Guys and Dolls
Guys and Dolls
There’s a new doll in town! Hollywood star Rebel Wilson makes her West End Debut in the all American classic as the long-suffering Miss Adelaide. Wilson is best known for her role as “Fat Amy” in the multi award winning films Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2. She will take on this iconic role from the 28 of June for a limited 8 week run until 21 August.
Based on the Broadway stories of Damon Runyon, this popular favourite is a brassy story of gangsters, gamblers and nightclub performers.
Nathan Detroit is in trouble. He desperately needs money and his fiancée, nightclub singer Miss Adelaide, is growing weary of their 14-year engagement. Just in time, infamous gambler Sky Masterson and buttoned-down missionary Sarah Brown enter the scene. Sky has never turned down a bet in his life and he’s about to accept another one: get Sarah to agree to a date. No problem! Anything for a few sinners for the mission.
Directed by New York native Gordon Greenberg and boasting sparkling choreography by Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta and Andrew Wright, this energetic and exhilarating new production of Guys and Dolls is brimming over with style, wit and heart. Featuring show-stoppers such as ‘Take Back Your Mink’ and ‘Luck be a Lady’, Guys and Dolls will enchant young and old.

Fab night full of laughing. Oli as Sky melted our hearts and Rebel and Simon (Adelaide and Nathan) had us in stitches. Stellar cast, choreography and set. The only thing we should say is Adelaide seems to have spent time in both New York and Australia and has a bit of a mixed accent.

Thursday 28th July 2016 Matinee. First half of the performance lacked energy. Actors were not properly warmed up and gave lazy performances. It is a huge creative mistake not to delete the 1st appearance of Adelaide. If you employ a celebrity you don't introduce her to the audience in a short irrelevant scene when she is surrounded by other characters. Also vulgar mistake was to allow her breasts to be groped by the other actor in the scene. It is inconsistent with the manners of the period of the play. If it was an an afterthought suggested by Rebel Wilson it should have been vetoed by the Director. The 2nd half was a revelation. It built up to a wonderful crescendo culminating in an unforgettable Mission sinners meeting scene. General comments- Rebel Wilson is woefully miscast as Adelaide. The Director should have worked with her in finding her true character rather than rely on her self conscious "I am a rotund comedian'. We particularly liked the actor playing the part of Sky Masterson. It was encouraging to see young children and teenagers in the audience.

Fabulous show, Rebel Wilson was born to play Miss Adelaide, she owned the stage. The cast was brilliant and very entertaining. Loved the chemistry between Miss Adelaide and Nathan, my favourite song was 'Sue Me' oddly romantic with the yelling and pleading.
