What’s Matilda about?
Matilda the Musical is the tale of a young girl with an extraordinary gift. Not only is Matilda clever, she’s also extremely funny and just a little bit naughty. Stuck with neglectful parents who barely know she exists, Matilda begins to realise that nothing will change unless she changes it herself. Unfortunately, school isn’t much of an escape. Headmistress-from-hell Miss Trunchbull isn’t too keen on children. In fact, she loathes them. Particularly children like greedy Bruce Bogtrotter…who’s off to the chokey. Which is as nasty as it sounds.
With a sharp, witty script by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by comedy genius Tim Minchin, Matilda the Musical gives new depth to Roald Dahl’s classic children’s story. Matilda the Musical is irreverent, deliciously dark and fabulously entertaining. We defy anyone not to find a new level of joy at the sight of Miss Trunchbull propelling little girls into the audience by their pigtails!
Matthew Warchus’ production cleverly combines the nastiness of Dahl’s story with the warmth of musical comedy, extracting every delicious drop of humour along the way. Tim Minchin’s songs are bright and brilliant. But what makes this show sing are the central performances by the young actors who alternate the role of Matilda. Their warmth and wit combines to ensure that you’ll be rooting for our hero every step of the way. This little girl has a very big heart.
The stage set for Matilda is magical in every sense of the word. Some scenes will take your breath away and you’ll leave wondering how on earth they did that! An extraordinary cast of both child and adult actors add to the fantastical feel of the entire production. This gorgeous, cheeky, uplifting show is wonderful for families, but is equally entertaining for adults. You never grow out of Roald Dahl!
Matilda the Musical songs
The sound of scraping violins and slightly-out-of-tune recorders is every parent’s worst nightmare. Fortunately they’re only the openers to the brilliantly comic Miracle. Soon, you’ll be laughing along to Tim Minchin classics like Naughty and The Hammer. Every song is a classic with instant hum-ability…but more than that, Tim Minchin’s lyrics are as deliciously dark as Dahl’s writing. When I Grow Up and Revolting Children have already entered the vocabulary of every little stage school horror the length and breadth of the country!
Matilda the Musical awards
Matilda has won a staggering 99 international awards, including twenty-four for Best Musical alone! These include 7 Olivier awards (the most ever won by a musical), 5 Whatsonstage Awards (including Best New Musical and Best West End Show), 6 Broadway World Awards (including Best Musical) and 2 Mousetrap Awards (including Best Family Show).
Matilda the Musical’s Magic Moments
We won’t give away any plot spoilers here, but look out for these five moments of jaw-dropping genius when you watch the show:
1. Miss Trunchbull’s entrance – if you think parents evening at your school was scary, you ain’t seen nothing yet!
2. Miss Trunchbull’s party trick of swinging kids round by their hair. Well, she was an Olympic hammer thrower before she turned to teaching.
3. Bruce Bogtrotter managing to scoff down an entire chocolate cake in front of the whole school
4. Magical powers –Uri Geller might be able to bend a spoon, but he’s got nothing on what Matilda can do!
5. Crunchem Hall – this twistedly torturous school makes Hogwarts look like a kindergarten!

“An absolute cracker of a show, bursting with dynamism, fizzing with verve.” Daily Express

Matilda The Musical (London) reviews
My first time to a musical with my family (wife and son 10 years old). It's always nice to look how are professional the young actors/actresses who partecipate to an english musical. The actress who interprets Matilda, simply amazing. For not native speaker, not so easy to understand. Better to know already the story to a better comprehension. Luca - Nicoletta - Edoardo
The show was excellent, the acting was spot on, the storyline was very good.
Brilliant I saw the show before at a different location but the actual performance at the Cambridge Theatre and the cast was fantastic, as I’ve mentioned it was my second time seeing it with my grandchildren and to be honest I was not really looking forward to it... however the cast were brilliant and I now keep saying to the kids how good it was do well done !!!
Kids were very good.
The settings were fantastic, the child actor was incredible. We found the story slow, and the actress playing the mother inaudible. She screeched most of the time and it was very difficult to hear her dialogue. In all we found it too long
One of the best musicals I've seen. Such a talented cast....loved it from start to finish.
A birthday treat for my 9 year old granddaughter. She has read the book many times and was thrilled to see it performed on stage.
The audience ranged from children who needed booster seats to grandparents, all seemed to enjoy the production, which was amazing, from the set to the acting and singing, was a wonderful nights entertainment. Well worth seeing
Good
Was reet good
Fantastic
Really enjoyed it. Started off a bit slow and not really connected to the story but then picked up well. Possible a touch too long but overall the acting, coreography and musical numbers were great
great fun for any ages . seen it twice and happily go again.
Loved every minute . Tim Minchin is a genius !! Funny , exciting , clever - a terrific musical .
