A Midsummer Night's Dream
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Counter-tenor Christopher Ainslie and soprano Soraya Mafi star in Robert Carsen’s production of Britten’s comic opera based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Returning to ENO, this staging highlights the blurred relationships between reality and dreams, the natural and supernatural, and sexual desire, in a production rampant with mistaken identities, confused lovers, and alarming transformations.
A quartet of rising stars takes on the roles of the lovers, including Eleanor Dennis as Helena, Clare Presland as Hermia, David Webb as Lysander, and Matthew Durkan as Demetrius.
Making his ENO debut is young British conductor Alexander Soddy, conducting a score that showcases Britten’s ear for beguiling orchestration and melodic invention.

This is the first time we have seen this opera and we were absolutely enthralled by the performances and the music.

Expectations were high for a Robert Carsen production of one of Britten's loveliest works, with an exciting young cast. The singers and orchestra excelled, creating a dreamy and lyrical sound world for this highly enjoyable opera and offering Shakespeare's text with (largely) clear and audible articulation. I felt very let down by the bland production however. The "Dream", like Shakespeare's original, has some dark and sinister undertones, that make for a more wholistic and dramatic work. These were ignored in favour of a superficial staging, marred by too much slapstick from Puck, a dull and inappropriate set and rather bizarre costumes for the Athenians. As a result, I found it boring.

I was very tired so did give up after the interval. I would have liked Puck to have been a boy or young man. Not enough contrasst with Bottom & Co. I was in the Upper Circle and felt I would have enjoyed it much more if I had been in the stalls. It is perhaps a piece (which I hadn't seen or heard before) better seen in a more intimate theatre. I liked the use of the beds though. I wouldn't have given up however if I hadn't been exhausted. I think it was Britten's fault rather than the singers' or the production.

Most enjoyable production, colourful and impressive. Singing well up to standard especially that of Oberon where very note and syllable perfectly clear.
