The Lehman Trilogy
The Lehman Trilogy
Following a sold-out run at the National Theatre, the NT and Neal Street Productions' critically acclaimed The Lehman Trilogy will transfer to the Piccadilly Theatre in May 2019.
Sam Mendes (Skyfall, King Lear) returned to the National Theatre to direct Ben Power's English version of Stefano Massini’s vast and poetic play, which was a hit across Europe, with Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Ben Miles playing the Lehman Brothers, their sons and their grandsons.
The story of a family and a company that changed the world, told in three parts on a single evening. On a cold September morning in 1844 a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside. Dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is joined by his two brothers and an American epic begins. 163 years later, the firm they establish – Lehman Brothers – spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, and triggers the largest financial crisis in history.
From 5 August, Dominik Tiefenthaler will play the role of Emanuel Lehman alongside Simon Russell Beale and Adam Godley.

Great stage design and good performances but we gave up after act 2. The way this play is narrated in the third person get really aggravating very quickly. We didn’t care about the Lehman’s story after a while. 100 pounds and another monotonous west end play we will never see again

It was a brilliant performance, mainly dialogue. It was funny, sad and factual. I remember the collapse clearly as I was with friends on our way to Paris on the Eurostar. One of our friends worked for Lehmans. And there it was as we opened up the newspapers...Lehmans goes into administration! I didn't know tye story pf the Lehman brothers could be so interesting even filling in 200 mins. I was seated in the very back row with slightly restricted view but soon forgot about as I was immersed into the story.

No hesitation in giving this show 5 stars. Th e play takes place in a cube. There are only 3 actors in this play and they are all superb. But special to Simon Russell Beale.

Brilliant..... highly recommended and completely lived up to the recommendation. The experience starts as an admiration of a stunning set and a curiosity as to how the story will unfold, and by the second act has one completely enfolded in the story and characters with hardly an awareness that there are only three actors in a cast of many ..... wonderful story telling!

My wife and I deliberately didn’t know what to expect from The Lehman Trilogy. Obviously we were both aware of what had happened to Lehman’s Bank. Overall we found the play very interesting and extremely well scripted. The acting from all three actors was absolutely superb. How they remembered all the lines is beyond us. They were each brilliant and every single character they played we believed them. The set was very cleverly put to use and didn’t need anything else. It is the longest play we’ve sat through, but truly the time flew by. Absolutely excellent

A very different theatre experience. Imaginatively staged and acted as it unfolds the history of the brothers from shop traders to stock market traders and collapse.

Amazing play, fantastic set design, brilliant live piano, superb writing in the poetic style and the three actors were mesmerising with their slick delivery, slick character changes and unique interpretations, three fine actors who excelled in their craft, 3.5 hrs of stunning theatre. A very fine production, best play I've seen in the west end for many years, in fact the best!

Rarely have I seen such an outpouring of appreciation from an audience at the end of a performance. This was a truly stunning 3 hours of theatre. The script is brilliantly crafted, the production & direction outstanding and the 3 performances are truly virtuoso displays of acting at its best. To see more than 150 years of history play out in front of you is pretty mind blowing! It is fantastic!!!

Unquestionably one of the finest plays I've seen in a very long time. A story finely told across three acts with two intervals. The time flew by. The actors were sublime and held the audience in their hands. The standing ovation continued through three curtain calls and after the house lights went on. Limited time left to see this, but a tragedy for those theatre lovers who don't.

The show was great so I feel bad to give it one start however our seats were behind x 4 cameras that were filming the show. So we couldn't see the stage for most of it! After part one we were moved but then - as a party of three - couldn't sit together. And then the stage was still mildly blocked. Such a shame as what we 'heard' was magnificent. The three male actors were incredible. I also emailed management re our issues and had no reply - great customer service - NOT!

It’s been some time since I saw a play with a stripped down cast taking on multi roles, and what a cast- a privilege to watch them live- so definitely top marks to Sam Mendez for that concept, and top marks for the fabulous set. Thought the final act dragged in its depiction of the unfolding chaos but spent the next morning talking about everything.

Fantastic show, beautifully staged, expertly written and brilliantly acted. The best performances you will see by three actors on any London stage. Poignant, moving, and a chilling look into the history and nature of greed.

The three main characters gave a fantastic performance, however I felt the play was far too long, and over emphasised parts, ie the Wall Street Crash which is well documented. Would have liked much more coverage of the lead up to the 2008 crash which would have engaged my daughter as it is in recent memory.

I didn't know what to expect. I know about the Rothschild and John P M stories but only a little about the L bros. Was a pretty cool story. But the performances overshadowed the story in my opinion. Although remarkable, there are greater more compelling narratives but the performances by the actors were amazing. Doing the job of what normally would warrant 10-15 people with 3 was fantastic and thoroughly enjoyable.
