Macbeth
One couple's ruthless quest for power turns nature upside down in Shakespeare’s epic tragedy of Macbeth at the Globe Theatre this summer.
When the universe gives Macbeth a sign that he will become King, he and his wife won't let anyone stop them. Leaving a trail of destruction in their wake, the bodies pile up as the couple cling to power and control.
Following 2022’s ‘mesmerising’ ★★★★★ (WhatsOnStage) The Merchant of Venice in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Director Abigail Graham debuts in the Globe Theatre.

My daughter wanted to see the show as she’s studying it for GCSE and I thought it would be a good opportunity to visit the Globe. We had a great time - fabulous to see the play in this setting although a helicopter going over wouldn’t have been something the original actors had to contend with. The show was great and changed my view of Shakespeare which I’d always found hard going before. My daughter absolutely loved it as she’s really into the dramatic arts

Such a good performance brought right up to date. Blood, gore & Spiderman. Loved the making if the brew with a blender.

I thought the scenery and costumes were underwhelming. Similarly the swapping of the witches for the three men was confusing and with no real purpose. It is fine to do something different really well but I had never seen the production before and couldn't see what the changes brought to it. References to cockapoos and other attempts to draw in the audience were mostly just hard work. The witch who came on at the beginning promised much but it declined after that.

It was my first trip to the Shakespeare Globe and I was enthralled by the theatre. Wonderful performances by all the actors for a modern take on the play Max Bennett as the title character. Alas, what a shame that the understudies for Lady Macbeth and Macduff had not learnt their lines! I think that if some people are paying over £70 for a seat, the company must make sure that the cast are ready for all eventualities.

Awful!! Poor costumes - no idea who is who, guessing all night! Odd people on stage as if walked off the street? Who is the pregnant lady? Who is the odd health and safty chap? Why dressed as police men! Disaster! Even more confusing to fathom! When meant as an aid memoirs to support GCSE students all came away even more confused! Poor advertisement for standing, made it believe you were buying an actual standing spot! Not a free for all. Mosh pit

Sadly, this was the most dreadful excuse for Shakespeare's Macbeth . I brought my 15 year olds for the first time since Covid to the Globe and my son said "This is butchery ,it's ruined the play for me. " The gender roles pointlessly being switched, screeching and confusing ,irrelevant scenery additions and sloppy, poor acting in particular for Macbeth and his wife .Sadly a huge waste of money and time and I would like a refund

So many compelling ideas and interpretation. Loved the sinister humour of the witches. Simply not enough clarity to begin with as to who was who, especially not helped by seemingly indifferent costume. Liked Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, but was especially moved by Malcolm.

I really enjoyed the performance. Sunshine made the experience even more enjoyable. Very professional and interesting improvisations where needed. A super day out. 👍

Great performance and brilliant experience! The Globe is a fantastic venue and the performance really brings the play to life and makes the language relatable to those who might be studying it. A few modern twists that don’t detract from the original play itself. Kept my teenage son interested the whole way through.

Loved it. I was not expecting this modern interpretation. Great acting by all the actors and especially the children, and the stage setting was minimalistic, but fitted perfectly with this version of the play.

Took my teenage children to Macbeth and was such a great experience. We felt immersed in the whole experience. Actors amazing. Volunteers so helpful, staging, interpretation everything was exceptional.

This production only held my interest because of its weirdness. There were some interesting ideas and some delightful symbolism. BUT the overall presentation of the major characters was weak/strange. There was much shouting, Macbeth’s internal monologues were shouted at the audience which robbed them of their essential darkness - the audience laughed as in places where we did not know whether they were meant to be funny.. I don’t mind Duncan being a woman but the actress captured nothing of the “noble” Duncan thus robbing his murder of much of its impact. Overall, the production denied the deep psychological darkness of the play.

So brilliant to see a modern understanding of Shakespeare. Loved the unheroic delivery. The ambiguous presentation of the 3 weird sisters was thought provoking. Thank you for everyone involved

I loved the interpretation and, having studied Macbeth at school many years ago, I really enjoyed the playfulness of casting men as witches and a blender as a cauldron. A couple of Macbeth's soliliquies felt a little weak, but his overall performance was very powerful. Lady Macbeth was very strong. The children were so professional. Everyone gave their all. It seemed to pass so quickly and I really enjoyed it.

I saw this with my GCSE student son, he had seen another production recently but thoroughly enjoyed this one. It takes a lot to engage a 15 year old in Shakespeare but this production did just that. I enjoyed it hugely too. Would highly recommend standing in the yard for full immersion.

Took my 2 teenage boys to watch this production in preparation for their GCSE next year. A stunning experience both in terms of the amazing performance but also the incredible surroundings. We loved the spirit of the performance with the audience interactions. We also have to praise how well cared for we were when my son had been ill earlier in the day. An all round positive experience and we will definitely return again.

Have been a fan of Macbeth for many years and was not disappointed with this performance at all. Just the right blend of new versus traditional. First time at the globe - fantastic setting

I don’t know how many productions of Macbeth I have seen, from studying it for O Levels in the 70s, then A Levels, then at university. Now, I tutor GCSE students and Macbeth is the subject area I enjoy most. Out of all the productions I have seen, this was the most enjoyable. I took my musician son with me and he loved it so much that he has booked to see it again with his girlfriend. A poignant interpretation, complex, unsettling, full of humanity. Thank you.

The globe theatre is so beautiful and in the standing section you get to be involved in the play as the actors walk through the crowd and stand on props dotted amongst us. The actors were fantastic. There was humour, the witches acted by males, and customs modern. A different yet passionately acted play. Loved it.

Took my reluctant 14-year-old son with me to see Macbeth. He really enjoyed it and loved the fact that the actors came through the crowd at times. Both of us liked the modern take on the three witches. We also thought Macbeth and Lady Macbeth played their roles very well. I also like Banquo and the child actors in the play. On the way out, we could hear lots of people saying how good it was. We also loved our standing positions in the crowd.

I did not mind at all that the witches were played by men and Duncan by a woman. However, the actors did not speak their lines clearly enough. There were also gratuitous aspects of the production which did not bring out aspects of the play, but seemed artificially attached to it. Above all, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were not up to their roles
