Jesus Christ Superstar
Lyrics by Tim Rice | Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber | Starring Matt Cardle
The multi award-winning production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar is back.
Originally written as a rock opera album, Jesus Christ Superstar made its explosive debut on the Broadway stage in 1971. The show transferred to the West End the following year where it ran for eight years and went on to become one of the most enduring musicals of its time.
Following two sell-out seasons at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre – where it won the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, and Evening Standard Award for Best Musical - this "gorgeous, thrilling, heavenly musical" (Guardian) comes to the Barbican for just 60 performances from 4 July 2019.

Completely blown away from the opening solo note to the dramatic silence at the end before the rupture of applause! Amazing vocals worthy of a soundtrack. Just fantastic!

Fantastic show! I think it's important to remind people where safety exits are in case of any emergencies on the night and people should be discouraged about the use of mobile phones & the taking of persistent selfies announcements should be made in auditorium at the beginning of the show that all mobile phones should be switched off to allow people to get the most out of the performance and really enjoy the night without any invasions/distractions!

What a fantastic show - gripping, uplifting, moving - all in the space of 2 hrs. The cast are unbelievable and the voices of the main characters left us in awe. First visit to the theatre at the Barbican and highly impressed with the comfortable seats and brilliant view. Couldn’t have asked for a better night out.

Never having seen Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's famous musical, despite being born in the early 60s, I was looking forward to this production setting that right and it certainly didn't disappoint. With a cast that never stopped moving from start to finish, the energy was breathtaking. Ricardo Afonso shone as Judas with an incredible voice that more than filled the auditorium, and Robert Tripolino's anguished solo as Jesus betrayed in the Garden of Gethsemane drew gasps from the audience. I particularly loved Samuel Buttery's uber glamorous and scathing Herod. Matt Cardle also gave an unsurprisingly excellent performance as Pilate trying to save Jesus from his fate. And Sallay Garnett's voice as Mary Magdelene reminded me at times of the deep dulcet tones of Cleo Laine. The crucifixion scene was both haunting and movingly staged. Bravo!

Fantastic! Saw the original in 1973 and loved it. This has updated it but not lost anything from the original. Judas was amazing, as was Caiaphas, fantastic voices. Great performances from everyone. Would thoroughly recommend.

From the moment the overture started and the breathtaking set was revealed we were transfixed. The entrance of the followers was powerful and by then the awesome electric guitars and synthesiser had kicked in, thanks to an incredible and seemingly flawless orchestra. We knew then that this was likely to be a perfect blend of a contemporary update whilst retaining the traditional elements that I always prefer to see in JCS. The choreography is also worthy of praise. With a delightful nod to Pans People the dancing told the story and conveyed wonderfully the emotions of the followers. Judas has an incredible voice and complemented his exquisite portrayal of a complex character. Jesus had that vulnerability which occasionally created a lower level of presence. The role of Pilate was a perfect vehicle for the uber-talented Matt Cardle to showcase his incredible range, and he saved the real power of his voice for the most dramatic and explosive lines. The crucifixion scene was tremendously well done and the whole audience rose to their feet quite rightly at the end. I cannot recommend this show highly enough, whether it’s the first, or first of many times that you have seen JCS. We’re still buzzing the following day!

I really enjoyed seeing Jesus Christ Superstar for the second time. I had much better seats which was in the upper circle on B50 and so I could see the whole stage at the centre. The singing was phenomenal as their voices were so rich, and very excellent in every way. Also, the costumes were quite low key, but it made sense since it was depicting the time that Jesus was on the earth.

The talent in this show is astounding! All were very good, particularly Judas, Jesus and the red-haired Mary. I loved the harmonies in the song with Mary and Simon(Peter). Loved the sexy rock-Roman Pilate and the overtly camp Herod. The second half of the show was moving and highly emotional, finishing with me in a blubbering mess and even my stone-hearted husband shed some tears! Jesus Christ is truly a Superstar and this is the show to prove it!

