Tickets to the play War Horse at the New London Theatre are hard to come by and it’s not difficult to see why. Beginning its life as a smash-hit at the National Theatre, War Horse has now enjoyed overwhelming success on Broadway and the West End. Both critics and audiences alike have been bowled over by its visual effects and heart-rending story.
War Horse is an adaptation of Children’s Laureate (2003-2005) Michael Morpugo’s 1982 novel of the same name. It is the story of Joey, a horse that is sold to the Cavalry and sent to serve in France amongst the fighting and the misery of the First World War. However, his young owner Albert cannot forget him and embarks upon an arduous journey to find his beloved friend.
The endurance of love and the horrors of war combine in this astonishing production. Joey is vividly brought to life by the remarkable puppetry of Handspring Puppet Company's Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler and their team of expert puppeteers. This is a singular piece of theatre, unlike anything you will have seen before. It is technically accomplished and emotionally fraught, offering spectacular visuals and a dogged depiction of the despair of conflict. It is a true spectacle and not to be missed.

Amazing production with puppet mastery that keeps you entertained and wondering how. Brilliant.
My 15 year old son and I went to see Warhorse last night and had one of the best evenings that we have ever had at a London theatre. The horses were utterly amazing and the use of the stage and minimal props was fantastic. That my newly monosyllabic teenage son was engaged throughout the whole performance was testament to the amazing production that we were treated to. Such a shame that it is ending in London as we would definately love to see it again. You forget that the horses are puppets, their faces and movements are so realistic... look out for the goose! For once, a West End theatre production that was worth every penny... the cast are good too! There was a standing ovation at the end.
A thoroughly enjoyable show from beginning to end .. well worth it ..
I would recommend this show for all to see. The acting was great! The performance was awesome. The actors who were operating the horses are incredible. Oh yes, we mustn't leave out the birds and goose well done great show.
The show itself was excellent and came up to all our expectations. However I'm not sure that I read anywhere how many steps were involved in reaching the circle seats......not a good experience for two people with disabilities. It was also a pity there was a fairly lengthy technical "hitch" when we had a long stand (not good). However when I asked for a seat the official found us two which two younger people kindly gave up.
amazing story took my 9 ad 10 yr old my husband seen twice very moving kids absolutely loved this puppetry was stunning!!
Me and my partner came to see war horse as a birthday treat wonderful story telling great humour and very moving
The show was absolutely amazing. I'm not normally into going to the theatre but I would go and see this multiple times! The horses moved so much like real horses you forget that they aren't. And the simplistic set mixed with the creative ways they demonstrate certain things makes for a very impressive show. The only thing I didn't like was the fact a woman asked for us to donate to a charity at the end of the show. I think if they'd had somebody else do a speech about the show first it wouldn't have been such a mood killer.
Saw Warhorse last week. It is a great and moving story but event was marred by some very poor acting. The mechanical Horses were terrific but could have been more impressive if the operators wore brown gloves. Our seats (middle of row P) were fine but access was difficult for older people.
A hugely entertaining, imaginative, and moving experience. A triumph.
You can not imagine what this epic production will deliver. You have to see it to understand what has gone into the production to appreciate the impression it will make on your heart. Book now !!!!
Truly magnificent puppetry and all the actors /sets were top notch, making this the best production I have ever seen
First class performance from the cast. Sound quality perfect you could hear every word that was spoken. The horses were magical and performed so like the real thing as I have a horse at home it was just like watching him. Everything about the show was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Absolutely brilliant. So glad I saw it at original venue for atmosphere and therefore audience involvement. One of the best productions I've ever seen. Can't praise it enough!
An incredible physical feat of a spectacle! You simply must see this show before it closes!
Brilliant show! Have been wanting to see it for ages and it didn't disappoint! Just the right amount of humour, thrills and sadness leaving me almost drained. can't praise the show enough. A must-see before it closes!
I knew the story but was very moved. The puppeteering was quite spectacular.
