Carmen
Carmen
Fierce love can’t be tamed.
Carmen: a woman ablaze with passion, surrounded by men possessed by obsession and jealousy. One of opera’s most well-known characters sets herself on a road to tragedy when she meets Don José, a corporal in the army searching for love.
ENO favourite Jamie Manton returns to direct Calixto Bieito’s beloved production, exploring the complex relationships between the sexes at the tail-end of Franco’s regime in the 1970s, with Bizet’s searing score, featuring popular opera songs like March of the Toreadors and Habanera, conducted by Kerem Hasan, returning from 2022’s production of Cosí fan tutte.
Ginger Costa-Jackson plays the title role alongside Sean Panikkar, who returns to the role of Don José from the ENO’s 2020 production. Also returning to the ENO are audience favourites Nmon Ford (Escamillo), Sophie Bevan (Micaela) and Keel Watson (Zuniga).
The cast is rounded out by ENO Harewood Artists Benson Wilson, Alexandra Oomens and Innocent Masuku.

Classic opera in modern settings. I really enjoy this however I still want to see traditional version. The story is timeless so it's definitely worth to watch. Unfortunately a cloakroom wasn't available at this time.

This must have been the most human Carmen I’ve ever seen. The raw emotion was so compelling. The choruses were bigger than I’ve experienced & had children taking part which was a bonus. The acting was terrific as well as the singing. It was Carmen herself who stood out head & shoulders above the whole cast. She was utterly realistic, a great mover as well as having a rich & flexible voice.

This was my first time seeing opera. I enjoyed it more than expected, and my mother (who i took for her birthday) absolutely loved it as her first time. The first half was a bit longer than expected.

This was my first opera and it didn’t disappoint. It was great to see that it was modernised to attract a younger audience. The casting was great, as was the venue.

We had a great time, our first Opera, ENO and performers fantastic. The venue is fantastic, first time there and a totally different venue to most West End Theatre's. Thank you for a great evening

This was my first time to an opera, and I was totally impressed by everything, right from the stunning theatre, quality of the production, the voices, the orchestra. Rather, embarrassingly, I wanted to applaud in places where no one else did, maybe you could put a marker in the program for opera virgins like myself. I will definitely be back.

What a horrible, vulgar performance and production! No costumes, no stage decorations, all performance just dark and boring. Spanish temperament is lost, no dances, just pure boredom. I would not recommend to see this at all!! What a disappointment.

Not sure about the modernisation of the opera. I didn't feel it needed a phone box and someone taking selfies. It definitely wasn't what I was expecting.
