Life of Pi
Life of Pi
Winner of 5 Olivier Awards, including 'Best New Play', Life of Pi is based on one of the most extraordinary and best-loved works of fiction – the smash hit adaptation of an epic journey of endurance and hope.
After a cargo ship sinks in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, there are five survivors stranded on a lifeboat - a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, a Royal Bengal tiger, and a sixteen year-old boy named Pi. Time is against them, nature is harsh, who will survive?
Long after the curtain falls, “Life of Pi will make you believe in the power of theatre” (The Times).

Unlike the others in my party, I’d not seen the movie, and had given up several times for n reading the book. I had no idea what to expect, and with a lifetime of prejudice against magic realism and anything hinting at the supernatural, I wasn’t really looking forward to the show that much. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The restructuring of the narrative, interspersing chunks of interview with the accident investigator, seemed to me a great improvement on the structure of the original book. The puppetry was amazing and believable and utterly charming. There wasn’t any aspect that was anything less than excellent, and the Pi character was perhaps the finest acting I’ve experienced. At the end, I shared his tears.

I booked this show as realised it finishes next week so was keen to see it. Really well acted and the animal puppetry was incredible. Magical experience.

Not great TBH. Performances were a little wooden. Expected a lot better given the reviews. Just my opinion. The cost of theatre productions in general is astronomical. Never value for money.

After struggling with traffic because of train strike and although we had booked parking was transferred to another parking lot, we eventually got to Theatre only to be told the 2.30 performance had been cancelled. Had we been advised earlier we would of had a leisurely lunch and made other arrangements. Technology is able to ask you to request interval drinks but not to advise you off cancelled shows.

Because there was a rail strike, I drove into the West End. I had a pre-booked parking space with Q-Park at Newport Place, but I just couldn’t find it! By 3.10pm I had to give up & drive home! Such a shame, as I loved Yann Martel’s book, & was looking forward to seeing the play. Who knows - I might yet get to return before it closes on January 25th 2023.

This was a last minute booking and so glad we bought the tickets. I have never seen a show that had such an impact on me and I’ve seen a lot! Every cast member was outstanding but the guy who played Pi was mesmerising he was so talented. The set was spectacular very cleverly thought out. The puppetry was out of this world I really sobbed at the end of the show I couldn’t believe what I’d seen. I would have gone straight back in (with tissues) and watched it again

I love the movie and that's why I want to watch the show. It doesn't let me down though I thought it was a musical. The stage effects were superb and the story was told in appropriate pace. I really love the ocean effects and animals' scene, especially the first time Richard Parker appeared in the zoo, showing its energy as a ferocious predator, and the last scene before the interval which ended with a powerful roar. The actors all did very well and the show was incredible.

Beautiful and breath taking performance. Puppeteers were fantastic and you really felt you were watching a live animal! Stage sets were so clever too with a boat appearing almost out of nowhere. Actor that played Pi was captivating.

I had read the book and was unsure how this would be portrayed on stage. All I can say is it certainly didn’t disappoint! The special effects were so realistic & so clever how the animals manoeuvred. Their movements & habits had been closely monitored before the making of the play. A definite recommendation from me 😊

We loved the book and the movie …but this stage play does not match. Puppeteers were distracting and too many of them. Surely only 2 needed for Richard Walker? Apart from Pi the acting was mediocre. Overall disappointing.

The lead actor got into my soul. I believed in Pi totally. His take on the two versions of his journey, food for thought. Puppetry was amazing as expected from butterflies and fish, to the tiger. Turtle needs a special mention.
