Funny Girl
Funny Girl
Fifty years after it first appeared on the London stage and following a record-breaking run at the Menier Chocolate Factory, legendary musical Funny Girl returns to the West End starring two-time Olivier Award and BAFTA winner Sheridan Smith as Fanny Brice, a role immortalised by Barbara Streisand on Broadway and on film.
Set against the backdrop of the outbreak of WWI and its aftermath, Funny Girl charts the extraordinary rise to fame of Broadway superstar Fanny Brice and her volatile relationship with entrepreneur and gambler Nick Arnstein.
One of the most anticipated revivals of the decade, this brand new production of Funny Girl features music and lyrics by Bob Merrill and Julie Styne (Gypsy), book by Isobel Lennart (revamped by Kinky Boots writer Harvey Fierstein) and direction by David Babani, the heartfelt and captivating Funny Girl features a host of beloved musical numbers including ‘I’m The Greatest Star’, ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’ and ‘People’.
After breaking box-office records at the Menier Chocolate Factory, where the production sold out in just ninety minutes, and playing for a strictly limited run of twelve weeks at the Savoy Theatre, there’s no time to lose in booking your tickets to the sensational Funny Girl.

Smith is hilarious, glorious, touching. She carries us through everything with a performance that is all-singing, all dancing, all-joking and, somehow, all-soul too. An unforgettable star turn.

Sheridan Smith made the show funny. Her mannerisms and facial expressions made this performance superb as did her singing of course. A wonderful performance. We had tried to see Sheridan twice before but her personal reasons prevented this but this was worth waiting for.

Just one word needed: Brilliant! We saw the understudy to Sheridan Smith but we were not disappointed. She was brilliant! She received a standing ovation. So were the rest of the cast brilliant too. Darius was perfectly cast. Go and see this show. Worth every penny.

Funny Girl was an exceptionally entertaining and moving experience for me and according to the standing ovation at the end, the audience was equally enraptured. I was so astounded by Sheridan Smith's performance that it left me truly speechless. I have never seen a show twice, but for her performance alone, I would go again.

Sheridan Smith plays the role of Fanny Brice with enthusiasm and energy. Making the role her own with her magnificent voice she deserves a standing ovation. Couldn't think of anyone better to play this role.

Sheridan Smiths interpretation of Funny Girl was hilarious! Her comic timing was brilliant! Her co-star, Darius, showed off his great voice and talents too! The absence of stage scenery and props, I felt at times left too much to the imagination but overall the cast and company gave a thoroughly entertaining performance and I really enjoyed the evening!

Excellent entertainment..everything an evening at the musical theatre should be..vibrant, energetic but.... Very poor sound reproduction masking the voices and overpowering the "orchestra"...just how many trumpets were there? A small criticism of an otherwise excellent Sheridan Smith...she worked so hard at not apeing Barbra Streisand that at times it was a little contrived. Funny faces, bum tucks, speaking lyrics rather than singing them..but I am being picky. Good supporting cast and great set. Well done to all

What a fantastic show. Sheridan Smith was amazing, her performance was fantastic all the way through the great show. Darius along with others were all great performers. We had an absolute ball. My brother & sister came to pick us up from the theatre afterwards and Sheridan had selfies with them both, she was such a down to earth young woman. I would recommend this show to anyone, who wants a good clean giggle. Amazing !!!

It's been several years since I last attended a musical so wondered what to expect. WOW I was blown away!!! Such amazing performances by the cast and beautifully staged and produced. Both Sheridan and Darius were stunning in their performance and left me singing to myself long after the show finished. Just thank you

Unfortunately the great Barbra Streisand made this her own and for number like People Sheridan Smith couldn't come within a hundred miles. Somethings just shouldn't be retried. Also No Ones Gona Rain On My Parade, she just couldnt hit it but then after B S who could. Generally the show was entertaining but a bit of a disappointment.

A sad story, mechanical and predictable in the telling. Funny at times, sad at times but somehow missing the mark overall leaving it a bit lack lustre. The orchestra was good.

We were at the front of the Grand Circle. The view could not have been better, and the cast were splendid. However, either the acoustics, or the mikes or the diction of certain actors meant that we were unable to hear much of the dialogue. It was noticeable that laughs came from the stalls, none from the Grand Circle.

I must admit I was curious if Sheridan could pull it off being a lifetime Barbra fan but WOW, she was Funny Girl Sheridan style and amazing. After all, the last time I saw Barbra, payed £180 per ticket and needed a telescope to see her! This was a new high

We had heard from friends that this is an excellent show but their views couldn't prepare us for such a superb experience. Sheridan Smith, Darius and the cast gave their all and the audience were left buzzing. A great night out and well worth the journey up from Exeter. Thank you all.

I would recomend this Musical, Miss Smith is a delight to watch, so very talented. She made the part her own which was a tall order following in the footsteps of the great Barbara Streisand. All the cast were terrific. We had a fabulous evening Thanks to all involved

Such a shame that the technical support have allowed the amplification of the orchestra and the stars to be far too loud. Someone really should come and sit in the dress circle and check it out. Some of the New York wisecracks got lost but otherwise a very enjoyable evening, with Darius Campbell providing fantastic support to Sheridan Smith's star turn.

It was OK, the group songs etc were fine, but Sheridan Smith was too raucous / shouty / ear-splitting when she sang. As an actress she has great comic timing, and is great to watch, but as a singer she is not so good. Overall we enjoyed the show, but it was not one I would want to see again

Such a talented cast, and an incredible and outstanding performance from everyone! Loved every single minute, every song, didn't want the show to finish! A well deserved standing ovation from everyone in the theatre at the end of the performance. Sheridan, you are incredible, and such a versatile and talented actress! I feel like I know you.....that's how special you make your audience feel! ......and I am completely in swoon with Mr. C! Thank you to everyone for such a great show!

Production, performers, costumes excellent BUT a) The Rat-a-tat-tat routine is OFFENSIVE. I get it that it's a neat way to suggest the changing world but habitual overplaying of US (the most aggressively colonial nation on earth, guilty of many crimes against Humanity but never brought to book) contributions to WW1 doesn't go down too well in UK. There are other routines you could have chosen, why didn't you ? b) Even from my elevated seat at the top of the House, THE AMPS ARE TOO LOUD. c) Programme writer - a) The Dying Swan was Anna Pavlova's music-hall turn when she defected, danced to "The Swan", part of "Carnival of the Animals" (Saens Sens) and nothing to do with "Swan Lake" (Tchaikovsky) b) Why didn't you explain why the Ziegfeld poster has her name as "Fannie" but in the "Funny Girl" version(s) she's "Fanny"?

This show has to compete with many other excellent shows which have more wow factors in way of chorus work and dance. But what they don't have is Sheridan Smith who has the responsibility and capability to carry the whole show. She is charismatic, talented and comes across the footlights. Well done!

Great show and brilliant vehicle for the talents of Sheridan Smith. Superb comic timing and great personality, together with an abundance of talent in song and dance make this her show. Great supporting leads from the other cast members complement her but make no mistake she is the reason you go to see Funny Girl. The choreography is slick and the great numbers are well performed by everyone. Definitely worth a visit!
