Ragtime
Ragtime
Thom Southerland directs a new production of Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Terrence McNally's multi Tony award winning musical, Ragtime. It is the turn of the 20th Century in New York. An era is exploding. A century is spinning. And the people are moving in rhythm and rhyme to the music of Ragtime. Based on the novel by E.L Doctorow, Ragtime weaves together the story of three groups in America, represented by Coalhouse Walker Jr, a Harlem musician; Mother and her white, middle class family in New Rochelle; and Tateh, a Jewish immigrant who has come to America with his daughter seeking a new life. Their fictional lives become dramatically intertwined with one another as well as with historical figures including Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, JP Morgan and Henry Ford. Ragtime led the 1998 Tony Awards with 12 nominations, winning 4 including Best Book by Terrence McNally and Best Original Score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. We really enjoyed the show even though it was performed as a concert rather than a show due to the fact that a lot of the performers were sick. They must take a lot of credit for carrying on whilst reading from the script. The lady playing the Cello was brilliant.

Passion, action and a real humdinger of a show. The music and singing were terrific, the passion from the all the cast was there for everyone to see and it was infectious. What an excellent show and well worth struggling with the rain and the traffic to see. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys good theatre and musicals.

Surprised and delighted by the show. Surprised only because I would never have thought a show or such texture and complexity could be staged on so narrow a space. Full marks to all performers, but especially to the female violin and cello players, because they had an awful lot of acting, singing and dancing to do as well as play their instruments. But special mention for whoever did the lighting. Best lighting I've seen in the West End for ages.

This is an incredibly committed, tight and talented ensemble. The players literally disappear into the crowd until their turn comes to take centre stage. Both the acting and musicianship are just wonderful (the cast are also the band). They take us into the immigration and racial tensions, dilemmas and tragedies faced/endured by New Yorkers at the start of the 20th Century. The evening is a stark reminder that those tensions and dilemmas are still faced by us the audience, by countless others within yards of this London venue and far beyond - and by the US electorate. Then there's Stephen Flaherty's score...
