A Midsummer Night's Dream

Counter-tenor Christopher Ainslie and soprano Soraya Mafi star in Robert Carsen’s production of Britten’s comic opera based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Returning to ENO, this staging highlights the blurred relationships between reality and dreams, the natural and supernatural, and sexual desire, in a production rampant with mistaken identities, confused lovers, and alarming transformations.

A quartet of rising stars takes on the roles of the lovers, including Eleanor Dennis as Helena, Clare Presland as Hermia, David Webb as Lysander, and Matthew Durkan as Demetrius.
Making his ENO debut is young British conductor Alexander Soddy, conducting a score that showcases Britten’s ear for beguiling orchestration and melodic invention.
