Don Quixote
Don Quixote
Following its sell-out run at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2016 to mark the 400th anniversary of Cervantes’ death, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s ‘joyous’ (Guardian) production of this legendary comic novel is told by a company of 20 actors accompanied by a band of live musicians.
Adapted for the stage by James Fenton (The Orphan of Zhao, 2012) and directed by Angus Jackson (Oppenheimer, 2014 / ROME MMXVII, 2017) this ‘boisterous romp’ (The Times) arrives at the Garrick Theatre for a strictly limited 14-week season from 27 October.

I really enjoyed the show and would love to repeat it. The only thing which I am sad about is that I didn't get a booklet from the play because it was sold out.

A most enjoyable evening - the humour and the audience participation greatly appreciated. The two main characters excellent as were the supporting cast.

A fun production where the audience does not just spectate. Lots of humour, great acting by all the cast and good singing although tunes not that memorable. Clever puppetry. Prop changes amusing. It was a bit like a pantomime, very enjoyable.

Didn’t know what to expect when we went. Turned out to be hilarious. Absolutely loved it. Had us laughing and crying at the the end. All the actors were well suited to their respective roles. A great night’s entertainment.

It was both funny and heart warming. A bit slow for the first half.

Loved this. Wasn’t sure what to expect having discussed the book in my English degree class but the adaptation made it easy to follow and very funny! Only reason it’s not got 5 stars is I was expecting David Threlfall to be playing Don and he wasn’t, but no mention of the fact before or during.

A hilarious all round good entertaining show. Wonderful acting, clever use of minimal staging, moving music and song with the ability to take you to old Spain . I would see it again. I will read the book!!

We went as a family to see this at my 81 year old mother's request (she'd read a great review on it). She absolutely loved the show, we thought it was great, fun and entertaining, not what we were expecting at all! Would recommend.

Even our teenage daughters really enjoyed the show. A very entertaining stage adaptation, funny at times. A great way of being introduced to Cervantes' masterpiece.

Strong touches of pantomime which did not appeal to my taste but interesting staging. I liked the use of puppets, and horse and donkey were good fun Very well acted by the two leading characters.. Music very pleasant but not memorable

Bun fights with the audience. Stand up routines asking the first row what they do for a living. Main character lines not clearly heard. Some people seemed to like it. Should have been promoted as a panto.

Great lively lavish production with some very funny moments, especially in the first half. Slightly too long in the second half but overall a great play.

Wonderful theatre, with very friendly efficient staff! We didn’t find the show as funny as the reviews quoted, so was disappointed. Also it was difficult to hear at times. We were sitting S row in the stalls, and there was a rumbling noise (trains?) overhead at regular stages.

Last night I took my daughter and teenage grandson to see Don Quixote it was the most enjoyable evening with even a stroppy teenage boy gripped and enjoying the entire play. The acting the set every single person on stage were quite wonderful with the two lead actors absolutely exceptional - see it if you can it is a night you will never forget and will enrich your life.

Don Quixote is a joyful comedy with moments of wistfulness. The skilful puppetry was a delight and some audience participation involved the throwing of (soft) bread rolls. Great show!

Probably the best play I have been to. The interaction between actors and audience is brilliant. I took my teenage children as well as my mother who is Russian- all had such a fantastic time and a burst of energy. Well done to the whole production. Well played!!!

Struggled to imagine how Don Quixote would work on a modern day stage but they did a truly incredible job. The production managed to be extremely funny and current whilst maintaining the true Don Quixote and Sancho Panza spirt of Cervantes’ masterpiece. The interactivity at the beginning loosened up the audience and was hilarious, Sancho was brilliant! All characters were great. One of my favourite shows after really not knowing what to expect!

Where to start? This is the most fun we've had in the theatre...ever! This show is perfect for the whole family. My children enjoyed the actors addressing the audience. Rufus Hound is wonderful. So funny. David Threlfall makes for a dignified Don Quixote. He is precisely what I always imagined he would be like in the book. My only beef is Rocinante the horse was a white female horse. That can be forgiven, as the actors of Rocinante and Dapple the donkey were on of the highlight of the show. It is a pity the run ends soon. We can't recommend this wonderful show highly.enough! Bravo and Olé!

I was quite disappointed with Don Quixote. It didn't seem to know whether it was a musical, a play with music or a pantomime! I had expected much more of it, given the reviews. It seemed quite amateurish for a West End show. However, I thought the staging, costumes and lighting were good.

I horoughly enjoyed the play, very lively, emotional and well delivered. All actors performed in beautiful harmony and I truly felt madness, sadness, happiness.. you name it! Very powerful acting i did come back to the teathre and i need more! The only tiny down point is the trumpet sound! Id expect some flutes or piercing medieval mandolines but not a trumpet it felt more of a mexican touch and not from castille or manchego. Anyway luckily it harmoniously married well with the joyful songs!!! Highly recommend it and id say it would be enjoyable by public of any age, its beautifully performed and represents wonderfully the life of don quixote.

The experience started at the front door. I was frisked and aggressively told that I had to hand over my sausage roll and crisps to the powers that be. They were ticketed and banished to a cupboard of coats for 3 hours. God knows the temperature must have affected the taste and quality of the product by the time it was consumed. The play - I can’t figure it if it was more or less disappointing than eating a lukewarm sausage roll in the rain on Charing Cross road. As I took my first sad little bite I was pushed away into the rain by the same man who took the sausage roll in the first place. Clearly he had a chip on his shoulder. Perhaps he was vegan? Regardless the experience as a whole was somewhat poor. And you’re front of house security man is (pun intended) a swine. 🐷

Great night out with friends. Well performed interpretation of a classic story that stands the test of time. Loved the audience inclusion parts. The two leads were clever and accomplished but the rest of the cast added to the fun with the small details. Beautiful theatre with friendly staff. Great night out
