What’s Elf The Musical about?

Elf is the endearing tale of Buddy Hobbs – an orphaned baby who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. When Buddy is discovered, Santa and his elves decide to raise Buddy themselves - as an Elf.

Growing up unusually tall (and sadly lacking in Elf skills) Buddy just doesn’t fit in at the North Pole. Soon, Santa reveals the truth about Buddy’s identity and Buddy decides he must head to New York – in full Elf uniform - in search of his birth father. But Buddy quickly learns that his true father, a powerful businessman called Walter, works in the Empire State Building and is most definitely not on Santa’s good list.

After creating hilarious festive mayhem in Manhattan, including getting drunk on ‘syrup’ and turning Walter’s world upside down, Buddy falls in love. He finally learns that the greatest gift he could ever receive is the gift of family.

Of course, nothing is ever quite that straightforward, and when Santa’s sleigh crashes in Central Park, it’s down to Buddy to rescue Santa – and to try to save Christmas forever!

Elf The Musical awards

When Elf The Musical first opened on Broadway, it received a nomination for Distinguished Production of a Musical at the prestigious Drama League Awards. Five Things You Might not know about Elf

Theatre doesn’t come any more Christmassy than Elf The Musical, but how much do you know about the movie Elf The Musical is based on? Here are five festive facts about Elf:

1. Much of the movie was filmed on location in New York. That includes a sequence where Buddy walks through the Lincoln Tunnel. This caused several real-life traffic accidents as drivers gazed open-mouthed at a Will Ferrell-sized Elf.
2. Will Ferrell reportedly turned down $29 million to reprise his role as Buddy for an Elf sequel, saying that it would look “slightly pathetic” if he tried to squeeze back into those Elf tights a second time.
3. The film’s director, Jon Favreau, based lots of Buddy’s behaviour on his own 1-year-old son, Max. Elf is a family film in so many ways – screenwriter David Berenbaum was influenced by his father, who died when he was just eight years old. The storyline in Elf is strongly influenced by a grown-up David’s attempt to find out more about his dad.
4. Will Ferrell worked as a Santa impersonator in real life. Before his film career took off, Ferrell spent five weeks in an outdoor mall in Pasadena listening to kids insist they’d been good all year! Pretty good training for a career as an Elf.
5. Will Ferrell suffered terrible headaches on set. That was due to a combination of lack of sleep and the sheer amount of candy and sugar he had to eat during filming; even the cotton balls Buddy eats in the doctor’s office were made of candyfloss!

We saw this yesterday, 3 generations, and all thought it was very long-winded. Were expecting much more humour.
