What’s MAMMA MIA! about?
Set on a gorgeous Greek island, hit musical MAMMA MIA! tells the story of Sophie, a bride-to-be who wants nothing more than for her father to walk her down the aisle. That’s going to be tricky though, because Sophie doesn’t know who her father is.
Sophie’s fiercely independent mum, Donna, had three relationships which ever-so-slightly overlapped. So any of three men could be her father. Without her mother’s knowledge, Sophie invites all three to her wedding. What could possibly go wrong?
MAMMA MIA! Opened in London way back in 1999, and since then it’s played in three different West End Theatres (The Prince Edward Theatre, Prince of Wales Theatre and currently the Aldwych Theatre). The stage show has now been seen by over 65 million people, in more than 50 countries across six continents and has also spawned two of the highest-grossing box office movies of all time. But nothing beats seeing MAMMA MIA! Live on stage.
MAMMA MIA! was brought to the stage by the female-led team of producer Judy Cramer, writer Catherine Johnson and director Phyllida Lloyd. The show is inspired by a catalogue of hit songs by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus from Swedish supergroup, ABBA. Joyous, uplifting, and with a feelgood soundtrack that’ll be going round in your head (and your Spotify) for months, MAMMA MIA! is the West End show will have you keep coming back like a boomerang!

Five Things You Might not know about ABBA
We all love ABBA, but how much do you really know about Sweden’s most famous export? Here are five little-known ABBA facts:
1. ABBA’s costumes were designed to look outrageous as a way to save money on tax bills. Swedish law decreed that clothes were tax-deductible if it could be proved they were not ‘day wear’.
2. ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 in Brighton, despite the UK jury awarding in ‘null points’. Scandalous!
3. In a TV interview, Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant let slip that he had once visited a sex club with ABBA’s Benny and Björn to escape Agnetha and Frida!
4. ABBA were so massive in Australia that their 1976 TV special got higher ratings than the moon landings!
5. Most shockingly…one quarter of Swedish supergroup ABBA is actually Norwegian! Frida was born in Bjørkåsen, Norway in 1945.

The Stage

At its heart it remains an irresistible show, full of punchy and hilariously choreographed production numbers (courtesy Anthony van Laast), that is full of heart. The show treads a fine line between cheeky cheesiness and sincerity, but the cast must provide the latter or the former collapses, too. As the mother and daughter at the centre of its story, Helen Hobson and Charlotte Wakefield anchor it with both. Hobson lends mother Donna a tough, gritty heart, nowhere more so than in the anguished feeling she brings to The Winner Takes It All. Wakefield, who made her West End debut on this same stage in Spring Awakening, is radiantly lovely as daughter Sophie, whose attempt to discover her father’s identity drives her to a bigger discovery of her own.

But what is it that makes the show so appealing? Well, quite apart from having some of the finest pop songs ever written, Mamma Mia! is the ultimate feel-good tale of love conquering all. It is completely uncynical and consistently compelling – it's the perfect show for someone who says they don't like theatre, or who "doesn't do musicals".

I have seen Mama Mia twice over the years, but this current performance out shines them all. Such exciting and athletic dance routines and the cast is the best yet. Had a truly memorable afternoon with my granddaughter. And getting the Tuk Tuk back to London Bridge to catch the last train home at 6.06 (train strike)was the best decision ever. To see the crowds response to belting out Mama Mia songs was a real tonic-so many smiles and waves. Thankyou all.

The show is really good - it's hard to try not sing along. The cast are fantastic & Mazz Murray singing 'The Winner Takes It All' is just outstanding! The staff at the Novello are so polite & helpful. Having rocked up to the Novello on crutches and a boot for an ankle injury, they helped assist to get in all the way to the theatre seat, checking up that all was o.k. & if we needed assistance during the interval. They made the experience fantastic.

I am a tourist. I have arrived to London few days ago with my partner looking forward to see a musical but instead of having good time we have encountered a brutal behavior of two women who sat behind us screaming and shouting and laughing out loud all through the play annoying every one. It was insufferable. No usher even approached the two women let alone warned them. I was very disappointed to see that no action was taken by the theatre officials . We paid good money and our evening was destroyed. After this experience my partner doesn’t want to visit the theatre since she is horrified by the last experience.

The whole show was superb, especially the choice of songs. The encore with the whole ensemble was mind-blowing: Mamma Mia, Waterloo and Dancing Queen where I don't think there was a single person sitting in their seat. I also must thanks the friendly staff for being extremely helpful to me. I am profoundly deaf but with the use of the high-powered hearing aids I can follow most things. The staff gave me a 'radio-loop' to use during the show. Not sure if it ever has been tried out before I still struggled to follow the dialogue with the device. So I switched back to my 'music' settings on my aids and though I still had difficulties following the dialogue, I had no problems with the Abba songs. Thank you for the Music! We will be back for more.
