The Crown Jewels
The Crown Jewels
The Crown Jewels is the “hysterical” (The Spectator) new comedy based on the most unbelievable royal caper in British history. Charismatic and unpredictable Colonel Blood, along with a trio of misfits, is planning the greatest heist of all time: stealing the Crown Jewels in plain sight. But reigning monarch Charles II can’t afford a royal scandal, and no King likes people handling their Crown Jewels…
With an exceptionally star-studded cast including the “King of Comedy” (Sunday Times) Al Murray and Mel Giedroyc “at her comedy peak” (The Independent), this “outrageous” (The Stage) production leaves “the audience howling with laughter” (Daily Express).
Also starring Joe Thomas, Neil Morrissey, Carrie Hope Fletcher, Aidan McArdle, Adonis Siddique and Tanvi Virmani, written by BAFTA award-winning creator of The Durrells and Men Behaving Badly, Simon Nye, and directed by multi-Olivier Award winner Sean Foley (Upstart Crow, The Ladykillers), it would be criminal to miss this raucous royal affair.

Great show and very funny Shame the seats at the Garrick Theatre were so uncomfortable causing the majority of the audience to fidget in their seats which detracted from the show

It should have been our type of comedy, similar to Upstart Crow... but it was a bit of a disappointment. I found the comedy very weak with only a few well crafted elements. With a strong cast , Al Murray was especially good in the pantoesque interaction with the audience, producing the shows best joke featuring Milton Keynes. From our seats at the back of the stalls we struggled to hear some of the punch lines clearly. Was there a problem with the microphones? The highlight was Carrie Hope Fletcher's strong narration and singing random songs. I feel this talented cast was let down by a weak script.

Excellent semi-historical comedy play full of sharp wit and humour. All the characters excelled. Al Murray's easy style in front of the audience and engaging the audience as members of his court was terrific. The actor playing Elizabeth was a gem! Mel's facial expressions and timing was impeccable!

The actors tried hard but the script did not hold our attention. We left at half-time.

This was an excellent show. Very funny. All the cast were brilliant characters. In particular, Mel was really good in both roles and Al Murray really showed true comedy genius as the king, especially with what was essentially ad-libbing with the audience.

Lots of double entendre and pantomime humour which involves interacting with audience. Very Al Murray and carrie fletcher voice fantastic with Mel clearly enjoying herself laughing at the jokes herself. Very good silly night out which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I’m afraid I left in the interval so my review is purely based on the first act. I thought that there was still much work to be done to make this a great show. Although, having said that, the highlights for me were those moments when I think Al Murray went off script and engaged with the audience. .

Al Murray and his wonderful cast have scored a hit with this royal romp. Watch out for the emptying of the royal chamber pot if you are sitting in the first couple of rows!
