The award-winning, critically acclaimed production of Martin Sherman’s Rose transfers to the Ambassador’s Theatre for 28 performances from Tuesday 23rd May after sell-out runs at Hope Mill Theatre, Manchester and The Park Theatre.
Olivier Award winner Maureen Lipman has performed with The National Theatre and The Royal Shakespeare Company and has starred in innumerable West End productions including Messiah, Wonderful Town, ReJoice, Glorious, Oklahoma & Daytona. For the last five years she has been delighting television audiences as Evelyn Plummer on Coronation Street.
Written by award-winning Martin Sherman whose other plays include Bent, Messiah, A Mad House in Goa as well as When She Danced. Films include Alive and Kicking and Mrs Henderson Presents as well as the Broadway Musical The Boy From Oz.
Rose, a woman whose tumultuous journey through anarchic times takes her from the devastation of Nazi occupied Europe to the allure of the American dream. Through the life of one woman Rose tells the story of a century where everything changed except the violence of the strong against the weak.
The original production of Rose was produced at the National Theatre and on Broadway in 1999. It is perhaps even more relevant today, with the plight of refugees and allegations of antisemitism continuing to dominate the news. This powerful production is a moving reminder of the harrowing events that shaped the last century.

This is an excellent production that I really enjoyed. Dame Maureen is great and holds the interest of the audience. The story is sometimes quite emotional, but also has elements of humour. This was certainly an outstanding and memorable performance that looked at Jewish heritage, history, identity and memory across the 20th century while Rose is sitting shiva. Sadly, the show is closing at The Ambassadors Theater on June 18th.

Maureen Lipman, transported us through her protagonist’s life journey. Heavy, poignant, sad, hard to hear, full of personal conflicts and yet heart warming and funny. Maureen is a brilliant actor 👏👏👏

Really good show , Maureen is such a great actress for her to be able to keep an audience’s attention for over 2 hrs solely by herself is amazing. So pleased I had chance to see this play before it ended.

A truly memorable experience. A story which in essence was one of hardship told with humour, honesty and bravery. Left a feeling of awe and realisation of the true meaning of making the best of what life can throw at you Humbling

I travelled from the Highlands of Scotland to see this and I'm so glad I made the trip. A wonderful performance by Maureen Lipman who guides us through a life of survival and opportunity which is utterly engrossing.

If you’ve only thought of Maureen Lipman as a comedian go and see her in the revival of Martin Sherman’s Rose. She plays a Ukrainian survivor of the holocaust in Warsaw. Now living in the United States, she has felt out of place her whole life, from her childhood in a Jewish shtetl in the Russian Pale of present day Ukraine, as a refugee after the end of the war in Germany and France, to America via the Exodus attempting to run the British Blockade of Palestine. A truly great and heart wrenching performance.

It was an outstanding performance,. Maureen Lipman very cleverly told the story of Rose. You should be very proud of this show and it’s safe to say there’s no chance of you getting Alzheimer’s, what a memory to sit alone and remember all that

Brilliant acting but poor acoustics. Lipman’s voice does not project sufficiently. I was in L row and I and many other spectators missed a great deal of the spoken words.

Maureen Lipman in her one woman show as Rose was simply AMAZING . She had the audience in her hand. Never have I heard a theatre so silent - a captivated audience. Sad, powerful and funny.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend due to illness. I lost my money as no refunds so I was disappointed. Apparently it got rave reviews and I'm sure I would have written a glowing one.

To be brutally honest I only went to see this play because my friend did and I dutifully dragged myself along thinking if it’s boring I can nod off. BUT it was AMAZING. I was captivated in the first second and was plunged onto a rollercoaster ride of emotions which left me breathless and begging for the interval to be short. The second half did not disappoint and by the end I felt like the 2 hours 20 minute performance was gone in a heartbeat. I wasn’t left begging for more because the play was perfectly scripted that it rounded everything up by the end. Maureen Lipman was legendary in this and was perfectly cast. Loved this so much. ❣️ On the other hand ………..

I thought Maureen Lipmans acting was superb and the story was very interesting. However towards the end of the first half I was restless in my seat and wanted it to end. I left at the interval.

I have no idea how she does such a superb performance on stage alone for all that time. Not once did I feel as if my attention wandered.

Dame Maureen Lipman is outstanding-or out-sitting us all on a wooden bench for more than two hours with a constant attention-grabbing performance as Warsaw ghetto survivor Rose! Quite apart from the extraordinary feat of memory and performance from this supreme exponent of the dramatic arts, the monologue manages to be both humorous, tragic, profound and educative all in the space of one evening's viewing.

We were in awe of Maureen Lipman’s seemingly effortless performance that totally held our attention for the full two and a half hours that she was on the stage. Stories of Rose’s harrowing past life were delivered in a very entertaining manner evoking all emotions from the audience. A thoroughly enjoyable evening!

I was very enthralled by Maureen Lipman and kept my attention for the first half. However I felt it was approx 15 minutes too long, and lost its way a little with the rights and wrongs of the Israel/Palestine tensions. Still well worth watching

Excellent performance, ran the gamut of emotions. Such wonderful story telling by one of our best actors. No need for an elaborate set for this piece, just subtle lighting changes.

Wow, how Maureen Lipman managed to stay on stage through all that emotion must be draining. A powerful ‘Least we forget’ story she told us from child to adult, still very current now. Full of admiration and respect, a tale worth telling!
