The Hills of California
The Hills of California
This house. It’s called “Sea View”. It’s just I’ve looked out of every window, and you can’t. You can’t see the sea. Blackpool, 1976. The driest summer in 200 years. The beaches are packed. The hotels are heaving. In the sweltering backstreets, far from the choc ices and donkey rides, the Webb Sisters are returning to their mother’s run-down guest house, as she lies dying upstairs.
Following their multi-award-winning triumph The Ferryman, Jez Butterworth, writer of Jerusalem, resumes his partnership with Sam Mendes, director of The Lehman Trilogy, to bring you The Hills of California.
Laura Donnelly (The Ferryman, The Nevers, Outlander), Leanne Best (Sweat, Ripper Street, Line of Duty), Ophelia Lovibond (Minx, W1A, The Effect) and Helena Wilson (Vogue World, Jack Absolute Flies Again, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern) lead the cast as the Webb family in Jez Butterworth’s new play, The Hills of California.
They are joined by Bryan Dick, Shaun Dooley, Corey Johnson, Richard Lumsden, Natasha Magigi, Nancy Allsop, Sophia Ally, Alfie Jackson, Lara McDonnell, Lucy Moran and Nicola Turner.
The Hills of California is now playing at the Harold Pinter Theatre for a strictly limited run.

I didn't know what this play was about. Went on a very busy Wednesday evening. The story was so good and poignant and the message was honest. It sends a very clear message to the wannabe singers, actors and entertainers. Life is not always Broadways and Musical. Set in the darkest corner of Blackpool you reside at the Seaview Hotel (Motel)? It starts and ends. Must see show for all ages.

Superficially the Hills of California is about the lives of 4 daughters and their ambitious show-biz mother who wants to put all of her daughters on the stage and make them famous. However, this play has hidden depths which veer from tragedy to comedy and which keeps you gripped to the very end of this 3 hour production. The acting is superb, especially by the actresses who play the daughters and mother and the writing sublime so you forget that you are watching a play and become immersed in what could be a typical family rift with all the anguish that results. A mesmerizing play not to be missed.

I loved this performance. There were highs, there were lows, the drama was light, the drama was intense. There was humour there was singing, dancing yes - but the story about hope and family and choices and frailty kept me riveted. I hoped for a happy reunion ending but we don’t live happily ever after do we? We just remain interesting and lovely human beings.

At times magical, often compelling, this is a absorbing production. The play itself is a sharply observed take on the volatility of family life, the pluses and minuses of aspiration, and aspects of British life in an earlier time. But it needed to brought to life by a sympathetic director and a talented cast - an extraordinary performance from the 'mother', while both the 'adult' sisters and their younger selves were wonderfully differentiated. With its darker themes the whole effect is heart-rending - yet also heart-warming. The final song will remain with me for a long time.

Original, gripping and moving story. Laura Donnelly is outstanding and the rest of the cast also great. I keeping thinking about the play long after.
