Yank! A WWII Love Story
Yank! A WWII Love Story
“Some stories didn’t make it into the history books”
In 1943, young Mid-Westerner Stu serves in the army as a reporter for Yank Magazine, the journal ‘for and by servicemen’. Following the men in Charlie Company, YANK! the musical explores what it means to be a man and fall in love… and struggle to survive in a time and place where the odds are stacked against you.
Based on the Off-Broadway hit production, YANK! transfers to London following a highly acclaimed run at the Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester earlier this year. Directed by James Baker, with a story and music by American brothers David and Joseph Zellnik, the musical pays homage to the timeless music of the 1940s.
“YANK! is sensational” - Attitude

“...earthed with real sincerity and powered by a strong ensemble who bring a robustly masculine grace” - The Stage
“James Baker’s direction, James Cleeve’s musical supervision and especially Chris Cuming’s choreography hit standards far in advance of what seems reasonable to expect from the fringe” - The Guardian

My friend Michael and I enjoyed Yank immensely when we saw it on Friday, 11th August. Elaine Paige mentioned it a short while ago on her Sunday show so its thanks to her that we heard about it and I must say it exceeded all expectations. Outstanding acting, singing and dancing and truly memorable performances from ALL concerned plus great orchestra too, it was slick and fast-paced and we were in tears of laughter during the hilarious moments (the Betty Grable number - "don't tell Ethel" - and the reaction of the three guys when Stuart said he didn't like "Gone With The Wind" were priceless), plus tears of sadness and, yes rage, in the more dramatic scenes at how badly gay people were treated in the past - and the fact that homophobia is still rife today. We went away feeling we had experienced something very special last night and Yank can now be added to my list of all-time favourite shows. Please pass on my best wishes to the cast and everyone connected with the show, my congratulations to you all. Kind regards, David, Crouch End, London N8

Wonderful choreography, story-telling and performances! Not a single weak link in the cast. The story telling is in turns funny, heartfelt and poignant; the intimate theatre space means you're drawn into the story from the beginning. I hope this show runs in the west end for a long time to come!

What a treat - humour without being too cheesy, tenderness without being over sentimental, great choreography and creativity with the lighting - well done everyone! And never been to Charing Cross Theatre - great intimate venue.
