What’s Mary Poppins about?
When brother and sister Jane and Michael Banks change the advertisement that their father has placed in the paper searching for a nanny, to their surprise, something truly wonderful happens. Flying into Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane on the east wind, comes magical Mary Poppins. With a cheery disposition, kind, witty, very sweet and fairly pretty, Mary Poppins is all the things these children wished for and more.
Soon, Jane and Michael are having the kinds of adventure children can only dream of, along with their magical nanny and her great friend Bert the chimney sweep. Mary Poppins transforms the children’s lives and teaches the grown-ups, too, that ‘anything can happen if you let it’.
Mary Poppins is a character based on the stories of P L Travers. The stage version is produced and co-created by Cameron Mackintosh, with a book by Julian Fellowes, with original musical and lyrics by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman and new songs by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.
Mary Poppins songs
Mary Poppins is one of Disney’s most recognisable film scores. With classic songs by the Sherman brothers, additional songs were then added for the stage musical by British song-writing royalty George Stiles and Anthony Drewe (the talented team behind Honk! and Betty Blue Eyes). The stage musical features classic Disney hits Chim Chim Cher-ee, Jolly Holiday, A Spoonful of Sugar, Feed the Birds, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Let’s Go Fly A Kite. New songs include the instantly catchy Practically Perfect, Brimstone and Treacle and Anything Can Happen (If You Let It).
Mary Poppins awards
The original London production of Mary Poppins was nominated for nine Laurence Olivier Awards, winning for Best Actress (Laura Michelle Kelly) and Best Theatre Choreographer (Matthew Bourne and Stephen Mear). The production went on to further awards successes including seven Tony Award nominations, including a win for Best Scenic Design (Bob Crowley). The 2019 West End Revival then added a further two Olivier wins for Best Theatre Choreographer and Best Set Design.
Five fantastic Facts about our favourite flying Nanny
Think you know your Poppins triva? Here are five gems which might test your knowledge:
1. Julie Andrews initially turned down the role of Mary Poppins. Eager to change her mind, song-writing brothers Richard and Robert Sherman got to work on a brand-new song written especially for her. Robert’s children had just had their polio shots on a sugar cube – and hey presto! “A spoonful of sugar” was born!
2. When Mary Poppins was adapted for the stage, one of the biggest challenges was creating the scenery. This Banks House alone weighed a staggering 18 metric tonnes!
3. It took Walt Disney more than 20 years to persuade Mary Poppins’ creator, the author P L Travers, to grant him permission to fly the world’s most famous nanny from the page onto the big screen.
4. No spoilers here – but of course it wouldn’t be Mary Poppins if she didn’t fly during the stage show. But it’s not just Mary that defies gravity… loveable Chimney Sweep Bert somehow dances upside down on the proscenium arch of the theatre!
5. Mary Poppins author, P L Travers, is reported to have disapproved of the music written for the film and hated the use of animation in the movie so much that she refused to allow Walt Disney to adapt any more of her work. Ah…what might have been!

We love the musical but be aware that it’s almost 3 hours and kids can get bored. For adults to remember the childhood it’s perfect.

We went as a family with 2 girls (6&7 years old) who sat throughout and enjoyed it greatly and so did their grandmother. For me what was less great is - it wasn't a hot day and it was too cold in the theatre. There was strong cooling air-condition so do come prepared with suitable clothes . Other thing that was less enjoyable is that it is too long. 2 hours and 50 minutes including an interval- the girls sat throughout but we all lost a bit of our focus at some points and good things do not need to overrun.

I purchased our tickets as a Christmas present for my Mum (25yo & 55yo) and we loved every second of the show! We were sat in the Dress Circle and as the theatre is quite small, the seats were still brilliant at a lower price. We came on Sunday 15th Mar, just before the chaos caught up with the UK, and I cannot recommend enough that you hold onto your tickets for a rescheduled date later in the year as this is definitely my favourite show I have seen in some time now. Costume was stunning, casting is perfect and the songs and routines will have you smiling from start to finish!

A different adaptation. Didn’t like the Old Nanny story line ! And the cook / kitchen was too slap stick like a Panto. Waited a year too see . Disappointed. We also had a technical issue so had to wait for that to be fixed . People left the theatre at the interval and before the end of second half . ☹️
