All About Eve
All About Eve
“Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.”
Margo Channing. Legend. True star of the theatre. The spotlight is hers, always has been. But now there’s Eve. Her biggest fan. Young, beautiful Eve. The golden girl, the girl next door. But you know all about Eve…don’t you…?
Ivo van Hove directs Gillian Anderson and Lily James in his new adaptation of All About Eve, a razor-sharp, unsettling exposé of the eternal obsession at the heart of show-business. BAFTA Award-winner Monica Dolan will join the cast in the role of Karen, alongside Julian Ovenden as Bill, Sheila Reid as Birdie and Rhashan Stone as Lloyd. Further casting to be announced.
Lifting the curtain on a world of jealousy and ambition, this new production, from one of the world’s most innovative theatre directors, asks why our fascination with celebrity, youth and identity never seems to get old.
Ivo van Hove’s direction will be accompanied by set and lighting design from Jan Versweyveld, costume design by An D’Huys and music from double Mercury Prize-winner PJ Harvey, alongside Tom Gibbons’ sound design. Casting is by Julia Horan CDG.

Although there were contemporary touches, this did not veer from the Mankiewicz script and was all the better for it. A balanced ensemble production which delivered and was not just a star vehicle. Loved it.

Liked the use of video to show us behind the scenes. Gillian Anderson fabulous as always with incredible costumes. But overall the storyline has been done so many times.

I thought this was excellent. Pacy dialogue, fine central performances from Gillian Anderson and Lily James and even better perfomances from the supporting cast, all held together by excellent direction and staging. It would have been 5 stars but for the ever-present drone of incidental(?) music, which was unnecessary and intrusive.

I was mildly concerned when I found out that the play was 2 hours long and without an interval. West End theatres and long legs don't always work out and it's hard to enjoy any show if you're uncomfortable. The Noel Coward Theatre is a luxurious venue. Plenty of leg space and comfortable seats. First test passed with flying colours. The play itself is a classic and well worth seeing. I'll not disclose any more (spoilers) but you'll enjoy it. And the cast are of the highest calibre. And perfect for their roles. Of course the two leading ladies are the stars but everyone else had great parts too. My only regret is forgetting to pick up a programme for the show as a souvenir.

We picked this play because we liked the stars and they did not disappoint. Excellent acting by all. We liked the use of audio visual affects and felt that they added to the story. Highly recommend for an enjoyable 2 hours.

Quality production. Quality cast especially the two leads and the ‘best friend’. Minor niggles. The kitchen and bathroom seemed remarkably similar (same tiles it seemed) and not in keeping with the era or the ‘plush’ main room. Insanely ripped bod of the best friend’s husband distracting/too modern, and their relationship as a couple seemed thin.. I didn’t know they were married until it was clearly stated. Nor was it clear that he’d fallen for Eve. Masterclass in bad drunk performance from Gillian Anderson. Overall great evening’s entertainment. Best Simon

I managed to get tickets last minute as they opened up some new dates. This has been a favourite film of mine for years. I was anxious to see if they did it justice. Gillian Anderson was superb and so was the rest of the cast. I was pleasantly surprised to see Sheila Reid in the role of Birdie. Very much enjoyed it.

We were quite disappointed with Lily James, she is not a good actress, sorry..... and her singing is quite bad! The dialogue was very slow and we were not impress with Gillian Anderson. Her voice is very good trying to imitate Bette Davies, but we thought she overacts with the drinking and looking drunk....not good! The rest of the cast was very good! Specially Monica Dolan and Stanley Townsend. The coreografie was clever.

This production was amazing. The cast were all wonderful. Gillian Anderson and Lily James were breathtaking; although the show was possibly stolen by Monica Dolan. Can’t recommend this show highly enough.

The acting was superb, as was the staging. The use of cameras was very innovating. Ivo Van Hove's adaptation of Joseph L. Mankiewicz script, is still as witty and relevant as it ever was. All in all a joy to watch

Having seen the movie many times, I came to the play with an open mind. After a slow start, the play picked up pace towards the middle and peaked during the final act. The use of multi media was an element that allowed some insight that would be missed if left to the performers on stage. Sometimes distracting, but a very powerful tool. Hard not to compare to the iconic performances of the movie leaving classic lines with little impact. The actress playing Karen was tops. Addison was mis cast and the Karen/Lloyd pairing seemed odd due to lack of chemistry. Gillian Anderson did a fine job as Margot Channing. Lilly James peaked in her final scenes. The sets were confusing. We’re you in a dressing room? A bedroom? Could have been more creative. Rating B

I was a little disappointed given the quality of the cast . Gillian Anderson just isn’t mean enough. Her lines are funny but somehow she just isn’t dangerous enough. The technical staging is excellent . Worth £93 a ticket ? I am afraid i don’t think so .

The show was very slow to start, and it didn't really pick up the pace. Most of the show was at the very front of the stage or "behind the scenes" so you end up watching a good portion of the show on a tv screen. Unless you have stall seats I would not see this show, as you won't be able to see anything.

I treated my husband to watch All About Eve last night. I was a bit worried because I had heard negative reviews about it. I should not have worried. It was fantastic!! We had good seats at the back of the Stalls. The theatre had provided side monitors so that we could view anything that was not clear higher up on the video screen on the main stage All the cast were extremely fine actors and we enjoyed the play immensely. We were particularly impressed with Gillian Anderson's and Lily James' performances. It was a fantastic night out. Thank you to all involved.

I haven't walked out of a theatre peformance in thirty years but I did so last night. There is nothing to recommend in this production which was lacklustre, monotonous and utterly without light, shade, mood or tension. There is always a gamble when booking shows in advance but this has left me feeling very jaded about the West End experience.

Given everyone knows the story, that's not going to be a surprise. However, the acting was very flat and somewhat lacking in energy. One didn't feel engaged with what was going on on the stage and the film element became a distraction. What a shame!

The acting was great and the use of the screens to add a level of understanding to the story really helps. The whole cast and the stage hands were brilliant as you may have guessed I loved it

Having seen the film with Bette Davis, Anderson had a lot to live up to. Not as good as Bette but both actresses were very good. Clever staging with the close ups and the party antics. Could sat have been a bit shorter but good idea not to have an interval.
