Accidental Death of an Anarchist
Accidental Death of an Anarchist
An Anarchist has fallen to his death from a police station window. But did he jump or was he thrown?
As the police prepare for an inquiry into the incident, an unhinged showman known only as the Maniac is arrested and brought into the station. Seizing the opportunity to put on a show, he leads the police in an absurd recreation of their version of events, exposing the cover-ups, corruption and profound idiocy of an institution in free-fall.
A razor-sharp satire, Tom Basden’s wickedly hilarious adaptation relocates Dario Fo’s classic farce to contemporary London and features a show-stopping performance from Daniel Rigby, as the Maniac.

The show was absolutely hilarious and clever, with witty writing and expertly-timed humor that had the entire audience in stitches. One of the highlights of the performance was the outstanding acting from the entire cast, but particularly the main character, who stole the show with their charisma and talent. The actors really brought the script to life, and their chemistry on stage was a joy to watch. What I loved most about the play was how it felt so perfectly tailored to our time and city. The humor and references were spot-on, and it felt like the show was created specifically for our community. The set and costumes were also well-designed and added to the overall experience. Overall, I had a fantastic time watching this play. It was a brilliant, clever, and super fun experience that left me feeling energized and entertained. I would highly recommend this show to anyone looking for a good laugh and a memorable night out at the theatre.

A great play but the updating was not always effective and some of the dialogue was not clear enough

Preferred the original without the changes for the 21st century but still very good

Aged 15, I first saw this production in 1981 on a school trip. I remembered it being exceptionally funny as a comment on corrupt Italian policing and saw it a second time at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1987. Fast forward to 2023, as soon as I saw it advertised on the tube I snapped up 5 tickets, so that my family (kids aged 16,19,22) could enjoy it as much as I had. The contemporisation of the script has not reduced the farcical comedy, but the references to British policing have made it a more poignant, darker and therefore a disturbing production that has significant relevance to our own society. A must see in the few days this run has left.

A very enjoyable and topical play. The only minor criticism, perhaps because of very quick delivery, age + cheap seats, some to the jokes couldn't be heard.
