George Takei's Allegiance
George Takei's Allegiance
George Takei, the original and beloved Mr Sulu from Star Trek, film and television star, activist and social media icon makes his London stage debut at Charing Cross Theatre.
Inspired by the life story of renowned actor and activist George Takei, the UK premiere of the uplifting Broadway Musical, Allegiance, follows the story of the Kimura family and their struggles in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
In a world ravaged by the effects of war, Allegiance reveals the courage and loyalty of family in a time of great injustice as 120,000 Japanese Americans are forced into internment camps, testing the power and resilience of the human spirit.
Sam Kimura (Telly Leung) believes enlisting is the way to demonstrate his patriotism and win the freedom of his people. His sister Kei (Aynrand Ferrer) sides against him and joins the resistance movement in the camp. Soon the political conflict is mirrored within the Kimura family, leading brother and sister down starkly different paths as they decide where their allegiance lies.
Created by Lorenzo Thione and Jay Kuo with a book by Marc Acito, George Takei's Allegiance held its world premiere at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in 2012, setting box-office records. After a triumphant run on Broadway and a subsequent film seen around the world, Allegiance transfers to London for its European premiere in a newly conceived production directed and choreographed by Tara Overfield Wilkinson, playing at Charing Cross Theatre from 7 January - 8 April 2023.

You expect great songs and strong performances from any West End musical. This adds a powerful, hugely relevant story, beautifully told in a perfect intimate setting. Moving from start to finish. I hope they record it for posterity and broadcasting to those who can't get to see it.

Not usually a great fan of musicals I primarily came for the story (and George Takei) and I must say, I was far from disappointed. I enjoyed both music and acting greatly and found the story to be gripping and expertly told. I could not have wished for a better experience.

This was the best musical I’ve seen in a long time. It’s up there with Les Miserables in terms of the poignant story line, musical score and quality of the acting and singing. No one could be disappointed in this production.

The story of Japanese Americans during the Second World War is similar to the treatment of Native Americans after Europeans “discovered” the Americas. We always find ways to create separation. Fortunately, the human heart always “wins” as is demonstrated over and over again. The cast of ALLEGIANCE brought the conflicts to life for all to see in a moving account of how each individual copes with the circumstances of exile. Forgiveness is the key to finding peace and connection. An important message to share in these troubled times.
