The Inheritance Part 1
The Inheritance Part 1
The Inheritance is a two-part play and is intended to be seen sequentially. However, each part constitutes a complete theatre-going experience on its own.
Winner of 'Best Play' at the Evening Standard Awards 2018, The Inheritance is the play that has taken the West End by storm. Following a critically-acclaimed run at London’s Young Vic, Matthew Lopez’s play The Inheritance is transferring to London's Noel Coward Theatre from September 2018, for just fifteen weeks.
Directed by multi Olivier Award winner Stephen Daldry, this “monumental and transcendent” (Time Out) production questions how much we owe to those who lived and loved before us. You can read our review of The Inheritance here.
What Is The Inheritance About?
A tale that spans generations and links lives, The Inheritance asks what it’s like to be a young gay man living in New York a generation after the peak of the AIDs crisis. This “remarkably involving production” (Independent) from director Stephen Daldry explores the legacy left by previous generations and the debt we owe to the future – and to each other.
“An exquisitely truthful and funny modern classic” (Telegraph), The Inheritance is a brilliant take on E.M. Forster’s classic novel Howard’s End that sets the tale in our modern world and tells it through the eyes of a group of young, ambitious New Yorkers. By equal turns hilarious, turbulent, and profound, it’s an unmissable theatrical experience.

To be honest, I didn’t quite know what to expect from The Inheritance. But let me tell you, it’s everything you want from a play and even more. The audience was grinning, laughing and (more than once) sobbing - me included. The message of this play is so incredibly important and everyone who has the chance to see this should do so. I would give 10 stars if I could.

There aren’t words. There were tears though - many - and in the middle of the street after part 1. But there were also laughs a plenty. Beautiful writing, smartly directed, excellently delivered.

The Inheritance Part 1 was the most incredible breathtaking work of theatre. I was blown away and would love to see Part 2 but have missed the opportunity. Please stage again very soon. Pure brilliance.

I saw only part one, and then read part two. The staging is quite elegant and minimal, the seven hour play is baggy and verbose and all too often incredibly cheesy. Cultural references drop like confetti and characters spend a lot of time telling the audience the nature of other characters because the writing and the playing doesn't say it well enough. "Angels in America" is a vivid, ambitious, beautifully staged masterwork. This isn't. Mildly sorry to have missed Vanessa Redgrave.

An enthralling and engrossing play. It held my full attention throughout the three and a half hours - not a word is wasted. All the actors were magnificent, giving powerful, moving performances. A marvellous reworking of a theme from E.M. Forster's Howards End, giving it a modern interpretation which was strong and vivid. I highly recommend both plays. Brilliant.

The play was witty, funny, sad, captivating, full of love, passion, greed , compassion all carectristics of all humans. Brilliantly plaid. My favourite character was Walter/Forster. I wish there was one seat for me available tonight on the second part ! Sadly this play is so popular that seats are all sold out ! I am hoping for an extension!

The staging of this production is based on simplicity but nevertheless it packs a punch. It is an emotional rollercoaster at times very funny with moments of sadness and poignancy. The best thing I have seen in a long time and unfortunately can’t get a ticket for Part 2.

This was one of the most amazing pieces of theatre I have seen for a long time. The cast were fantastic actors, the play made me feel the emotions of the characters. The play offers a mix of laugher and fun, but also seriousness based on very important issues. It gets the message across in a fabulous way, which isn’t too dark, but light also. The writing is amazing. Worth every bit of 5 stars.

Incredible performances, beautifully staged and written. Pure poetry. A brilliant ensemble. Must see. If you can only make one, make it Part 1 but the story is incomplete without Part 2.

Lots of these reviews said this show was great so I went thinking it’ll be great but too long. It was by far the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life not just play but including film, tv and theatre! If you don’t go see this show, you have missed out on the very best london and human beings have to offer- the story is amazing, actors are amazing and music is amazing! A rollercoaster of laughter and emotions you will never want to get off! F

Disappointment doesn't describe my feelings. Self-aware and smug certainly. Overly pleased with itself definitely. Disjointed, with a snobbish, shallow and frankly boring love drama filled with unrealistic and utterly unsympathetic "contemporary" characters (using Howard's end as a inspiration really does not work), along side a frankly exploitative and totally underdeveloped side story of the aids epidemic.

What a moving, powerful and seamless piece of work. It's quite an achievement to keep an audience totally engaged over such a long period of time. The script sparkles and performances are authentic and brilliant. I'm sending everyone I know!

Maybe we were just too tired but I wasn’t wowed by this as I expected to be. We found it very slow. The dialogue wasn’t earthshatteringly good (again maybe you had to be more patient ...ie 7hours worth of patience!).

Last night I left the theatre speechless and today am still processing what I witnessed over 7 hours on stage on a rainy Wednesday in London. Not just on stage, but we as an audience, our responses felt like a privilege of the kind that is truly rare. I can't put into words. Go see. Theatre does not get better than this. Beyond brilliant.

Had me spellbound for the whole three hours and twenty minutes - without scenery and very few props! The stage world was created by imaginative staging, engaging performances and beautiful story-telling. Would have liked to have seen part two the same day but couldn’t spare the time. Going back next week though.

What an amazing performance. I felt like I was reading the most gritty and intense book, whilst my imagination danced around the story in my mind. I was truly mesmerised by the stunning acting and intensity of the writing. Whilst the content brought me to tears, the play was an absolute joy to watch. I can’t wait for part 2 on Tuesday!

I was “concerned” about the length of the play but within 5 minutes I was gripped and completely forgot about how long I’d be seated. The excellent start allowed the audience to “wonder” what direction the play would take which meant that we were engaged immediately. A stellar cast worked excellently with each other. The direction was second to none. The simplistic staging offered so much to the imagination. If I was able to watch it again, I would. Made our trip as we are visiting from New Zealand.

Often compared with Angels in America. This is much more touching and immersive. The Walter character brings depth to the story. And you actually care about the different players. Highly recommended.
