Stepping Out
Stepping Out
Amanda Holden stars in the stellar cast of Stepping Out, a wonderful and heart-warming comedy.
In an attempt to tap away their troubles, seven women and one man join a weekly dancing class. After a shaky start, the group is barely getting to grip with the basics when they are asked to participate in a charity gala…
Each member of the group has a story to tell, from haughty Vera, mouthy Maxine and uptight Andy to bubbly Sylvia and shy Dorothy; eager Lynne and cheerful Rose and, of course, Geoffrey.
Directed by triple Olivier Award winner Maria Friedman, the cast also includes Angela Griffin, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Nicola Stephenson and Tamzin Outhwaite.
Stepping Out won the Evening Standard Comedy of the Year Award, 1984 and was also made into a musical which became a film in 1991, starring Julie Walters and Liza Minnelli.

Absolutely amazing, such humour made out of such sadness, brilliant how different people can join together to escape their lives with no judgement.

I went on 24th May and thought this show was just adorable, I loved every second so much so that one of my friends couldn't come that day so on 8th June I went again and it was just as amazing the second time round

Amateurish and generally disappointing. My wife and I wanted to leave at the interval but stayed in hope it would get better but it didn't .

Went to a matinee showing, the show had us laughing out loud in places, giggles in others. I am a tap dancing student and some of this was just so us! Very funny - The whole cast was great, Amanda Holden was brilliant - definitely recommend it

a very cute story and excellent players. we were however disappointed as we couldn't hear large sections of the dialogue as the players spoke either facing each other instead of to the audience. maybe they weren't speaking loud enough or the acoustics in the theatre are not good enough. shame.

Having seen the original of this play I was very disappointed last night. Even with accents several of the actresses diction was questionable. Timing for the interaction was just not there. Amanda Holden is meant to be a sad character, not a total butterfly. Apart from one character I could not feel anything towards anyone. Sorry but so End of the Pier.!!

thoroughly enjoyed the matinee we saw, Amanda Holden was totally brilliant and very funny, she has great acting ability, also great performances by all other cast members as well. Loved Mrs Fraser !! Thought each individual character could have had more depth to their story and the dance scene at the end was wonderful but very entertaining and a fun afternoon, would love to see it again

This was an incredibly disappointing production and I have seen much better at local dramatic society shows. The final 5 minutes was quite good but the rest was so dull I almost fell asleep.

Stepping Out is fun from start to finish. Had some real laugh out loud moments and definitely struck a bell from my past tap dancing classes. A brilliant feel good show.

It isn't as good as the film - jokes are hammered home and story lines are left unresolved. However, the cast hams it up with enthusiasm, Amanda Holden is very funny and the last number makes up for everything.
Disappointed
May 6, 2017
This was a present, what a disappointment! I felt embarrassed that I'd bought the tickets! Not cheap either! The scriptwriter set the play in 1983 and it felt like the script had been written in1983 too . Stereotypical characters and the repetitive practising of the "pretending not to be able to dance" group in the first half very boring. Last 10 mins were good.

Late start due to Amanda leaving it until 15 minutes before the show was to start to say she was indisposed!! Show started 15 minutes late after slow hand clapping. 3 understudies fluffing their lines poor value for money and no appoliges
Judith

3 of the main cast were not on due to being "indisposed" . Amanda Holden pulled out at the last minute and we then had to wait 15 minutes for the show to start while they got an understudy in. No announcement was made as to what was happening or why the show was starting late, it was only upon asking a staff member at the end that I found out what had happened. Understudy was not prepared, and all of the understudies were fluffing their lines and I felt the whole show was a bit painful to watch. I understand sometimes understudies have to go on but for 3 of the 4 stars of the show not to be on I feel is unacceptable and understudies should be of the same standard as the proper cast member and I feel they were not up to standard at all. Very Disapointed.

3 cast members missing for the matinee performance! Felt like an amateur production for which we would have paid £10.00 in the village hall . Did we feel cheated .....YES!

We travelled up from the Isle of Wight to see Amanda Holden, she should have been in performance, there were 4 understudies for our show. First part felt like we were in a village hall watching amateur dramatics, 2nd half was better. The actual moral of the story was there. But cost of tickets plus £11.50 booking fee direct to theatre, was overpriced. We also saw Kinky Boots and American in Paris. Both cheaper and better. Sorry...but you asked for review.

Three of the main roles were played by understudies as a result the performance lost its way with important lines lost or garbled - the show was over 15 minutes late and the audience responded by behaving very badly - I even heard slow hand clapping before the curtain rose. I love the play and the set was very clever. It seemed that the three missing players have scant regard for afternoon performances - what a shame. Don't offer matinees if you don't feel like playing in them. Felt like a show in trouble.

Disappointed that Amanda Holden appeared to have been indisposed last minute. We didn't think the understudy was very good and didn't play the role as well as Amanda would have done. We were so looking forward to seeing her!! However, these things can't be helped and the rest of the cast were excellent and the play was fun!

Great show but very disappointed to have had 3 replacements, one being Amanda Holden (my reason for booking) having booked in the knowledge that she would be in the production on that date. Show quite short also.

We enjoyed the show but left disappointed. We booked the tickets a while ago as a treat for our joint birthdays but we're really disappointed that 3 of the main headline actors (including Amanda Holden) were not participating at the performance. The understudies did a fine job but we wouldn't have booked and spent all that money if we had known. Also the show started 15 Minutes late.

I personally prefer musical theatre, but I appreciate the talent of the actors, and the work involved in putting on a production with all that is required with the sound and lighting. This is a beautiful little theatre which should be treasured.

Overall, the show was enjoyable - funny and entertaining. I saw a performance with two understudies, who were good in their parts. As someone who uses hearing aids, I was impressed with the clarity and projection of the dialogue. However, I didn't think that the direction was great. The characters were quite one-dimensional, and not really believable. The scenes where we get to see the sadness and pathos in their lives in the second act were not really credible or moving, and it looked like someone had decided to get that bit over with in order to get on to the "performance" at the end. There was a distracting amount of unnecessary furniture moving in the scene changes. As a device to change scenes and bring the cast back on, it would work well once, but not so many times. I admit I had a cheap seat, and it was good value for money. Not sure I would feel that if I had paid for a premium seat.

Saw Stepping Out last night and loved every second; the outfits, the cast, the storyline, the sheer enjoyment of the audience, it was a simply brilliant show. Vera was hilarious, everyone knows a Dorothy (brilliantly played) & just loved Maxine & Mrs Fraser! We were lucky enough to see Emma Hook as Sylvia (where do I know her from?!) and she was outstanding, as was Jessica - Alice McCluskey. And the rest of the cast; Josefina, Dominic, Lesley & Marcia - just fabulous. Really feel good show, thank you!

A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon watching this funny, touching, and moving play. A fantastic ensemble cast, a brilliantly realistic church hall set, transforming at the end to a suitably shabby 'stage' where the show within the show is performed. Congratulations to everyone involved and thanks for an uplifting couple of hours.
