RSC - Love's Labour's Lost
RSC - Love's Labour's Lost
Direct from acclaimed runs in Stratford-Upon-Avon and Chichester, the RSC’s Love’s Labour’s Lost transfers to the West End in an uplifting pairing with Much Ado About Nothing (Love’s Labour’s Won).
This beloved comic romance about young love is brought to London by acclaimed theatre company the Royal Shakespeare Company. Shakespeare’s classic story is moved to the summer of 1914 where, determined to pursue a life of academic investigation, the King and his friends vow to stay clear of women for three years. However, the men’s noble resolve is immediately tested when the Princess of France and her ladies-in-waiting turn up.
Love’s Labour’s Lost is a joyful comedy that revels in watching an unachievable vow fall by the wayside, cheekily proposing that the study of the opposite sex is the greatest of all pursuits! It is not all high spirits, however. As this masterfully crafted production ends, our lovers face life apart, not yet aware that the Great War is about to change things forever.
A gleeful and emotionally charged comedy, the RSC’s Love’s Labour’s Lost will play in a blissful double bill alongside Much Ado About Nothing (Love’s Labour’s Lost). Playing for a strictly limited fourteen-week run at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket, don’t miss your chance to see this perfect match, book your tickets today.

Knowing the play fairly well I was amazed at the end of the 4 young men going off to fight in the first world war. The acting in both plays was excellent and enjoyable, but the plays were different.

Beautiful old theatre. Stage sets excellent. Actors very good. One of those plays you can't help but enjoy Very witty and funny at times.

Excellent. A very entertaining production that had me completely absorbed. Having read a critique that said the play was not very popular and was slow-moving and rather dull, I wasn't sure what to expect. But the actors presented it so well that I need not have worried. The roof-top scene in particular was brilliant!

A nice pairing of LLL and MAaN the latter was the livelier of the pair. Love's Labours Lost did not flow as well.

Setting a play about sexual passion in the most sexually repressed period of British history was always going to make the premise of the play look strained, and while the costumes and sets make fine acting performances easy on the eye, they did produce some weird results: namely, at the end of the play, the lead males, having just sworn to live as hermits for the next 2 months, suddenly appear dressed as though they are about to die on the Somme. Why? Commentary about this play tends to focus on the fact that it isn't one of the most popular in the canon and that its high wit makes it a tough listen. This, admittedly slick, production - with often machine-gun fast delivery - does little to address either point, other than to make the audience understand why the points are made.

A wonderful fresh interpretation of LLL using all the RSC's skills to deliver the text so beautifully and use music and dance to enhance the humour and pathos brilliantly. A comedy that isn't afraid to be deep and poignant.

I thought Shakespeare would be hard work but found this thoroughly entertaining. Have also see much ado which is also excellent.

A great play! But it was hard to follow in places for our 12 year old. Although she said she enjoyed it and now wants to see Much Ado....

Beautifully staged . Lisa Dillon as Rosaline and Nick Haverson as Costard are particularly good.

Thankfully there were captions, some performers spoke very quickly. Otherwise enjoyed the play

It is still a good production with some lovely moments, but it has got too slick - no lack of professionalism, but they have been doing it for a long time and it is not one of the Bard's greatest plays. Some of the lines were taken so fast, they were inaudible.

We loved it. It was funny, easy to follow and relevant to our life today. Well acted, brilliantly directed, great set and costumes.

Transported to another world for the afternoon and setting it in Edwardian era worked a treat. Great to hear every word without apparent amplification, music that enhanced rather than overwhelmed the action, wonderful costumes, magnificent sets. Can't wait for Much Ado!

After Much Ado yesterday I couldn't believe I could see something better today - but the performance of Loves Labours Lost at least matched it. Again the performances were utterly believable and the little additions in direction all the way through were laugh out loud funny when they were meant to be and at appropriate times really moving. The decision about when to set it was really clever and the costumes and overall look really beautiful. The ending, which I guess is really tricky to direct in a comedy was handled really subtly. It was altogether momentous. I am a 50 year old man who never ever writes a review - but I have been moved to do so on this occasion as this is one of the best things I have ever seen in the West End.

An innovative and thoroughly entertaining re-working of this classic with a splendid set, wonderful live music and some really outstanding performances. Our only quibble was with the anti-climactic and rather incomprehensible ending.

It is difficult not to love this production of Love's Labours Lost. It has it all: Shakespeare's youthful love of language and character; a delightful setting in Edwardian setting and a mainly young cast revelling in this happy comedy. The roof scene alone is worth visiting at least twice! A winner!