Everyone from the ensemble to the lead characters were brilliant I liked the rock n roll theme twist to the show with the guitars on stage , microphone stands as weapons and staffs and speaker stand converted to a crucifix as well . The big numbers were hair standing on the back of the neck stuff . Awesome!

Some seriously powerful voices which resonated around the theatre putting the hairs on the back of your neck up. All in all fantastic show.

Strong performance from the cast but most especially the characters of Judas and Pilote. Gethsemone was the highlight for the character of Jesus. Very strong and convincing. We felt on the whole however that role was not acted too well and lacked emotion and conviction at times. The role of Mary was our biggest disappointment. A lovely voice but we felt the direction should have allowed us to understand more about her character at the start. That would help us understand the depth of her relationship with Jesus. Overall we loved it as usual but felt it was a little too much like a pop and rock set and lacking in fluidity of a musical story.

One of my all time favourite musicals. This production was brilliant and I couldn't pick a favourite moment or star. I particularly loved the physical element of performance. My only disappointment was Judas suicide scene so subtle in ways missed by some members of my party who were knew to the musical.

I am a 'seasoned' theatre-goer and I first saw a production of this show when I was a teenager in the 1970s. This production at the Barbican was recommended to me and, slightly sceptically, I went along. Three weeks later, I went back again and was just as thrilled, enthralled and amazed at this high-energy, totally-enthralling production as I was the first time. The whole company gave everything from the first note until the last and the ovation at the end - both times that I saw it - was richly deserved. Would love a cast recording of this production if that could be authorised and I am sure I would not be the only one. This is what theatre is all about - 2 hours of sheer brilliance and commitment from performers, musicians and, of course, the technical crew. I'm only sorry I don't have the opportunity to see it again on this run...but it may be back?

This production of Jesus Christ Superstar is simply excellent. It is modern and edgy whilst keeping its original magic. The cast were truly amazing, particularly Judas, Jesus and Pilot. The use of lighting and glitter (you gotta see it to appreciate it) and staging was clever and highly effective. I was brought up on the original film and enjoyed this production just as much. The standing ovation at the end was very well deserved.

Went to see the show with my mum and sister, I have seen it 3 times over 40years in different theatres. This was a modern version and I was sceptical, BUT WOW what a show..... The voices of the people performing was phoninial, the whole audience was on their feet at the end. It took my breath away.......

If you’re thinking of booking this production then do it NOW. I was spellbound from start to finish and would happily have stayed and watch the evening performance too. We had great seats in the stalls it was the first time I’d visited the Barbican and the venue perfect. Definitely recommend

I saw original Australian production in Melbourne 1972 which was groundbreaking! This new production has taken it to a new contemporary level with superb choreography and singing and band. Congratulations Seamus

I thought the production was excellent. Ricardo Afonso (Judas) was outstanding. Robert Tripolino (Jesus) and Matt Cardle (Pilate) were also amazing. Just slightly disappointed in Sallay Garnett (Mary) just felt she needed more emotion in her voice. Well worth seeing.

High energy performance with strong male lead performances (to say the least). Disappointing female lead vocals in comparison. That was a pity. Great set, costumes and effects. Music was extrodinary. All-in-all a terrific and memorable production that hit all the right buttons; thought-provocing, poking at emotions, vibrant performances by a talented cast. Well done and not to be missed if you have not seen JCSS in a while or ever.

The show was magical. Full of glitter and bling and yet it still followed the sad story of the prophets demise and rise into glory. It follows the original songs and storyline and all the actors had fantastic voices. I would see this show again and again.

An excellent production of non-stop singing, dancing and instrumentals. Amazing performances from everyone but especially Judas with his wonderful vocals. Something was happening in all areas of the stage. Very moving in parts, in particular when Mary knelt and prayed during the 38 lashes. Worth every penny !
