Harold and Maude
Harold and Maude
Directed by Thom Southerland
Harold and Maude is an idiosyncratic fable told though the eyes of the most unlikely pairing: a compulsive, self-destructive young man who attends funerals for entertainment and a devil-may-care, septuagenarian bohemian.
Through Colin Higgins’ tale, we experience a way of seeing the world that looks directly into darkness, stresses our needs humour, the freedom to create and kindness while concluding that cynicism and despair are dead ends. Equal parts dark comedy and romantic innocence, Harold and Maude dissolves the line between darkness and light along with ones that separate people by class, gender and age.

Loved it very funny just disappointed the iconic lines "Harold loves Maude and Maude loves Harold " weren't said. Thought that was what it was all about!

Having seen the film many eons ago I was astonished by the ingenuity of how it was adapted to a tiny theatre with even the musicians taking acting roles, and very well done , too. Briefly, I loved it.

A charming and whimsical play, imaginatively staged, and with perfect performances throughout. The emerging relationship between Harold and Maude was beautifully realised, and very touching.

Such a quirky dark comedy. I’ve not seen the movie but I’ll definitely track it down to watch now. The play was very entertaining, hilarious all the way.

Great production. Well worth seeing for the very adaptable musicians themselves let alone Harold and Maud!

As a huge fan of the film I was intrigued to see how it would be translated to the stage and how the atmosphere would be conveyed without Cat Stevens' music to carry the emotions. The whole play was a delight from start to finish. Harold's "hobby" was portrayed very amusingly and the tender scenes were very moving. I loved every second. Congratulations to all involved, and particularly to the wonderful cast.

Lively and keen matinee performance. With a good cast who performed well. This small theatre is very intimate which adds to the show. A good afternoon at the theatre which we recommend.

After being a fan of the film, I was intrigued to see the play and how the heartwarming story was adapted for the stage. It proved to be a rewarding, moving, delightful experience. I was pleased to be able to see the wonderful Sheila Hancock and listen to her lovely voice. All the cast were excellent and the use of music enhanced the sublime entertainment. A unique theatrical experience.

Overlong, and tedious with just a few humerous moments and clever stage effects. I didn't enjoy it at all.

Was amazed when the interval came round, couldn't believe it was time already. Both leads were so convincing, the accompanying musicians and cast were supporting and not intrusive. One of the best performances I have seen for long enough.

I was enthralled as the staging and the quality of the cast drew me into this wonderful story. Sheila Hancock was magnificent - so powerful - not showing her age at all. Watching Bill Milner grow the morbid young man to a passionate being was delightful. The supporting cast/musicians delivered a beautifully balanced and sympathetic world for the story to unfold. I've spoken to my friends more about them than the two main players. Loved it all!

A fantastic performance! We really enjoyed our afternoon seeing the stage production of a favourite film of ours. As a musician I particularly enjoyed watching the live music which was cleverly intertwined with the acting.

What a wonderful afternoon we had watching 'Harold and Maude.' The play itself was a mix of comedic situations, philosophical ideas and pathos. The excellent and talented cast were almost on stage all the time supporting the action in ingenious ways. They all played an instrument and this added to the tragi/comic moments. Sheila Hancock was as captivating,as ever, and her relationship to 'Harold was endearing and real. Magnificent theatre.

The cast worked hard and the two leads were excellent. Mention should also be made of Joanna Hickman, who does sterling work as Harold's 3 dates. However, the concept of having the cast continually on stage didn't really work, as their presence distracted from, rather than augmenting, the action.

Pocket sized production of a universal reflection engagingly delivered with beautifully choreographed charm and lightness of touch. A highly original and captivating piece of theatrical story telling. My 19 yr and 13yr old boys both really enjoyed it as a first encounter, I loved it as a stage version of a cult film I half remembered seeing when I was Harolds age

Superb comedy that will make you laugh and cry. At times manic and over the top and then tender and moving. Great performances by the support cast but wonderful and at times intense from the two leads. Sheila and Bill good interplay and terrific in their own characters despite difference in ages. So glad I chose this whilst in London.

Loved every minute of this play. Characters played to perfection. I laughed and cried and just want to keep singing the song If theatre reads this is there way of getting words and tune? It’s so simple but I’ve ‘lost it’

This was a tour de force of acting and music with Sheila Hancock at her radiant best . This quirky and sometimes surreal play was delightful with the main character about to have her 80th birthday and planning direct action against the facelessness of modern bureaucracy. Very life-affirming and amusing.

Harold and Maude is one of my favourite films especially Cat Steven's musical contribution, which is why we made the journey from Suffolk to see the Show. I thought that without the Music it would struggle. I was wrong the two main performers were fantastic Ms Hancock gave a brilliant performance as Maude heads above Ruth Gordon's (literally) in the movie. Her presence made the premise of the play totally believable whilst Bill Milner's performance matched Miss Hancock's throughout the play. Finally the rest of the cast contributed positively with amusingly eccentric performancess both as actors and musicians.

Performances from all members of the cast were individually excellent which made the whole play slick and exciting to watch. The movement of scenery and props as part of the flow of the play was amazing in its simplicity. Sheila Hancock was superb as Maud, so serene and gentle in her portrayal.
