The Lieutenant of Inishmore
The Lieutenant of Inishmore
MCG Artistic Director Michael Grandage directs stage and screen actor Aidan Turner in The Lieutenant of Inishmore, Martin McDonagh’s critically acclaimed, brilliant satire on terrorism.
Mad Padraic may be a terrorist deemed too violent to be a member of the IRA, but he has one weakness: he loves his cat more than anything in the world. When he returns from bombing and torturing in Northern Ireland to find that his cat has been run over on the island of Inishmore, Mad Padraic will be seeking some answers to the fate of Wee Thomas.
Best known for playing the title role in BBC’s hit series Poldark, Aidan Turner plays mad Padraic in this hilarious, acute observation of violence in contemporary culture. The production comes on the heels of Michael Grandage’s award-winning production of another McDonagh play, The Cripple of Inishman, in 2013.

This is comedy at its blackest... McDonagh's real gift is for pushing a situation to its most brutal extreme, and being funny with it.

Put it this way - when the 35-year-old heartthrob (Aidan Turner) makes his entrance, there's an explosion of applause.
The Independent

A savagely funny satirical farce on the terrorist mentality. Turner does it proud with a performance that shows a masterful command of its Synge-meets-Tarantino tone.

Great play - well acted - some “Irish” accents took a while to adjust to, but overall most enjoyable. Shame about the 15% agency fee!

How I loved this play. I flew all the way from Australia to see it and I wasn’t disappointed. Performances were spot on and deadly funny. I could never have imagined so much blood and violence would provoke such hilarity. Thanks for a wonderful evening.

Just seen this excellent play for the second time. So different to anything I've ever seen before. Laughed and gasped all the way through. Great to see my friend's reactions this time when I knew what was coming. Great cast and really hope you make a DVD of the production for all those overseas fans who weren't able to as it live.

What a wonderful evening's entertainment; humour at its darkest, but extremely funny. Brilliant acting, people and animal. Thank-you for the pain in my stomach muscles from all that laughing and my hands from all that spontaneous clapping. Denise

The more in Inishmore summed up what one would wish to see from Michael MacDonagh. A brilliantly funny play brilliantly played by all the cast with Aiden Turner showing his talent. The standing ovation at the end was the proof and Macdonagh’s A very very Dark Matter will undoubtedly be his next success

Great show, so much funnier than I expected and acting was fabulous. Not sure I should really find 4peopke and 2 cats being murdered sooooo funny but the whole thing is done so well. Well done to everyone for such a great production

The evening at the Noel Coward Theatre was amazing..the play was so funny yet had moments which allowed one to reflect on the troubles . The cast was great especially the elderly farther ....however i must say Aidan Turner stood out exuding such charisma and stage presence. The play was that much more enjoyable for me as i managed to sneak in a sleek silver hip flask ...full of medicinal spirit! The scenery was simple but effective ...special effects ..very effective. Prices for the show were not cheap but well worth every penny as the memories will last for years to come. Bravo..

This was a most hilarious night; the acting of all the actors was superb with such wonderful comic timing. The play at times tested your ability to laugh at the vey black subject matter. The actors however delivered those lines in such a way that you had no option but to laugh and belly laugh at that .The scene at the end of the play has to be seen to be believed .

This was a jewel of a show. The cast were spot on and it lives up to its reputation as the funniest, violent, blood soaked, anti-violence statement in the West End. I would certainly see this again.

Brilliant. A must see. Hilarious and yet thought provoking. You end up laughing at things that are quite alarming and this makes you realise how futile some actions are. A wonderful evenings entertainment. Highly recommended

I encouraged my friends to come up from Hampshire with me to see The Lieutenant of Inishmore for two reasons. I have enjoyed watching Aidan Turner in many productions from Desperate Romantics to Poldark and was interested to see him in a very different role. We all felt that he was excellent with superb comic timing. I also liked the humour of Martin McDonagh in Three Billboards. This play really made us laugh. We loved it.

Wasn't sure what to expect as with such a big star as lead role but I have to say I was fully entertained with this black comedy. I found myself laughing at 'stuff' I would not normally find funny. The casting was perfect. All characters were strongly acted with no weak links. A most enjoyable evening.

Really enjoyable with some great acting and effects. Don't expect this to be PC - the lady beside me was horrified and kept exclaiming loudly that people should not be laughing... worth going to see!

I've been to see this three times now! It just gets better each time. So funny, in a dark way! Not for the squeamish, narrow minded or children! I'm hoping to go a forth time before the season ends. Fantastic cast.

I enjoyed the play, and was able to laugh, even though from the beginning its a bit difficult for a cat lover, beware if you are squeamish. The story line was funny though, and you could tell the cast were having a great time doing it, elements of Father Ted and craggy island, but I loved that.

If the sight of Aiden Turner in a blood-stained vest doesn't get your heart racing you must be already dead. Rather like his cat. Lots of laughs and fantastic character performances,, totally un-PC and hilarious. I'd go see this every night if I could. Don't miss it!

Entertaining, funny and topical. Super cast with both Charlie Murphy and Aidan Turner. Was worried I wouldn’t be able to see past his character of Poldark but this was not at all the case. Super performance, full of energy. Long haired ginger man stole the show. A MUST see before it ends next month.

Now then, we went (a) because we knew the show was brilliant from the reviews and friends' recommendation and (b) because Young Mr Turner was in it!!! We were not disappointed at all. I bet most of the audience went just for him and had a shock or two! The production was superb, the set was staggering (how DO they wash it down between shows?) The casting was perfect and the moggy at the end was entrancing. It was a timely and inspired revival of a brilliantly dark comedy and the always terrific Mr Grandage deserve a knighthood for his courage in bringing it back. It deserves ten stars.

Dark, funny and shocking at times. Some scenes quite difficult to watch especially if you are a cat lover like me. I didn't expect there would be so much blood - don't go if you are squeamish! Aidan Turner is great and there is a good twist at the end.

Excellent play. Thought provoking and hilarious. McDonagh once again creating violent drama that incorporates comedy. The play does not seek to make light of the troubles but reflects the pointless, nonsensical madness of it all. All actors were excellent each bringing their own dynamic. Play gives a great opportunity to see such talented actors up close. The stage was classic west of Ireland setting. Great way to celebrate our 25th Anniversary whie celebrating in London. A twist as part of our honeymoon was on the Arran Islands. The play will also offer a twist. Go see it, hilarious.
