Giselle
Giselle
English National Ballet presents a classic production of one of the greatest Romantic ballets.
Giselle is a haunting story of innocence and betrayal, a timeless tale about the redemptive power of love.
A young peasant girl, Giselle, is in love with the handsome Albrecht, a Duke who hides from her his nobility and his engagement to another. When she discovers he has deceived her, she is driven to madness, and dies of a broken heart.
The vengeful spirits of abandoned brides gather by her grave, ready to welcome Giselle into their fold, and force men to dance to their death. Will Giselle’s love protect Albrecht from his fate?
Moving from the sunny optimism of Giselle’s idyllic village life to a moonlit world of mystery and menace, Mary Skeaping’s production of GISELLE features some of ballet’s most dramatic scenes and otherworldly images. Adolphe Adam’s score, performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic, adds to the lush atmosphere.
At the London Coliseum from 11-22 January 2017.

My granddaughter and I had a wonderful evening. The performers, including the orchestra, did a great job. The stage sets and costumes enhanced the whole performance.

A truly excellent production: the mood and atmosphere were just right: and the dancing perfection. Thank you! Small grievance: too much dry ice in Act II.

I saw it on Sunday, with my grandchildren. We loved it though I was a bit disappointed to realised that Alina Cojocaru was not going to be the Giselle!

Your production is simply exquisite and beautifully presented. I could see it many times over. Thank you. One grievance: too much dry ice in Act obscured the action.

This was a lovely production with especially good dancing from Cesar Corrales as Albecht. Giselle herself grew into the part as the drama unfolded and the sequences towards the end were very beautiful. I always find the first act less fulfilling than the second partly because of the peasant scenes. However, a lovely evening and a lovely theatre

A veteran of many ballets, I had somehow never managed to see Giselle performed. This production blew me away. The dancing was astonishing; such precision and power delivered with such delicacy and grace! Costumes, lighting, staging and the sublime orchestra all combined to make a performance I will never forget.

Beautiful show, the set, the music and dancing was just perfect. I'd advise to read the synopsis before the show begins to understand what's happening.

Stunning performance. Deeply moving performances which conveyed the poignancy of the tragic love story with a passionate and ethereal quality. I felt myself transported by the beauty of the production, subtle yet dramatic performances and the ethereal quality of the set and the lighting particularly in the second act. I fell in love alongside Giselle, agonised with the male protagonists and wept at the despair of each character in the second act. I could watch this performance again and again.

Such a lovely production. The first as was ok, it was a bit drab with all the brown-coloured costumes. The second act, though, was beautiful. I loved the choreography, the story the costumes and the lighting so much in the second act. Brilliant!

I was not so keen on the first act, lacked colour and vibrancy, but the second act was magnificent. The lighting and the ghostly poignancy was absorbing . I and my son were spellbound and the lines that the corps de ballet achieved were excellent. The male lead was strong but light and very convincing

I was lucky enough to see Margot Fontyn and Rudolph Nureyev perform at Covent Garden when I was only 9yrs old. That performance has lived with me and made me a hugh ballet fan. So I was very excited to see how this performance would be. I was delighted to read in the programme that Mary Skeaping had kept to the original score. But I was blown away by the second half! Wow, the set was absolutely magical and surpassed my childhood memory. Eliza Badeness dancing as Giselle was inspired as was Cesarean Corrales as Albrecht. The Willis were dramatic and breathtakingly beautiful. I loved the way that they glided amongst the scenery. Giselle slipping away from her grave side was touching. I am sure that in the Covent Garden version they used a trap door for Fonteyn to suddenly appear, but this sliding floor worked beautifully. I must also mention that The orchestra was faultless. I could watch it every night! Thank you so much.

My daughter and I attended the performance on 18th Jan. The soloists were superb and the corp de ballet were pure majic in Act 2. The quality was of the highest standard and it would be hard for it to be surpassed. Thank you to the Coloseum for staging this. We shall want to attend more English Ballet performances.

Now in my retirement I'm revising my childhood love of ballet. This production of Giselle had all the magic and romance my eleven year old self had imagined when I listened to my pocket money LP. Every moment was enchanting.

So beautiful so beautiful! Wonderful dancers, great performance! Everyone was great. However, some audience had the audacity to clap halfway when the leading roles came out I want to smack them! It's blatant disregard to other performers on the stage.

One could not have wished to see a better (traditional) production of Giselle. It was stunningly danced by the company and the corps deserve a special mention; utterly captivating particularly in the second act. The production had excellent production values and was enchanting. David Walkers designs certainly stand the test of time. A special evening indeed and it was wonderful to see the Coli packed out.
