Matthew Bourne's Cinderella
Matthew Bourne's Cinderella
Following the sold-out and critical success of The Red Shoes, New Adventures return to Sadler's Wells this Christmas with one of our most popular and beloved productions, Matthew Bourne's Cinderella – a thrilling and evocative love story set in London during the Second World War, which forms part of the company's 30th anniversary celebrations.
★★★★ "A dazzling spectacle" - The Times
"A Valentine to the Power of Love" - LA Times
Matthew Bourne's interpretation of the classic fairy tale, has, at its heart, a true war-time romance. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz.
With Lez Brotherston's sumptuous costumes and sets, which won an Olivier Award for his original designs, and lighting by Olivier Award-winning Neil Austin, Cinderella will be performed in surround sound, designed by Paul Groothuis and featuring a specially commissioned recording played by a 60 piece orchestra. Matthew Bourne's vivid storytelling has never been more heart-stopping and touching, and will take the audience into the heart of Prokofiev's magnificent score, and the sights and sounds of war-torn London.

A magnificient, inventive, beautiful production. Loved the Angel of Death and especially the London Underground scene. Just wonderful...

Although we could not book better seats , we had to have 2nd circle, the performance was brilliant. Ladies toilets, as with all theatres ,were too packed and queues

ThIs is another wonderful unexpected and very lateral interpretation of a well known and loved theme. Bourne's imagination knows no bounds. The choreography was,as always, perfect and interesting with such expression that you know exactly what is going on in the dance and where you are in The story. We loved it. I have given 4 stars because the most exquisite for me was swan lake which would warrant more than five stars if there were more. Hence 4.7 for this production.

The attention to detail of every part of the experience was exceptional. The integration of dance, light, settings and effects was of the highest order. To the point where after a story supported by "heavy" music and after all formalities we were sent on our way lifted by Glenn Miller joy. Thank you

Bourne didn't disappoint with his contemporary twist to the fairy tale Cinderella perhaps confusing the little girl who I overheard calling the production weird in the toilets during the break. The dancing and choreography was delivered to perfection usual but perhaps not as dramatic or as jaw dropping as in Bourne's other productions. The one criticism from me was that the storyline was a bit disjointed and did confuse the audience at times. Overall another feather in Bourne's cap but it not my favourite from his portfolio as this time the feather didn't blow me away.

I cannot praise this production enough..... it is a brilliant adaptation of an old favourite, totally thrilling every step of the way. The sets are breathtaking , and the attention to detail - both in the staging and the choreography - is outstanding. One could watch this Cinderella endlessly, and experience something new every time. A triumph!

I never realised at time of booking it was a ballet. It was therefore not as enjoyable as i hoped it would be. And i love theatre! However the production itself was actually really good. The dancing was great. The female lead was brilliant, and so was the female villian. It just unfortunately was not my cup of tea and not a great adaptation of Cinderella for me personally. The stage changes and clever prop use to show the story was great also. My views are based on a Cinerella fan girl perspective who has never seen ballet, and not towards the dancers or makers of the show.

Beautiful set and costumes. Characters didn’t stand out with the exception of Cinders. Fairy godmother absolutely annoying throughout. Overall very disappointed with this over hyped production.

An exceptional show! All the dancers are brilliant + animated as if they are performing it for the 1st time. Such an interesting take on the Cinderella story with lots of amusing asides which we loved.

We went with our 11 and 14 years old children to "educate" them. "Sadlers wells", "ballet" were for me synonym of refinement, culture, enchantment.....This show was bringing nothing of that sort and was unnecessarily rude....Obvious males oral sex, made look like female doing oral sex to male, rude sexual gestures..... Most scenes started with the show ON the shoe until the "blind" was brought up which was distracting and adding to the "cheap" show feeling.

A magical enchanting ballet, amazing sets and scenery - so clever and imaginative. The usual comic touches and characters along with a darker side as seems to be the way with Matthew Bourne’s ballets. Full of surprises and fabulous dancers. All the principal characters were outstanding, just loved the ‘godfather’, thoroughly enjoyed it all, fantastic.

Three of us loved Bourne’s contemporary re telling of a favourite fairy tale. Prokofiev’s score and blitz torn London were a magical combination.

My 15 year old son and I had a wonderful evening last night at Sadler's Wells seeing Matthew Bourne's Cinderella. The sets, lighting and 1940s sound effects were atmospheric from the start, and the dancers had an incredible way of telling their story of Cinderella as adapted so creatively and engagingly by Matthew Bourne's. My son particularly enjoyed some of the comedic touches and character details.

Wonderful performance. The scene changes were very clever, the outfits were beautiful. And the dancing was good. However this was slightly superseded by the fact the music was incredibly loud and jarring at times (at not just because of the genre!) and the theatre was too warm which I often find when I met at saddlers wells. It was a little bit too long in my opinion too however perhaps I wouldn’t have felt that had I not been so warm. Overall definetly an enjoyable Friday night though!

Great energetic dancing and acting ! The character dancers were fantastic, particularly the wicked step mother. The stage reflected the period with great authenticity . The scene which ended with the blitz was awesome. The time seemed to fly by. The performance was over all too quickly. I'd go again tomorrow.

Another fantastic Matthew Bourne production. We thoroughly enjoyed Cinderella and felt moved by the interpretation set in WW2 . The choreography was stunning as we're the costumes and set We are looking forward to booking Swan Lake later this year .

Brilliant choreography,Cinderella was superb. Not quite so impressed with the male lead. I preferred Red shoes, it was more colourful & romantic in the scenes the costumes. however I can't wait for the next one (Swan Lake)

Totally enthralling performance. Superb Choreography and Staging. The story was easy to follow as it was so well portrayed, and fitted to the music perfectly. Very very clever with subtle humour even amidst the darkness of the wartime setting. Brilliant Brilliant Show.

Very original take on this classic story. Great dancing and performing. Enjoyed it although overall it is quite dark atmosphere of the show.

Fantastic dancing and choreography but completely lost the plot with the story e.g went from a WW1 scene to Cafe de Paris. Then Paddington station. Also the clothes were wrong - not long skirts for WW2, They should have been authentic The supper was great and the food and staff excellent. Appreciated coffee and tea in the interval.

A beautiful, theatrical ballet, taking a lovely twist on an absolute classic. The sets and costumes were exemplorary, and the choreography demonstrating moments of pure ingenuity. The dancers not only danced fantastically but represented their characters flawlessly too - this made the performance easy to follow and constanty enaging. Sadler Wells provides an affordable bar which you can pre-order drinks for the intervals to save you from queuing.

This was such a wonderful show. Something for everyone. Just what you need to cheer you up during the January blues ! Despite the WWII theme. The curtain raiser introduced by Matthew Bourne himself was a real bonus and a heart walming addition. Thank you
