What’s The Book of Mormon about?
Devout Mormon missionary-in-waiting Elder Kevin Price is keen to teach his classmates how to convert people to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (“Hello!”), by just ringing their doorbells and smiling winningly. But Elder Price’s real dream is to be sent to Orlando, Florida for his two-year mission. Things go dramatically amiss when, instead, he’s sent to Uganda with Mormon misfit Elder Cunningham in tow.
Soon, these two ill-matched Mormon boys are completely out of their depth; robbed at gunpoint and sharing a village with locals whose motto is “Hasa Diga Eebowai” (something too rude to print here!). Worse is yet to come when the local Warlord arrives to terrorise the village. As the situation spirals out of control, Elder Price begs for a transfer to Orlando.
Feeling abandoned but determined to do good, Elder Cunningham stays on, attempting to fulfil his mission to convert the villagers to Mormonism. When his best efforts to convert the village fail, Cunningham decides to liven things up by introducing new characters into the Mormon story – including hobbits, Lieutenant Uhura, Darth Vader and Yoda.
Across the Atlantic, a repentant Elder Price realises that he must return to Africa to help his friend, Elder Cunningham. Reunited, things soon descend into chaos as the Warlord, General Butt F***ing Naked returns. When Elder Price attempts to convert the General to the Mormon faith, things don’t go too well…resulting in Price visiting the local doctor to have his copy of the Book of Mormon removed from his rectum.
Can the boys achieve their mission and finally leave the villagers safe from General Butt F***ing Naked? Will the Mission President ever accept Darth Vader and Yoda into the Mormon faith? Find out with tickets to The Book of Mormon – the funniest West End show and voted Best Musical at the Grammy, Tony and Olivier Awards!
The Book of Mormon is a musical comedy with music, lyrics and book by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. It’s a satirical look at the beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Parker and Stone (the creative team behind animated comedy South Park) joined forces with Lopez after seeing and loving his work on Avenue Q, and it’s this fusion of comedy, satire, and song-writing brilliance that makes The Book of Mormon such a hit with audiences, whether it’s your first visit or your hundredth!
The Book of Mormon songs
Musical The Book of Mormon helps tell the story of two Latter-day Saints missionaries, with songs including: Hello, Two by Two, You and Me (But Mostly Me), Hasa Diga Eebowai, Turn It Off, I Am Here For You, All American Prophet, Sal Tlay Ka Siti, Man Up, Making Things Up Again, Spooky Mormon Hell Dream, I Believe, Baptize Me, I Am Africa, Joseph Smith American Moses and Tomorrow Is A Latter Day.
The Book of Mormon awards
The Book of Mormon won an impressive nine Tony Awards, including Best New Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.
The London production went on to add wins for Best New Musical and Best Theatre Choreographer amongst four Olivier Award statuettes.
The show also won a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre album.
Five Things You Might not know about The Book of Mormon
We all love The Book of Mormon, but how much do you really know about this long-running West End favourite? Here are five fun facts about the show:
1. Fears of mass protests about the content of the show turned out to be unwarranted. In fact, The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints has even started advertising in programmes with phrases like “You’ve seen the play, now read the book” and “The Book is always better!”
2. Many people know Trey Parker and Matt Stone through their work on South Park – less familiar to the public is the name Robert Lopez…that is until people find out he’s one half of the husband & wife song-writing team behind Disney’s Frozen, Frozen II, and Coco. He’s the youngest person ever to have won the “EGOT” (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards) for his song-writing, and now the only person ever to win them all at least twice!
3. The Book of Mormon and Frozen have another connection – Josh Gad, the actor who originated the role of Elder Cunningham on Broadway went on to provide the voice of Olaf in Disney’s Frozen.
4. One of the funniest lines in the show - “I have maggots in my scrotum!” – almost never happened…originally, the line was “I actually thought the third Matrix was the worst one” – a recurring joke around the fact that the Book of Mormon is the third book in a biblical trilogy.
5. Great musicals don’t happen overnight. The seed of an idea for The Book of Mormon was planted in 2003 - it took a full eight years of writes and rewrites before it finally came to the Broadway stage…and another three before making it across the Atlantic to the Prince of Wales Theatre!

If you're lucky enough to somehow have a ticket for this, the most cryingly good night out to have come along for years, and are by any chance looking forward to a smug few British-liberal hours sneering at the mad imbecilities of self-righteous Americans and organised religion, I have to tell you that you'll be disappointed. The Book of Mormon is far, far cleverer, far kinder, far more nuanced than that, and one of its many surprises is that it sent an enraptured, ecstatic audience home with an odd sense of having come, somehow, to really like Mormons.

This is the second time I’ve seen this show and we took my son as part of his birthday gift. We had the most amazing time and I’d forgotten how truly outrageously funny this show is. Very un-pc but what else would you expect from its creators! LOVED IT!

This musical is a true feast for both the ears and eyes. I loved it. I found myself laughing from the start and right to the end, along with many others there. It was such fun and very uplifting. The dancing was superb and the orchstra played with great enthusiasm. What a performance. I highly recommend this to anyone.

Fun, rude down to earth. If you liked Spitting Image or Monty Python you'll get the humour in this show. Expect colourful language but that's part of the fun

I’m so shocked at the blatant racism in this play - this was the most unsettling thing I’ve ever been subjected to, let alone paid to experience. Before anyone goes to see this - be prepared for a completely ridiculous and inaccurate portrayal of Uganda and Africa in general. My and my mom left at intermission because we couldn’t sit through anymore of the uncomfortable feeling of a room full of mainly white people laughing at a racist depiction of Africa. We thought this was going to be a funny/provocative play about white religion / Morman life etc when in reality it was an ignorant blatantly racist production that enforces a narrative that Africans are savages and need saving. Do not see this play.

Worst show I have ever seen . Foul mouth and blasphemous. Also saying that having sex with a baby to not to get aids is not funny and should not be on stage or any where. Left show at interval.

5 stars for.the performers. The girl who played the young Ugandan girl was particularly outstanding. I hope I see more of her in more things. The show itself was disappointing. It was offensive....which i like if its done in a satirical enough manner to be funny ( which is exactly what I expected from South Park creators), but this just wasn't that funny and in many ways just very sad.

Such a fabulous show. Leave your woke friends outside & go enjoy fun, politically incorrect humour, almost unheard of in today’s age. You will come out singing & still laughing ... and wishing humour could always be taken with a pinch of salt. Loved it.
