so glad he got to see it. So am I. x

Talented actors and musicians, imaginative technical effects, deeply tedious plot, and very shouty 'singing". After an hour the only question is, isn't he dead yet and does anyone care? Loyal audience applauds Bowie (dutifully) and Michael C Hall (rightly) and there is a great darkly set-piece by Valentine but you really wouldn't want to see this again having gone through it once. Well, maybe if it were 30 minutes shorter.

An unusual musical very different from the gendre . Bowies well known music such as Heros adapted , but good adaptions. First time I have actually listened to the lyrics of Changes. Based on man who fell to earth and 3 themes of 'otherness, ailination and mortality, are woven through this Surrealustic musical .

Although we were quite far back n the theatre ,we enjoyed the performance, particularly the musicThe actual plot was hard to follow ,unless you saw it as a dream sequence or an extension of what was going on in the main character's head .Various existential questions were raised.:Starting with Hamlet's questioning about the afterlife and the purpose of it all .The scene was set in a New York ? apartment ,where the chief props to life was gin in the fridge and the television. Various "friends from his past "walked through the set ,disturbing old memories ,loves and old wounds .Some challenged the main character with his change of life style and the fact he wasn't out there making music , but had withdrawn and wanted to escape .Something violent occurs to one visitor ! After this Hope in the form of a member of his family ?shows him how to think positively and helps him make a spaceship of sorts .Thus he is released and able to fly to the stars from whence ,he decided he had come .

As a Bowie fan I went to see this show with some trepidation, perhaps expecting disappointment with others singing his songs. My wife, not a Bowie fan, joined me. We were both blown away! 24 hours later, having reflected, I can honestly say this is the best show I have seen ever, anywhere, in my 61 years. Superb. Amazing. The cast are 100% excellent. Thank you.

This was my third time seeing Lazarus and again I noticed subtle things I had not spotted before. I love this show Michael C Hall is totally captivating, of course the music is great and all the actors were very believeable. I am very sorry this play is ending in London and I would definitely have gone and seen it again.

This play will not be to everyone's taste, but for me this was the most stunning theatrical performance I have seen in a very long time. Exquisite voices from all of the actors, incredible band, and I have been thinking about it ever since I watched it. Look out for valentine!

The staging is simple and plain onto which clever lighting changed the scenes. The band (behind the stage) were excellent. We were in the middle of row C and felt we were right in the middle of the action. Featuring new and classic songs by David Bowie to tell the story. Outstanding performances from Michael C Hall and Michael Esper.

The script, music and acting in this musical were phenomenal. But a lot of the key scenes take place on the floor of the stage, and incredibly difficult to see if you're toward the back or sat behind anyone vaguely taller than you are. A real shame, but a fantastic show nonetheless.

I found the play very beige and dull. The story was confusing and I felt the performance of music did not do justice to the late David Bowie.

From the moment I stepped into the auditorium and Thomas Newton was already on stage it was clear that this would be a special show. If I say any more it could colour your interpretation of the show, I don't want to take that away from you.

I finally got to see this show before it came to a close and I enjoyed every minute. The cast were fabulous and the story was great. The stage was minimal but a perfect set for the production. I thought the entire performance was gripping, emotional and full of energy. The soundtrack is amazing live and defiantly compliments the show and the story.

Lazarus was an amazing production. I loved every second of it from the brilliant acting, emotion, singing, music, staging.. it was truly mesmerising. I didn't want to leave and had to sit back down in my seat for a while. The impact the show had on me was traumatic but in a way that left me crying with emotion and wanting to stay there to see it all again. This is the best show I have seen and I'm old! 61 and seen a lot of shows in my life. I couldn't fault any thing. Thank you for the very very best x

I never leave reviews but feel compelled to on this occasion. Being a huge David Bowie fan I knew that Lazarus was not going to be your normal run of the mill show, and whilst I accept that it was difficult to follow in places, I thoroughly enjoyed this performance. The actors/actresses, THOSE songs, the whole thing AMAZING!

Absolutely loved this play . So much that I've now been twice . . Well you never know if it'll ever come here again particularly with this great cast & I must mention the wonderful vocals of the two michaels ( Newton & Valentine) their escalating madness is a joy to watch I loved the miminal / neatness of the stage. There is no mistaking David Bowies hands all over this . I would say watching the TMWFTE first will make the story that follows easier to understand. I Think we all leave the threatre with our own interpretations of this show

A show using existing songs is bound to have an air of contrivance about it - how could it not? That said, who cares? Bowie is Bowie, and given that he helped create this himself, how could it fail? Michael C Hall is a class act, incredible presence and skill. The rest of the cast were equally talented. Loved the musicians too. Best bit? Sound and Vision, the only recording of Bowie himself. So glad I saw it.

Lazarus was both thought-provoking and entertaining. The standards of acting ,singing, visuals and general musicianship were all of high quality. It is by no means a conventional piece but it held our attention throughout.

This musical is not to be missed it will have you thinking for days to come. I'm just an ordinary person who took the time to marry d. Bowie in a dream!...... However meeting the man of my dreams after getting life wrong for sooo long enjoyed the realisation of Lazarus with my forever love, understanding the new reality of the meaning of the effects of what effects world news has on our simply lives we embrace love and the lives of all the good things in life and share the good things in our lessons of life with the future generations...... Life is a journey to enjoy! .......Don't over complicate it and share the simplicity of Bowie! X

An interesting if somewhat confusing production. As long as you know the back story, it will make sense. As a play on its own, could be hard to comprehend. Music and performances all great and the staging was clever.
