The Glass Menagerie
The Glass Menagerie
Six time Academy Award nominated actress Amy Adams makes her West End debut in a new production of Tennessee Williams's celebrated memory play, The Glass Menagerie directed by Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall Trilogy, People Places and Things, This House). Paul Hilton (The Inheritance, Lady Macbeth, A Very British Scandal), Tom Glynn-Carney (The Ferryman, Dunkirk), Lizzie Annis and Victor Alli complete the stellar cast.
Shattered by her husband’s abandonment, Amanda Wingfield’s steely focus remains locked on her future security and that of her children, Tom and Laura. Her determination collides with her children’s dreams and ambitions. While Tom feels trapped by his life in St Louis, the pressure Amanda forces upon her daughter to secure her future is crushing both their relationship and Laura’s fragile self-esteem. As attentions quickly turn to securing a suitor for Laura, the fine thread that connects dignity to desperation is pulled taut.

I’ve read this play many times and studied it. The play isn’t about the story it’s about the characters and how the actors play them. It’s a show you go to see how the characters are played. If you’re a Tennessee Williams fan like me then this play is one of his best written plays.

Good acting but very poor plot about a dysfunctional family that went nowhere. Members of audience falling asleep. A great shame.

Didn't go -- too hot! Annoying to have to do forego the (v expensive) cost of the tickets, but there you go

The title is driven not so much by the cast performances but the Play. It just felt something of nothing but overwhelming sadness, and frankly a wee bit drab. I don't feel it gave the actors a chance to shine; least of all the brilliant Amy Adams. Was a strange first choice for her west End debut. Sorry not to be more positive

A very strong cast anchored by the great Amy Adams. The director's adaptation of Williams' expressionist vision was impressive. The narrator as an older Tom defined the play as memory. The projected images of the father engaged the audience in expressionistic drama. Adams' Amanda elevates buoyancy and hope above quiet desperation, making the ending even more potent. Tom was edgy, Laura was fragile, Jim was humane, and the narrator was a perfect nexus for all characters.

Entertaining and thought-provoking. Good mixture of serious observations and lines with humour and wit.

Really fantastic play, Amy Adams performance is phenomenal and rather humorous. One of the best plays I’ve seen in a long time
