Hangmen
***Hurry! The best seats are selling fast***
Following a sell-out run at the Royal Court Theatre, Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen makes its much-anticipated transfer to the West End.
Passing the time at his pub in Oldham, Harry is enjoying the modest fame that comes with being the second-best hangman in England. However, things are about to change. Today is the day the death penalty is abolished. Among the reporters and toadies that arrive to seek out Harry’s reaction to the news skulks an unknown figure with an entirely different motive.
Hailed by critics as one of his finest works, Hangmen marks McDonagh’s (The Pillowman, The Cripple of Inishmaan) first play in a decade following the success of his films In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths. Directed by Matthew Dunster and starring original cast members David Morrissey (The Walking Dead, State of Play) and Johnny Flynn (Jerusalem, Twelfth Night), Hangmen is a tremendous melding of humour and terror which brutally lampoons the lust for celebrity.
Playing for a strictly limited run at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre, book your Hangmen tickets today.

We arrived expecting as stated a line by line hilarious play and what we got was dower, Badlwt thought out dramatics, dull stage setting , racism , swearing and anger that took the form of shouting by the lead actor... All in all a waste of our time and our money .... The people next to us left after the first half and nobody around us was laughing either .... Close the show now !!!

Brilliant. I am a long-standing admirer of the playwright, since I first saw 'The Beauty Queen of Leenane'. He is the outstanding playwright of his generation. 'Hangmen' is well up to his past achievements. Funny, ironic, and threatening, the play shows that the system of hangmen's justice goes on beyond its legal end.

I love Martin's work and was not disappointed by his latest offering. I can't give my usual 5 stars for his work because although it is very, very good, the experience was marred by a couple of things. I felt you needed to be in the stalls or circle to get the full value of the creative & first rate sets. Also to see any facial expressions which although the excellent cast tried to include everyone, the task is impossible. Basically if you have money to be able to afford £80 + seats then you are laughing.(although I still did laugh a lot!) The actors were all great even though I believe some might have been understudies. As a matinee performance I know it gives under studies a chance to shine. Sometimes they can even give better performances than the stars. I love Martin's writing and the direction again was excellent. I feel the end leaves us a bit hanging (pardon the pun) but if you can still get seats, I urge you to go.

Really funny, lively and entertaining. Fast paced with two great twists that I didn't expect. I'm so glad I managed to get tickets- lots of people couldn't as the house was packed even at 2.30 in the afternoon.

A superbly acted black comedy. Well structured plot, a dramatic set used to build tension and actors all clearly enjoying themselves driving the pace to its superb climax. An unexpected topic but don't read too much about it as it will spoil it....if you love theatre don't miss it just go!

A very gripping story. Performances by leading men in great contrast to each other kept the suspense up. Characters were formed and believed. Altogether a very fine afternoon.

The play was excellent BUT our view in the Grand Circle was spoilt by several people on the front row leaning on the balcony and REFUSING to sit back. THE THEATRE STAFF SHOULD ENSURE THAT EVERYONE SITS IN THEIR SEAT PROPERLY>

Although well staged and acted the play itself lacks direction. At times it seems to want to critique capital punishment and degenerates into sub Ealing comedy leaving this audience member disappointed. Behan's Quare Fellow was not evoked.

Great acting with impeccable timing on all the punch lines by the whole cast. Not a weak one among them! A very professional production, with simplistic but creative use of a small stage and set changes. The script was good albeit the reference to paraplegics did not add to the story line, was in bad taste and detracted from our overall enjoyment. The anti-German jibes were also a bit too strong at times.

Excellent, I have been trying to see Hangmen for some time, but the tickets were too expensive. It is very witty, fairly and amusingly un pc, and gripping. Fine acting from all, and a very good performance from johnny Flynn

Was funny and entertaining. Was a bit confused as to why the creepy guy admitted to something he didn't do and got killed as a result. Doesn't make sense after he mocked the innocent man for getting caught. The hangman should have got his comeuppance.

We're big fans of MM and this dark comedy lived up to expectations - strong cast (from newbie Bronwyn James to old hands such as David Morrissey and Andy Nyman), brilliant comedic timing and 60s set and props, big questions about morality, 'justice' and, of course, hanging.

Feb 21, 2016
A brilliantly written and acted production. Excellent minor characters as well as first class principals. It is very funny and McDonagh revels in the language given to his characters. The mix of humour and menace is reminiscent of Pinter. The actress playing Shirley is straight out of drama school and her stunning début suggests a great future as long as she doesn't become typecast. We will go to the live broadcast at the cinema next. month.

I took my 15 year old daughter to see this and we both enjoyed the production hugely! The cast was Stella and the delivery of fast paced lines and slow burn humour was exquisitely timed. Highly recommended - a great night out. Well done to the actors too - at the end, we could see you had enjoyed it as much as we had! Fabulous!

We were captured from the outset by this pacy, taut darkly comic drama. There are so many moments that fit Mooney's pondering- 'menacing or creepy? There's a difference.' We were impressed by the meaningful writing and swept in by the urgent performances. What a superb play.

Disappointing, maybe I expected too much. Light humour, but not really very funny. Good acting and good sets moving up and down. The first scene in the bar was too long

Loved the play, especially as a fellow Pierpoint. The twists, turns and laughter were a great combination. My husband didn't know what to expect, and was surprised when the audience started to laugh in the first act. Great stage play, but could also be great on the radio.

The world inhabited by the supposed last hangman in Britain is familiar to those who have seen and enjoyed the movie 'In Bruges' - another Martin McDonagh creation. I love the way the play stretches reality in just the way a master storyteller should to telling a tale that is at once funny, fascinating and macabre. Brilliant!