War Horse, a must see, quick before it closes! excellent throughout
This may well be the best show I have seen in the West End
Why oh why did I wait so long to see it. What a fantastic show, spell bound and captivated from the opening line to the last. The story is so strong it even made me shed a tear on more than one time. If you haven't seen it yet the do, you wont want for a better show and you wont regret having made the effort.
Absolutely fantastic. Loved every minute xx
Excellent show well worth the money.
Very good.....would however recommend the evening performance without the school children fidgeting, fighting, talking, playing with iPads, throughout the show, a little off putting....
An excellent production. The actors were brilliant and the interaction with the horses were seamless. The sounds of the horse movement were realistic and the story telling was emotional as expected
The puppeteers convince us we are seeing live horses on stage, as they give us a flavour of hope alongside the anxieties of ordinary people experiencing WW2.
Really enjoyed War Horse. The puppetry was amazing.
Thoroughly enjoyed seeing War Horse. The acting was generally good, the stage direction and planning was excellent but the horse puppetry was incredible!!
We went to se this as s family. Our daughters were enthralled throughout the performance. The puppetry is amazing and by end of the performance we struggled to remember that the horses were not real. One thing to beat in mind if taking children is that can find the war images quite harrowing. Perhaps explaining trench warfare beforehand would be a good thing. We all had a fantastic evening, a shame it's run is coming to a close.
Fantastic 3rd time I have seen war horse shame it's coming to an end.
Absolutely incredible life-size 'puppets' used - it was amazing how life-like they were able to make them seem
Very moving performance with excellent performances by the actors. Well done to the performers in the horse costumes and the wonderful animations bringing them to life. A must see during its final few weeks at the new London theatre
What a brilliant show! Enjoyed it immensely, even if it was also very sad. Young or old, everyone seemed to be touched by the story and wonderful acting. Thanks for making our day trip out worthwhile
What a great show. It appealed to our teenage kids and my mum. The horses wwre tealsitic once yoi got used to them. Especially the ears. I would recommend the show to anyone
Was very good well worth booking to see this
Wow. What a tear jerker but well worth it. A very memorable night indeed and one I will never forget. The puppet mastery is unbelievable. The puppeteers are so very talented, they not only capture the life and movement of the horses but also the sounds. It is definitely worth watching and I would go again. A must see... so sad that it is leaving the stage in London
Brilliant been to many west end shows This is one of the BEST.
Brilliant as ever. Took son for 39th birthday, loved it. Congrats to all cast and crew , especially Tom Morris whose idea it was in first place !
Fabulous - the real stars are the people working the horses as they must have studied intensely the minute movements of horses to be able to replicate them so well. The story I knew from the book and film but I still ended up in tears! Incredible...
Amazing performance by all the cast. Loved the horses and animation. All actors exceeded themselves
Simply the best show I've seen. Having not read the book or seen the film my emotions were high throughout. Fantastic performance from entire cast. Such a shame it's coming to an end. I want to book tickets for my parents and just hope I'm not too late. Only downside was hearing in the background the bass of what I can only think was an adjoining night club from 9.30. Slightly strange when your head is in the early 1900's
You don't see the difference between real horses and puppets. They were able to show the horrors of the 1st world war. To was amazing that they introduced 3 languages in the conversations. Well done!
What a fantastic evening we had on Tues 2nd Feb! We really felt we were part of the show aswell. The play was well acted and so moving, I must admit I had tears in my eyes near the end.
An amazing show. The horses were lifelike and the people who worked them were incredible. Scenery simple but so effective.
Two words Absolutely fantastic
What can I say one of the most moving, and thought provoking productions that I have seen. We had a group of 36 people and every single one of us thought the show was superb !!!
Very good show
Amazing, thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, would recommend to all and sundry!!!!!
What an amazing performance. Highly recommed this to everyone. I couldn't take my eyes off of Topthorn and Joey
A truly memorable experience. A show that brought tears and laughter. The music and songs were superb. The horses became living entities as we hardly noticed they had operators inside them.
