Following a critically-acclaimed run at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, David Evans’ revival of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s iconic Show Boat transfers to London’s West End.

Based on Edna Ferber’s bestselling novel, Show Boat follows the lives and loves of the stevedores, performers and stagehands on a Mississippi River show boat over the course of forty years. Set from the 1880s through the 1920s, Show Boat’s 1927 première on Broadway changed the American musical forever by introducing themes that the typically light, unrealistic operettas and musical comedies of the time did not touch. Exploring racial prejudice, women’s rights, alcoholism and enduring love, the importance and quality of this sensational musical was immediately appreciated by audiences and critics alike, as was its sublime and pioneering score, which includes the classics “Make Believe”, “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” and “Ol’ Man River”.

Full of feeling and rich, gripping characters, Daniel Evans’ celebrated production of Show Boat features exuberant choreography by Alistair David, dynamic sets by Lez Brotherston and powerful direction by David White. A vibrant snapshot of an America coming to terms with modernity, Show Boat is a must-see.

We had a really wonderful afternoon and enjoyed seeing the excellent production of 'Showboat' with such a brilliant cast and a show full of memorable songs and a very clever set. We came away from the theatre feeling very satisfied and happy.

Having only ever seen the film of Show Boat we were really excited to see what the theatre production would offer and we weren't disappointed. We missed the chance to see it in Sheffield but had heard great things about it. It mostly follows the same story as the film but there are extra characters and songs which really added to it. It's full of great songs like Ol Man River, Make Believe, Why Do I Love You, Can't Help Loving Dat Man etc. It's also full of dance numbers, beautiful costumes, a clever set and tons of emotion. We loved it.

Very energetic, powerful and emotional performances and the singing was beautiful. Such a shame it won't be running any longer. This is one of my favourite musicals. I was really looking forward to watching it and was in no way disappointed. Congratulations to each and every performer.
