I, Joan
I, Joan
Acry for courage erupts in the Globe Theatre this Summer with the premiere of Joan, a powerful new play uncovering the unlikely hero behind the legend.
The men are all fighting, again. An endless war. From nowhere comes an unexpected leader. Young, poor, female and about to spark a revolution. This is Joan.
Join us in the wooden ‘O’ and feel the heat of the sun, the drench of the rain, and the pulse of Joan’s passion. With open hearts and raised voices, we invite you to dance and cheer with us as we rediscover Joan’s story.
Written by Charlie Josephine (Bitch Boxer) and directed by Ilinca Radulian (Co-Director, Richard III, Globe).

Great show very relevant Great performances especially the actor playing Joan. I understand from the program that it was their professional debut!

This wonderful, imaginative production was the epitome of what good, political, change-making theatre can be. It was accessible, entertaining, thoughtful and though-provoking, skilfully written, beautifully cast and flawlessly performed. Congratulations to The Globe for programming work like this. We so need diverse voices in this tumultuous world and for those voices to reach beyond their own cultivated audiences.

I came to see this play without any prior knowledge of its’ trans/non binary context. There were things I really liked about the production - the physicality and raw energy were hugely appealing. What I found difficult was the lack of subtext in the writing. Every character reveals exactly what they’re thinking, and articulates their beliefs with utter candour. The result is, I guess, a different kind of production - perhaps more akin to a medieval mystery play or revival meeting. Joan walking amongst the groundlings and stating the trans/non binary/queer position was hugely effective but scary, as the audience roared their assent with one voice. It felt a tad intimidating and totalitarian.

I thoroughly enjoyed this performance. It was original, absorbing and uplifting. All of it just worked. There was a standing ovation at the end.

Very repetitive and a bit amateur. Was very excited for non binary and queer rep but it was very shallow and preachy.

Power and passion, contempt and challenge, laughter and love, all wrapped up in a cry for understanding and call to action. Superb.

Yeah, not quite sure what I was watching with this one. The actors worked very hard .. but not too sure what they achieved. It was like four different shows jammed together that didn’t really have a linear point. The costumes were .. bizarre and didn’t really make much sense- it was like someone raided the costumes cupboard and then ran out of budget (examples being the weird bedsheets that had just been spray painted with the English flag) which is just disappointing. Because I’ve seen some wonderful costumes produced by The Globe, it just seemed such a shame that this was so naff. As someone who is non-binary, I was very disappointed with this show. I really wanted it to be something that could help educate and inspire about the trans community. I was utterly disappointed. It could’ve been so much more. That said, the weirdest bit of the show is when a member of the audience had collapsed on the floor and instead of calling for a show stop, something that is somewhat industry standard, the show continued which just seemed odd? It was distracting for both the audience and cast (who did handle it well, and continued. So, props to them!), and could’ve been quite serious… just don’t think it was handled as well as it could have been. To quote the show, this was ‘disappointing shit’ and ‘what was going on?’

As a Transwoman I was told to go alone as my makeup would not survive the night. This was good advice. I suspect if your heteronormative and cis you may still find this play outstanding. But if you are queer it’s a must see. They (lead and cast) are amazing and the writing and premise overwhelming. 10 stars out of 5.

This production of I Joan was a truly thought provoking take on the tragedy in which it takes a very unique perspective of the character.

Great to see anything at The Globe, but this was special. A strong cast, story told with a lot of innovation. Definitely worth going to see.

I loved this play. I believed in the history of it the whole time. And yet it was a story for today. And I thought the performances were magical. A thoroughly wonderful afternoon at the theatre. Thank you.

I, Joan is just an amazing show. Filled with humor, and set so far back in the past, yet emphasizes so many points that are vital in the world today. All of the performers are exceptionally good, the costumes are wonderful and the fact that so much was accomplished with such a simple set is a testament to the quality of writing, production and everyone involved. I highly recommend the show. And since this was my first visit to the Globe, let me also say what a great experience that is. Can't wait to go back.

I really wanted to like this. Joan of Arc is such a positive historical character in so many different ways. The light moments had me laughing but the play just seems didn’t ‘gel’ for me. Even my 17 year old, who is totally accepting of any gender and non gender people, said that he felt disappointed that Joan of Arc had been kidnapped as an historical ‘non-binary’ soap box. Strangely he also left with the idea that the play had given the message that men are supposed to be totally useless and that strong women had been bashed too. I just didn’t get it.

I loved this play. It is an honest telling of a story that grips you. There was no set or gimmick, nothing got in the way of this heart to heart experience. Thank you.

Joan of Arc is one of my favourite historical figures- very fascinating and intriguing in the different ways they have been interpreted- but I have never seen such a solid and powerful presentation of Joan as non-binary. The play is simultaneously very fun and very powerful- it takes great time to show the trans experience as not just one fraught with concerns and expectations but also one of joy and euphoria. The writing is both sharp and fun, and relatable and honest when it needs to be. It also feels both very historical and modern- yes, it’s telling us of a medieval non-binary person, but the theming and message is obviously current- i think that with easy-to-afford standing seats this is a Joan of Arc that speaks to todays queer youth. It’s immensely inspiring! They also actually feel like a working class hero, something I think has been lost in other adaptions of Joan. In a lot of Joan of Arc’s visual depictions, they are depicted with a halo, or glowing ring around their head- here it’s also present, but the glow comes from their smile- scenes showing their enthusiasm, and their growing certainty in their gender, and love of themselves. That smile! The expression transcends most describable feelings of joy in my experience. It won’t leave me. Ever. (I apologise for the long review but the show has left me with many thoughts. Thank you to everyone involved for such an incredible show.)

A beautifully seeringly honest and powerful piece of writing, rightly given an outing at a major venue. The production and staging does not match the truth of the writing, it is gimmicky and badly staged and lacks skill and experience: the movement is terrible, abstract and repetitive, choreography for dancers not movement for actors and the point of view of the actors in the movement sequences lack motivation and consistency. Some people looked at the audience and smiled as if they were in a musical, some people had embarassed expressions and no one had any reason to move or any relationships with each other. On the night I saw it the music was out of time or else if its meant to be a -rythmic this does not add to the drama and takes away from the emotional impact of the writing: the musicians destracted from the drama by laughing at the jokes, which made them look amateur and the set meant that there were only a few options to enter- which quickly lost surprise. the actors were great and the central performance beautiful- but they were working against the concepts of the creative team. They also didn't reach the house vocally and there was a lack of clarity about the style- some were doing TV acting and some Shakespearean acting. The Director clearly hadn't done their job in finding the play's world or register. But see it for the writing and the message.

Really appreciated the acting and speeches, quality of acting and originality in the adaption in general. The musical scenes were less good in my opinion, but this is my personal taste.

Great performances. So clever how wove trans rights with the Joan of arc story. Some excellent scenes and choreography…. Maybe a tiny bit too long winded at certain points but this (minor point) didn’t distract from it being an overall great show. I would recommend…

Loved it! Classic story brought up to date with fabulous characters, choreography and humour. A very empowering performance for people who have always felt like freaks! I felt proud to be who I am and to belong to such a rich and diverse community.

From the opening monologue which is a confused pseudo political contradictory and twisted attempt at justification to the nauseating end watching I Joan was a painful experience. I’ve never seen so many walk outs, I counted 7 in the first 1/2 hour. The audience reception ranged from delirious rapture( from those with Blue hair, piercing and really shite T-shirts) to incredulous disbelief and praying for the end( never have so many wanted to see and been relieved at Joan ablaze ) If you have Blue hair and a personality disorder you’ll probably love it , if not, give it a miss .
