Vanities The Musical

They're pretty. They're popular. They're clueless.

Lauren Samuels (Bend it Like Beckham, BBC’s Over the Rainbow, Grease), Ashleigh Gray (Wicked, Cool Rider) and Lizzy Connolly (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Xanadu) star in Vanities, a classic American musical making its European debut.

Vanities is the hilarious and heartfelt story about three best friends growing up in Dallas at a time when image and style were more important than brains and ambition. Vanities explores how these women’s warped view of the world shaped them, for better and worse, through a rich original score that blends girl group harmonies of the 60s and 70s with a contemporary musical theatre score.

Directed and choreographed by Racky Plews (Footloose, American Idiot), with a book by Jack Heifner and music and lyrics by David Kirshenbaum, Vanities makes its London debut in time for the 10th anniversary of the musical and 40th anniversary of the play on which it is based. It’s time to go back to 1963 and watch Mary, Kathy and Joanne obsess over their cheerleader routines, choose their sororities, plan their wedding outfits – because even though the President has been shot and America’s on the brink of a war, if the girls just stay popular and don’t lose their looks everything will be okay… right?

Vanities: The Musical is compelling and a resounding success.'

  • What's On Stage

    Sep 29, 2016

Racky Plews' excellent production has three superb performances at its heart. Onstage the entire time, Lauren Samuels (Mary), Ashleigh Gray (Kathy) and Lizzy Connolly(Joanne) are the leading light of this show. They are funny, silly, sad and real, and their performances bring layers - which just aren't there in the text - to their characters. Each one is nicely distinct - Samuels with her bored eyes and fake smile, Connolly with her home-girl obliviousness and Gray with her neurotic need to control. Their voices are uniformly great, dealing with the complicated songs beautifully. It is a joy to watch and hear them work together.'

A gem of a production that is equal parts bubbly and entertaining to sentimentality. Sharp, sensitive, heartwarming and completely relatable. Wonderfully sincere entertainment.'

Lovely small studio, like being in someone's large front room! All seat are good, we had back row which we preferred, front row seats you are very close as in 'on the stage' if that's what you like. Show was amazing. Would definitely go back to this Studio. All staff were brilliant too. Very courteous and very pleasant.
