Michael Grandage directs Emma Corrin in Neil Bartlett’s "poetic reimagining" (City AM) of Virginia Woolf’s modern masterpiece - Orlando.

Born in the reign of Elizabeth I, our hero-heroine Orlando journeys through five centuries in this "rompish wild-goose chase through time, place and gender" (Guardian) to just one question; how do any of us find the courage to truly be ourselves?

Leading an eleven-strong company in a bold new staging, Olivier Award nominee Emma Corrin returns to London's West End in one of the most surprising stories in the English language. An inspiring vision of all bodies having equal rights to love.

Having part read the book aeons ago and really enjoyed the Sally Potter film I didn't know how it would be brought to the stage. As it turned out I had nothing to worry about. It was absolutely fantastic to get so much into 90 minutes. Astounding lead from Emma Corrin and all her supporting cast. A great production with minimal set and fantastic effects and lighting. It took a while to ' come down ' after believe me.

This play pays an exquisite homage to the original novel (as to theater itself: I found the idea of the chorus brilliant), mirroring its complexity of the emotional and intellectual content. I loved how the scenes passed through all sorts of different moods, always in a consistent way. The acting is superb from all the performers, with of course Emma Corring standing out for their natural way of shifting multiple times from male voice and gesturality to female ones. Maybe in my sensibility the ending is a bit too assertive, rather than leaving some issues answered, but it still proves a solid craftsmanship from the playwright.

Although we were disappointed to not see Emma Corrin in the lead, however, Oliver Wickam's portrail of Orlando was superb! Perfect casting! Thankyou Neil Bartlett for casting a non binary actor for the understudy. Deborah Findley was wonderful and the supporting team of actors made in all a memorable afternoon at the theatre.
