The Enfield Haunting

The Hodgson’s had no idea what a poltergeist was when, in the summer of 1977, furniture and toys started moving of their own accord. An ordinary, working-class family, who lived in a north London council house became the centre of one of the most famous poltergeist events in the world. This is the story of one night in the spring of 1978 when events were approaching a climax.

Based on the first-hand accounts of one of the ghost hunters, THE ENFIELD HAUNTING is the true story of what happened when a dedicated single mother, tries to protect her three children from something that is incomprehensible, deeply disturbing and is hurtling to a terrifying conclusion.

Catherine Tate (Dr Who, Queen of Oz) and David Threlfall (Funny Woman, Shameless) star in the world premiere of this major new play by Paul Unwin (co-creator of the world’s longest running medical drama Casualty).

Having lived in north London since the 70’s I was aware of the Green Street poltergeist activity that became attracted massive media interest. Many theories abounded at the time and most of them attributed this psychic disturbance to family and social problems, i.e. a single parent being harassed by a violent ex, children with difficult behaviour and neighbourhood conflicts. This play depicts these features very well. The acting and casting is terrific and the set is very convincing. However, there didn’t seem to be much of a story and the ominous bumps, blackouts and flying objects soon lost their shock factor so that I wasn’t anywhere near as frightened as I’d expect to be. I’m still not quite sure what to make of it all - but maybe that’s the point!

75 Minutes of great acting, jumps, scares and footprints of disturbance in your soul that will stick with you for a while. A chilling distraction from the humdrum daily life. Well done and thank you!