My wife and I took our daughter and granddaughters to watch Matilda and were amazed by the talent and professionalism displayed by the cast especially the children who we all thought were brilliant. It really was a fantastic show and one which, I’m sure, will stay in our memories for years to come.
Show overall was good. Children excellent.
Amazing, great cast, fun for all the family. To have my 15 teen year old love it. to me that speaks for itself....
Brilliant musical! Great performance. Me and my daughter both enjoyed.
Very enjoyable performance, found the first half, just a little bit long. Singers voices were amazing.
Three generations, aged eight to seventy-one, all enjoyed this magical show. Can't recommend it enough - the kids were amazing and the show runs at a very slick pace.
The most amazing production, outstanding.. The child all performed excellent, the cast we on point. The story line strays off from the original film slightly but overall an outstanding theatrical production. Well worth the watch
Very good performance - would of expected more props in comparison to other theatre Ive seen, but a very good show. I liked how there was comedy infused aswell! Would recommend
Brilliant amazing!
Totally incredible
It was very good, I clapped and cheered lots. I loved it when Matilda sang on her own. (Ellie aged 7)
I went with my family and we loved it , the music and the actors are so good , Matilda voice is incredible, I really recommend going to this musical with your kids , you’ll have great time
A fantastic show for all the family. It was a Christmas Eve surprise and it left everyone singing the songs on the way home. The little girl playing Matilda was amazing. Definitely will be recommended this show to our friends
An imaginative, thrilling, breath taking and I dare say fun-filled take on a master classic- not a mean feat by all counts. Was a real treat for my kids.
Matilda was absolutely amazing ! Took my 4 year old for her birthday ! So so good !
Couldn't fault the production, it was excellent. It was rather more 'pantomime' than I had expected and very much aimed at primary age kids. The number of school kids in the audience (a matinee) obviously created a certain level of disturbance (especially the 50 or so who arrived about 15 mins into the show and blocked our view for a good 5-10 minutes!).
Outstanding show I took my daughter and two grandchildren age 10 and 3 as early Christmas gift. We all enjoyed the show. Outstanding performance costumes music everything. Wonderful highly recommended
Phenomenal show! My favourite childhood book was brought to life in the most incredible way! The cast was amazing, especially the children. I will definitely be seeing this again!! Thank you!
The show was fantastic! Booked this for daughters birthday surprise and as this was her first London show we couldn't have asked for better! She is now hooked and wants to see it again. The whole show was wonderful, cast, stage, effects etc. Looking forward to our next visit to see it 😁
Such a great show pity the people at the front door were so rude
Hard to put into words. The cast were were all amazing very professional. Production was excellent and delivery was spot on. Highly recommend.
it was a birthday present for my daughters I didn't realise when I booked the tickets that it was the first day. it was brilliant and lovely way to spend a afternoon after travelling all the way from bristol
Perfect show for all ages
Really enjoyed it excellent
What a wonderful show Such great acting, colourful, great story and so entertaining Would definitely recommend First class show
Excellent show.
I took my sister to see this for her birthday as Matilda was a favourite film growing up. I was worried that she would not like it but she loved it and can not wait to see it again
Booked this for my daughter's birthday (She's 24 and grew up watching the film and reading the book) her sister came too, (she's 27) we all loved it! the cast were amazing the scenes and singing and dancing were superb, we loved miss Trunchbull and we will definitely make time to see it again.
Absolutely brilliant I brought my 10 yr old for her here for her bday she loved it fantastic show
Amazing show, my 6 year old daughter and I both really enjoyed it. Highly recommend it. I would not recommend it for younger children as some of the stage affects can be frightening and it’s a long performance to sit through( left my 3 year old at home ). Older children are familiar with the story.
Show was much better than what I was expecting and funnier, so I was pleasantly surprised. The staff whilst watching I found rude! Whilst I appreciate that you would like people not to record the show, texting someone to ensure your child is ok whilst you are watching the show and being spoken to rudely, you seriously need to have a rethink about how you speak to people and also see the fact that they are not recording the show.
It was a fantastic show and felt the show catered for all ages. All the cast were exceptional and we would highly recommend to others
Very good show
Excellent production. Thoroughly enjoyed by kids and grown ups alike.
The 3 children I took thoroughly enjoyed the performances ; the singing and dancing was really good. There seem to have been some changes to the production since I saw it 10 years ago ( don’t remember the father doing that stand up routine at start of second half ) . Loved hearing when I grow up the 3 times it was sung, as it’s my favourite song . Lovely and brightened up a wet afternoon.
Hi all we travelled from the northwest to watch Matilda with our daughter Matilda and her friend Chloe we had an amazing time show was a credit to the actors and all involved highly recommend thanks for such a lovely evening. Les jo Matilda and Chloe
