The American Clock
The American Clock
Starring Sule Rimi (Sweat).
For them the clock would never strike midnight, the dance and the music could never stop...’
The American Clock turns and with it, fortunes rise and fall. In 1929 in New York City the stock market crashed and a generation’s lives were changed. Facing an unforgiving future in a once-familiar world, we follow a broken community as they summon the courage to work out how to live.
In an exciting and unconventional staging, visionary American director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, Hadestown) transforms Arthur Miller’s adventurous play into a time-travelling reflection on the formation of modern America.

Whilst the performances were very good across the board the production could probably use cutting by twenty-ish minutes in my opinion.

We loved the front of house staff, the make-do loos were REALLY GOOD and the ice cream lady was a gem. Thank you for a great evening. We will come again - from devon!

An amazing production from start to finish. Would definitely recommend. The music was brilliant, the political discourse was great and the execution was incredible.

Having no prior knowledge of this Arthur Miller play it came as a bit of a surprise that it lacked a normal plot line and would be over three hours long. However I thought that the performances were strong throughout with some effort in the production to add some light heartedness to a story about a dark time in US history.

Despite luke warm reviews in some papers I and a friend, both avid theatre goers, were delighted with the performances, direction, sets and music of this excellent show. An Arthur Miller fan of many years I am pleased this rare play has been made available and would urge anyone to go. The energy and talent of all the cast is infectious and Clark Peters gives yet another brilliant performance.

What an exceptional version of The Clock. The use of music and dance heightened the awfulness of the situations forced upon people during the Depression. The staging to was effective and enabled the story line to be 'pushed' along. Thank you.

This was an amazing show from start to finish dealing real life experiences of the Wall Street Crash and how people survived the depression from the 1930's to the 70's. Excellent performances from the cast especially Clarke Peters Clare Burt & Paul Bentall. The whole deserve a standing ovation every night

The American Clock is never going to feature in lists of Miller’s best plays, but it deserves a better London outing than this. The director’s cisikn intrudes on a simple narrative and adds 30 minutes to the show, to bo good effect.

Perhaps my mistake, but I had no clue it was going to be a musical! Can’t stomach those, especially about such a serious subject as the 30’s depression.

Interesting historically but clumsy in your face staging and falls over itself to Be politically correct

Although the 4 of us quite enjoyed the American Clock by Arthur Miller we all found it trying to get too much history in without enough character development - and too many characters played by the same - though very talented cast. Great singing and dancing but confusing ideology. It is not enough just to believe in anything as one of the characters said and seemed to reflect Miller's belief. The second part seemed to be much more on the ball with some strong marxist analysis. Not up to Miller's plays like A View from the Bridge or Fathers and Sons. Shame the Old Vic only had toilets outside on ground floor!!!
