Kenneth Branagh - Harlequinade
Harlequinade
All On Her Own
By Terence Rattigan
Cast includes JAYGANN AYEH, TOM BATEMAN, KENNETH BRANAGH, JESSIE BUCKLEY, VERA CHOK, JACK COLGRAVE HIRST, JOHN DAGLEISH, HADLEY FRASER, ANSU KABIA, STUART NEAL, ZOË RAINEY, MIRANDA RAISON, MICHAEL ROUSE, JOHN SHRAPNEL, ZOË WANAMAKER, KATHRYN WILDER and JIMMY YUILL.
In this rarely seen comic gem, a classical theatre company attempts to produce The Winter’s Tale and Romeo and Juliet, while the intrigues and dalliances of the company members are accidentally revealed with increasingly chaotic and hysterical consequences.
The behind-the-scenes world takes centre stage in Terence Rattigan’s affectionate celebration of the lunatic art of putting on a play.
Kenneth Branagh will perform and co-direct with Rob Ashford.
Zoe Wanamaker will also perform Terence Rattigan’s dramatic monologue titled All On Her Own prior to every performance of Harlequinade. This never-seen-before production dramatises the story of a woman, alone at midnight in London, who has a secret and a burden to share.

The masterclass in monologue that Ms Wannamaker performed as a dark prelude to the main play was a privelege to witness. Very moving and completely engaging. What a superb performance. The hilarious and cutting Harlequinade that followed (after the projection of a vintage infomercial to educate us on CEMA) was top class entertainment. A treat to see Mr Brannagh on stage and sending his profession up so perfectly. Highly amusing and a brilliant cast.

One supposes the idea of prefacing a raucous comedy with a thankfully brief miserably sad price makes both emotions heightened. That being the objective this programme works very well.

Wasn't sure what to expect as I didn't know the plays - but both were wonderful in their own ways. Zoe Wanamaker was excellent in the first and then shamelessly sent herself up in the second. The lovely thing about the second one was that the cast appeared to be having such a good time! Highly recommended.

Two fantastic productions. An afternoon of tears of sadness, followed by laughter. Just what life's about. All On Her Own was moving beyond words. Whilst Harlequinade was an energetic and hilarious farce, beautifully acted by everyone involved. Loved every minute! Thank you for such a great afternoon.

All the reviews I had read before going were a little scathing of Harliquinade being a "flimsy farce" . Well excuse me but some of us non pretentious, normal people actually like to be entertained when we go to the theatre. I thought this was well written and not at all dated. It was well acted and Kenneth Branagh's comic timing and delivery was particularly brilliant and had the audience laughing out loud. I left the theatre feeling like I had been enormously entertained. I also felt that Zoe Wanamaker in "all on her own" was compelling and equally well done.

After flying in from New York, I was thrilled to visit the Garrick the next evening and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Good luck to the Garrick and to Kenneth Branagh especially. Loved it and found it hilarious.

Theatre at it's very best. Side splittingly funny from start to finish! Kenneth Branagh and all his cast were terrific - a brilliant farcical performance. Zoe Wanamaker's monologue "All On Her Own" was a tour de force - I'm still thinking about it this morning. Such a clever performance.

There are in fact 2 things ; Harlequinade and On her own. The latter is a monologue by Zoe Wanamaker an is clever but the star is Harlequinade which is great fun but in a curiously old fashioned style which I personally loved. It is veryfunny with actors hamming it up and thoroughly enjoying themselves. Fast paced too, lots going on and lots of small cameos that add enormously to the fun

For many a long year I've wanted to see Ken Brannagh on stage. Retirement gave me the opportunity and having chosen a play I didn't know, was a little trepidacious it would live up to expectations. Of course it did - in spades! Harlequinade was superbly produced, directed and acted. It was very, very funny. The Garrick was the perfect theatre for this production and we enjoyed the whole experience. Zoe Wannamaker's performance in All On Her Own was an added bonus. Beautifully acted, poignant and funny, it was the perfect companion to Harlequinade .

Fun, great entertainment. Clever, witty, amusing portrayal of Dame Maud by Zoë Wannamaker. Miranda Raison playing Edna Selby stole the show. Audience seemed to love it and Harlequinade will be a play people will want to see.. regardless of critics! Kenneth Branagh is the perfect Arthur Gosport.
