What’s Come From Away about?
Winner of 4 Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, Come From Away has taken the West End by storm. Playing to standing ovations at every performance, Come From Away continues sold-out, record-breaking engagements on Broadway, in Canada and Australia, as well as here in London’s beautiful Phoenix Theatre.
Come From Away is an uplifting, heart breaking, but ultimately joyful celebration of the human spirit. It’s the real-life story of 7,000 air passengers who were stranded in Gander, a tiny Newfoundland town, when North American airspace was shut down in the wake of 9/11. The people of Gander rallied as this tiny community came to the aid of these ‘come from aways’, putting their own lives on hold to welcome the world’s strangers into their homes and hearts.
From adversity, friendships grew and as music soared and cultural barriers were torn down, bonds were formed which would last a lifetime. Come From Away is a celebration of hope, humanity and unity.
Awarded the Tony® Award for Best Direction of a Musical, Christopher Ashley’s production takes audiences on a journey through a colourful and spirited cast of characters, brought to life by Tony® and Grammy® nominated writing team Irene Sankoff and David Hein.

Since then, this big-hearted show has gone on to be nominated for 7 Tony Awards (winning for Best Direction of a Musical), nine Drama Desk Awards (winning in three categories including Outstanding Musical) and nine Olivier Awards, winning Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Musical. The US Cast Recording was also nominated in the 2018 Grammy Awards for Best Musical Theater Album.
Come From Away trivia
No plot spoilers – just five fun facts about the show:
1. Come From Away is based on the actual events that happened on September 11th 2001, when North American air space was closed down and planes crossing the Atlantic had to be diverted to Gander, Newfoundland.
2. The show’s characters all share their names with real-life passengers from the planes which landed in Gander on 9/11.
3. The pilot of the 36th plane, Captain Bass, was later promoted as American Airlines’ first ever female captain. She loves Come From Away so much, she’s seen it over 100 times.
4. The trees used on stage are real. Some of the trees in on Broadway get so much artificial light that they continue to grow.
5. The first sound you hear in the show’s opening song, ‘Welcome to the Rock’ is an Irish drum called a Bodhrán, paying tribute to the early settlers to Newfoundland.

The cast and musicians were all incredible! What an amazing show. Thank you all
I great show The cast were amazing definitely worth going to see Theatre very clean Staff polite and helpful
A very enjoyable evening, good seats in the dress circle, very reasonably priced, fast moving performance, great music.
I’ve seen the show before and this evening’s performance wasn’t quite as impressive and moving as the last time I saw the show. The cast seemed a bit flat and as a result it didn’t move me anywhere near as much!
I was blown away by both the story and the actors.
I've seen this show 4 times now, and this was the best.
The show was fantastic. So uplifting. The actors were excellent. Would recommend this play.
This production is amazing. Tears and laughter, acting superb, great storytelling. Band are great. A real feel good show. Staff at the theatre are amaxing, very helpful and friendly. Excellent facilities for disabled. All together a perfect show and venue
The cast and band were excellent with buckets of energy, telling a life affirming story. You are taken on an journey of individual and group emotions and logistics!! I think that the audience’s standing ovation was not only for the show but also to celebrate the reality of true success out of adversity If you want an ‘feel good’ night out see this.
A wonderful heart warming story brilliantly played by this amazing ensemble cast backed by a small but so talented band. A fabulously simple but effective setting. The cast slickly move between playing a myriad of roles with a change of hat or jacket. The story is emotive and moving. You'll be on your feet at the end of the show clapping in time to the music.
Unique in its story in which all actors play equal parts, this musical is a perfect and touching tribute to all those directly affected by 9/11. So well written that not once are you confused as to whether the actor is playing a local or a traveller. The music is woven sublimely with the choreographing to deliver a musical that unapologetically grabs your attention from start to finish. So, so glad that we took a friends recommendation to see it - it was all she promised and more.
Absolutely fantastic!!!!
