“I doubt I’ll ever see a better production in my lifetime.” – The Wall Street Journal
Due to phenomenal demand, the multi-award winning and critically acclaimed Lincoln Center Theater’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I has extended its engagement for a final three weeks to Saturday 29th September at London's iconic Palladium. This is the very last opportunity West End audiences will have to see the Broadway stars reprise their original roles on the London stage.
Making their West End debuts are the original Broadway stars; reprising her Tony Award winning performance and ‘Broadway musical’s undisputed Queen’ (The Sunday Times), Kelli O’Hara (Anna), Tony and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (The King), and reprising her Tony Award-winning performance, Ruthie Ann Miles (Lady Thiang). Joining the cast are major Japanese film and television star Takao Osawa as the Kralahome, trusted adviser to The King of Siam, as well as West End star of Aladdin, Dean John-Wilson and Na-Young Jeon as the young lovers, Lun Tha and Tuptim.
What is The King and I about?
Set in Bangkok in the 1860’s, The King and I tells the story of the tempestuous and unconventional relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna: a British schoolteacher brought to Siam by the modernist King to teach his many wives and children.
With a superior score of treasured songs including; Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, and Shall We Dance, and featuring a company of over 50 world-class performers, The King and I is a testament to the lavish heritage of gloriously romantic musical theatre. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the greatest musical from the golden age of theatre, playing a limited engagement booking until 29 September 2018.

This was the best show we have seen for years in every way. The casting, acting, singing, choreography/dancing, costumes, sets, lighting were all A1. The performance standard of all the cast was through the roof, but what more can one say about Ruthie Ann Ellis's Lady Thiang. Her interpretation of the role was simply captivating and 'Something Wonderful' nothing short of ethereal. I do hope that some way can be found for the production to tour the country.

The who,e production was absolutely stunning. I was particularly impressed by the dancing which was culturally sensitive and excecuted faultlessly. The costumes were wonderful and the sets were very creative. The children were a delight and the singing by the actor who played Madame Thiang on Thursday 27th Sept. was incomparable. As you can tell I was completely entranced by the production.

It was a lovely and quite perfect performance by the whole cast. A complete delight to hear all those lovely songs again and haven't heard for a long time. I wish the production all the best and wonder if it is now touring, because it should, I really want the whole country to hear and be transported into this story. The production really brought out well the different life truths for the individuals within the story, including how difficult real change is for us, human pride and how to acknowledge and deal with new information that alters our initial beliefs and thoughts, the value of perseverance etc etc etc! Anna is such a likeable and characterful woman with life experience, still devoted to the memories and commitment of her lost marriage through the death of her husband. The subtle love of the senior wife for the king as well. What a lot this story offers us for today, it is not dated at all, even though it is about times gone by. We all do well to consider the deeper detail and depths of this lovely musical.

I was in the least expensive seats but still have a clear view and could see the whole stage . Not a lot of room for legs . I couldn't see the orchestra but the sound was wonderful and balanced . The staging was very good and the Show was true to the original . It was just as wonderful as I'd hoped it would be .

What an absolute treat it was to see such a well-produced, and beautifully choreographed show. The singing, dancing and staging was outstanding, and as someone who had seen the original film twice, it was very nostalgic and emotional too. The three people with me entirely share my sentiments. Congratulations to the outstanding cast and also the excellent orchestra!

Absolutely loved this and am at a loss to know why it is closing. The audience stood and cheered at the end. The voices, the actors, the costumes were just beautiful. It is the first time I've seen it on stage (though I have seen the film a dozen times!) and I don't think I will ever see a better performance.

The King and I exceeded our expectations on every level! The scenery, the costumes and dancing were absolutely amazing, but the singing of Anna, and Lady Thiang was simply stunning and the King lived up to his regal persona, with some very tender moments!! A real must see, we absolutely loved every minute.

I was looking forward to this show for weeks but boy .... were we in for a surprise ! I probably sobbed through 50% if it ... the singing and storyline was so powerful . The play performed for the king was the highlight ... amazing . The children were delightful and the king so brilliant. Apart from Les Mis ... the best show I have ever seen ! Well done to the whole production .

Fantastic performance. Very strong dancers and vocalists. One star less because the male lead (the king) was a very weak singer. He was entertaining due to his acting but the audience had to suffer through his solo pieces. Perhaps he was ill but in song, his words were illegible and notes fell flat. Otherwise, the set design was effectivee and quite authentic. All round an enjoyable evening out

The King and I transported me to another time, a different world in the way the musical genre is designed to do. The sets were incredible both in their use of technology and beauty on the eye. The singing was sublime and quite operatic in execution; I hate to sound old fashioned, but I could understand every word of every song! The costumes were simply beautiful: dresses with metres and metres of billowing material and sequinned, bejewelled trousers, tops and dresses. The acting fitted perfectly alongside the musical score and moved the musical along in a sympathetic way. Okay, I was watching Ken Watanabe and not Yul Brynner, who I saw in this role on the same stage in the late 1970s, but Watanabe made the role his own, with his own interpretation and style - a striking performance. I cried for the characters, the storyline and a musical stage heritage brought to life in 2018. A must see musical.

Ken Watanabe can't sing but neither could Yuil Briner, his acting was good though. Anna had too much of an American accent in the first scenes, but held up her Queen's English in the rest of the show. Performance was very much held up by the strength of the rest of the cast Tipton & Lady Chiang were outstanding. Loved the whole performance which took me back to my youth and watching it with my dearly missed mum at many Christmases.

This was absolutely brilliant. My wife and I., both agreed that this was of the best stage musicals we have seen in recent years. All singers had excellent voices, but Kelli O,Hara was outstanding. The whole show held attention from start to end and the Siamese children were a delight For us it is a great pity that it has only a limited run in London .

Really enjoyed this production. Ken Wantanabe as the king was fantastic and the understudy for Anne was equally as brilliant, not to mention the cute younger caste. A fabulous way to spend an evening. We sat in the stalls, a little cosy.
