Royal Shakespeare Company: Coriolanus - William Shakespeare

A full-throttle war play that revels in the sweat of the battlefield, Coriolanus transports us back to the emergence of the republic of Rome.

Caius Martius Coriolanus is a fearless soldier but a reluctant leader. His ambitious mother attempts to carve him a path to power, yet he struggles to change his nature and do what is required to achieve greatness. Now he must decide who he really is and where his allegiances lie.

Set in a new city state struggling to find its feet, where the gap between rich and poor widens every day, this visceral production opens the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Rome season in London.

Following his sell-out hits Oppenheimer (2014) and Don Quixote (2016) in Stratford-upon-Avon, Season Director Angus Jackson directs rising talent Sope Dirisu in the title role.

The production was okay, but I expect a bit more from the RSC. The main actor spoke mechanically, and concentrated on a strictly militaristic interpretation of Coriolanus' character... the only bit he acted well was the pause because replying to the women's plea. Volumnia was well played, as was Aufidius. The production made me return to the play to re-read it.

Excellent cast. Slow build up. Eternal themes

Mixing races and genders made a confusing production even more confusing . The cast camped up the second act which I think the bard might have thought funny but not me. There was no heart in it and it all seemed very amateurish and poor.
