What’s My Fair Lady about?
Adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play and Gabriel Pascal’s motion picture Pygmalion, My Fair lady is the tale of Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower-girl. Spotted on the street by pompous phonetics professor Henry Higgins, Eliza becomes an unwitting part of Higgins’ experiment to try to pass her off as a Duchess in British high society.
Higgins makes a bet with his friend, Colonel Pickering, that he can fool London’s upper classes, taking little account of what might happen to Eliza once his bet is won. On a trip to Ascot, Eliza’s beauty captures the heart of Freddy Eynsford-Hill, a young gentleman of means – but can he offer Eliza any more freedom than she has in her claustrophobic life with Professor Higgins?
My Fair Lady is far more than a rags-to-riches tale - Eliza Doolittle is a potent symbol of the enduring grasp that class had on British society in Shaw’s day; it’s a sign of how little has really changed that Eliza remains such a relatable character, and why we still root for her to triumph in a world of wealth and snobbery.
My Fair Lady songs
With one of the best-loved scores in musical theatre, Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady includes the classic songs I Could Have Danced All Night, Get Me to the Church on Time, Just You Wait, With A Little Bit of Luck, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, On the Street Where You Live, The Rain in Spain, Show Me and I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.
My Fair Lady awards

Five Things to know about My Fair Lady
We adore this classic rags-to-riches tale of Eliza Doolittle, a Covent Garden flower seller thrust into high society. Here are five fascinating facts we’ve uncovered about the West-End’s most socially mobile musical:
1. The George Bernard Shaw play, Pygmalion, upon which My Fair Lady is based, has its roots in Greek mythology. Roman poet Ovid took a tale from Greek folklore of a mythical sculptor who created a statue of the ideal woman, only to fall in love with his own creation.
2. George Bernard Shaw was none too keen on Pygmalion being turned into a musical. However, by the time Shaw died in 1950, producer Gabriel Pascal held the rights and approached Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II to write a musical version. The initial project came to nothing. Undeterred, Pascal then turned to librettist Alan Jay Lerner and composer Frederick Loewe. At first, even Lerner and Loewe struggled, and for a time, the project was put to bed. However, fortunately for us all, in 1954, Lerner and Loewe came back to Shaw’s story and created one of the greatest musicals of the 20th Century.
3. The show was originally given the working title “Liza” and then “Lady Liza”. However, Rex Harrison objected to the title, believing it overlooked his character. Inspiration eventually came from an unexpected source – the song “London Bridge is Falling Down”. Harrison was satisfied with the new idea, and My Fair Lady was born.
4. Rex Harrison had definite views about how My Fair Lady should evolve. As a dedicated fan of Shaw’s writing, he would often refer to his Penguin edition of the play during rehearsals. Alan Jay Lerner became so use to Rex shouting “Where’s my penguin?” that one day, he visited a taxidermist and bought a stuffed penguin. The next time the familiar cry came, the bird was rolled onto the stage – much to the amusement of Harrison, who kept it in his dressing room for the remainder of My Fair Lady’s run.
5. The role of Eliza was played by Julie Andrews on stage. Controversially, when the movie was cast, the film’s producers overlooked her in favour of Audrey Hepburn (whose singing voice was dubbed by Marnie Nixon in the movie). However, Andrews had the last laugh when she was cast as Mary Poppins instead, winning the 1965 Best Actress Oscar, beating Anne Bancroft, Sophia Loren, Debbie Reynolds and Kim Stanley.

This production was rarely clever with the moving sets and excellent presentation. Sound was rarely good as I could hear every word from back most row of the balcony, upper circle in other theatres The only trouble was the need for distance glasses because of the height which meant you could not see faces. Usual rip-off for the programme produced by Dywinters at £10!

My Fair Lady is a classic musical which still resonates today. This a good production with mostly excellent casting. Several understudies were playing the night we went (Charlotte Kennedy who played Eliza was very good indeed) and we suffered a 15 minute interruption due to a technical problem, but this did not really spoil our enjoyment of the show. Harry Hadden-Paton was a first rate Henry Higgins.

It was a brilliant show and amazing theatre, it was a shame that they had Technical Problems and the show had to stop twice which upset the flow.

My Fair Lady is a fabulous show. The staging, costumes and lighting is brilliant, the acting first rate, the singing and orchestral accompaniment world-class and the choreography wonderful. The bar staff are super efficient. The shop staff friendly and there was a great selection of items. I cannot flaw this show at all (save for the rather stern theatre attendant on the doors to the auditorium itself. Listening to how she spoke to theatregoers, she could do with some training in communication and delivery! The security guys on the external building doors were less severe than her!).

We enjoyed the show, however, the sound seemed very low and was only coming from where the stage was, so I had to really strain my ears to hear. I feel sorry for people sitting further back, as if we were in the stalls and struggled to hear, it must have been really difficult for them.

We brought my mother up to London. She’s 89 and uses a wheelchair. It was a really big effort that we all made. We found the musical too long. Hard to hear at times. Almost a bit boring in between the well known and much loved songs. The stage was impressive. The theatre is impressive. The staff at the theatre were lovely. The costumes were stunning. But alas the actual production itself was not that captivating. The second half was better. I feel bad writing a negative review as I know so much work goes into this by all the performers. But I also feel that when the ticket prices are so high the show needs to be good or even outstanding.

Really looking forward to seeing this musical ,but it was very slow to start and didn't really pick up, some prop movements were also slow and the London twang in some songs just wasn't there, and it should have been, thought that the ending would be something special with the fantastic songs that the show has in it ,it would have been good to put them into a compilation as a brilliant finale ,but the show ended with just bows from the cast then they just left the stage ,very disappointed .

This has to be the most beautifully put together show I’ve ever seen. The performers were incredible, believe-able and just immensely good at what they do. The costumes, scenery, music, all of it was classic but fresh and engaging at the same time. Eliza actress is so engaging to watch. Highly recommend this stage show of My Fair Lady. I read Pygmalion at secondary school many years ago and never got the depth of emotion from the play that I got from this stage performance.

What a delight for the eyes and ears! This performance was visually stunning, with dynamic and versatile staging and well-crafted choreography. The singing and acting was sublime from all cast members. I especially enjoyed 'On the street where you live' which had the most beautiful tone and energy.

The acting and singing was brilliant however we sat in the upper circle at the front tickets cost £85 per person but unfortunately it was very hard to hear the actors talking if you wasn’t aware of the story line then because of the lack of hearing the show wouldn’t have made sense. Sadly I know some other people that came on previous nights and they said that they had the same problem