Great stories, very clever cast ...well thought out and an excellent, very entertaining show
Fantastic fast moving show which deals with a difficult situation in a sympathetic and humorous manner. Should be seen by the whole nation. Fabulous cast. Congratulations to all involved.
It was just absolutely great. We so enjoyed it. Not a weak cast member.
When I booked this, was not sure what to expect ,but WOW there was no way I could have imagined such high energy brilliant performances from every actor on the stage ,and even when it was over the great show given by the band like being at an Irish Ceilidh was the perfect unexpected finish. Thank you for dealing with such a sad subject in a very respectful way. I am also sure that more than one person in the audience passed a tear or two in the appropriate places.
Fantastic musical! Well worth a watch!
Come from Away was funny, moving and heartwarming and incredibly well performed. It was a great reminder how small acts of kindness and not being judgmental can help bad situations more tolerable. I walked out of there an even prouder Canadian than when I walked in.
If you only see one musical this year...go and see ‘Come from Away’. Just unbelievable! Such a talented cast! Wonderfully uplifting piece of theatre! Would happily watch again tonight!
Such a wonderful show - funny, sad, compassionate and very uplifting totally restoring faith in the kindness of people. Music was amazing and infectious
Lots of emotions from tears of sadness to tears of laughter and everything in between. Great show.
Absolutely brilliant show.
What an incredible show. A roller coaster of emotion and fun driven by amazing music and lyrics. Makes me want to visit Gander eh!! A must see thanks to all the cast and crew .
We all remember 9/11. This showed that we can all arise above adversity. Uplifting and funny as well. Everyone should go
What a wonderfully uploading play! Fantastic
Excellent music, funny, moving. Actors worked extremely hard and were very clever in how they told the story
This is a brilliant show. The enormous energy and versatility of the cast is impressive all backed up by a great group of musicians.
Fast moving brilliantly performed. Story told with a mixture of sensitivity and humour leading one into an insight into a differet aspect of 9/11
I have never been to see a theatre where no one coughed, shuffled or crackled. We were so engrossed in the story. Still and attentive throughout. There are no stand out stars, all 16 cast members and the band were just great as an ensemble. There was a reflexive standing ovation when we were there yesterday, and I understand this happens each performance. Absolutely quirky, but makes your heart lift.
Such an amazing show. Incredible storyline and total talent. Would highly recommend
A 5horoughly enjoyable production. The cast were impressive and delivered a spectacularperformance.
Amazing show, I was crying all the way through, would definitely recommend
I wasn’t looking forward to this as I was sceptical how the subject could be handled as a musical, but the issues surrounding 9/11 were sensitively represented with honesty and care. The actors & musicians were outstanding. It’s very emotional so bring tissues!
Such a great show, my face hurt from smiling, would highly recommend
Superb production, loved the music and the story. Really high quality performances and singing.
A wonderful emotional musical , definitely one not too miss.
An excellent show, superb cast and musicians. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and would recommend.
Was unsure what this musical would be like. Pleasantly surprised, excellent singing, choreography and music. Enjoyed it very much.
It was fabulous. Highly recommend.
Loved the show!
Second viewing of this for my daughters, early 20’s and myself . Absolutely loved it again .
Excellent entertaining production
Simply amazing how 12 actors and a few band members can tell the story of so many people, and remember every single line. Impressive how the director was able to get something like this together so quickly.
Great
This show was such an emotional rollercoaster but absolutely amazing, it definitely deserved the watching ovation!!
I have a tendency to fall asleep in every musical and this was not the case with Come from Away. It was amazing! The story was beautiful and the whole set up and how the history unravels was genius! Would highly recommend it.
A fantastic play which was put together very well with great music. It had a real feelgood factor to it. The pace was fast and it was good there was no interval. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Great show with slick changeovers, convincing acting and wonderful singing.
Wonderful show. I'll be recommending it to others as a must see.
What an incredible show. Great staging and production. The telling of this true event is so spellbinding and I certainly was not aware that any of this had happened. The set was complete genius so simple but effective. I defy anyone not to enjoy this show!
