What's It About?

Ian McKellen - 'one of the world's greatest actors' (Times) - plays Falstaff in a new version of Shakespeare’s Henry IV, adapted by the award-winning writer and director Robert Icke.

A divided country, leadership crumbling, corruption in the air.

Welcome to England.

Hal wasn't born to be king. Only now, it seems, he will be. His father longs for him to leave behind his friends in the taverns of Eastcheap, most notably the infamous John Falstaff. War is on the horizon. But will Hal ever come good?

Bringing together Shakespeare's two great history plays (Henry IV, parts 1 and 2) into the theatrical event of the season, PLAYER KINGS will reign over London’s West End for twelve weeks only – playing at the Noël Coward Theatre from April 2024.

I found the first half rather confusing as everyone seemed to be wearing uniforms and, as we were in the back row of the stalls it was difficult to differentiate between the sides. Second half clearer and Ian McKellen given more space. The staging was excellent as were the acoustics. Colour blind casting doesn't work when the king is white and the sons are??? It makes understanding Shakespearean text confusing.

Ian McKellen was obviously and unequivocally awesome. No surprise. But the young Hal. What a glorious actor. Superb chemistry between them. Exciting and dynamic use of set. And sound. Scene changing so ingenious. 3.5 hours. Held us fully the whole time.

As per be my title. I have watched this play many times and love it. This rendition was superb. The cast making what can be a long play a joy to see and hilarious. Ian McKellen playing Falstaff was always going to be a good to watch. To a non RSC a great beginning
