Strictly Ballroom The Musical

Adapted from Baz Luhrmann’s beloved and award-winning film, Strictly Ballroom has been transformed into a glorious stage musical. Combining the story’s heart, comedy and drama with white-hot dance, eye-popping costumes by four-time Oscar-winner Catherine Martin and over 40 classic chart hits, director and choreographer Drew McOnie has created an unforgettable production that will make your heart soar and your feet want to dance!

Strictly Ballroom is now playing at London’s Piccadilly Theatre, and stars Jonny Labey, Zizi Strallen and X Factor sensation Matt Cardle, alongside a dazzlingly talented company of the West End’s finest actors, singers and dancers.

What is Strictly Ballroom The Musical about?

Scott Hastings. Ballroom Dancer. Future Champion. Rebel.

When Scott’s radical dance moves raise eyebrows with the Australian Federation, he finds himself dancing with Fran, a beginner who has no moves at all. Inspiring each other, the couple find the courage to defy both convention and their families – and discover that to be a winner, your steps don’t need to be strictly ballroom…

This was a bit too much like pantomime for my taste. There are very bad puns, meaningless visual jokes e.g. why is there a ballroom dancer in the fridge, (what is that all about) and over acting, especially in the first half. If you think Claudia Winkleman on Strictly is funny, then you may like it. The gypsy flamenco part is excellent The second half was better, maybe I bought into it. The dancers are good, shame they are all dressed like pantomime dames. I do like the movie, and I do understand the concept- just think it was over done in this production.
