What’s The Phantom of the Opera about?
Hidden away in a lair beneath the 19th century Paris opera house, the brooding Phantom of the Opera conceals his disfigured face from the world. On stage in the world above, Carlotta, the Opéra’s resident Diva, is rehearsing for a production of Hannibal…but unbeknown to Carlotta, the Phantom has been tutoring Christine Daaé, a chorus girl. When Carlotta’s prima-donna demands become too much to bear, Christine is pushed forward. Her voice is mesmerising. Furious, Carlotta storms off, leaving the chorus girl to save the production.
In the audience is Raoul, Viscount de Chagny, who recognises his childhood friend Christine, and the two begin a passionate affair. However, Christine has also captured the heart of the mysterious Phantom of the Opera. As the show progresses, Christine is torn between her love for music, embodied by the Phantom, and her love for childhood sweetheart Raoul.
Christine’s descent into the Phantom’s lair is one of the most iconic scenes in the history of musical theatre – and one of the most beautiful. This gothic setting of candles and swirling mist upon a vast subterranean lake is worth the price of a ticket alone.
As the story unfolds, opera, murder and mystery, magic and intrigue weave together in an epic finale to one of the greatest ever love stories told on the West End Stage.

The Phantom of the Opera won Best New Musical at the 1986 Olivier Awards as well as a Best Actor in a Musical award for Michael Crawford. It has subsequently added Olivier Awards for Most Popular Show and the Magic Radio Audience Award. On Broadway, Phantom won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design and Best Lighting Design.
Five Things You Might not know about The Phantom of the Opera
We adore The Phantom of the Opera, so we wondered what gems we could unearth about this much-loved West End favourite? Here are five fun facts we’ve uncovered about the West-End’s most romantic musical:
1. Phantom of the Opera fans have their own special name – ‘PHANS’. ‘Phans’ have several dedicated facebook groups – if you love the show, just type in ‘Phantom Phan’ and you’ll see that the most popular group already has over four thousand members.
2. Ex-Phantom alumni have gone on to diverse careers both in and out of the world of Entertainment. The original Monsieur Firmin is none other than John Savident, who famously starred as Fred Elliot in Coronation Street from 1994-2006. Mary Millar, who originated the role of Madame Giry on stage, later played Rose in series 5 of Keeping Up Appearances. Sarah Brightman, who originated the role of Christine Daaé, went on to become one of the world’s highest paid classical music stars before training to become an astronaut, although in the end the trip was postponed due to family reasons.
3. During the first Covid-19 lockdown, the hearts of many London Phans were broken when images emerged online of the famous chandelier being removed from His Majesty’s theatre. Fortunately, its removal was only temporary while the theatre was refurbished, and changes made to the production ready for Phantom’s return.
4. Eagle-eyed viewers of the 2004 movie version of The Phantom of the Opera may briefly spot Ramin Karimloo playing Christine’s father. That’s remarkable, because he’s also played Raoul and The Phantom of the Opera on stage – making him the only actor to have played all three roles, including in the stage version of Phantom sequel, Love Never Dies.
5. The Phantom mask is custom made for each actor – no two Phantoms are ever the same!

My daughter and her husband came home raving about the staging. The music and the cast. Im exstatic they had so much enjoyment from it. Just a shame tge train service was not as good. Thank you. Thank you to the cast. Musicians the staging everything. God bless you all for such talents.

The acting, singing, dancing and stage props were all absolutely amazing! Such a brilliant performance. I've never been to anything like this before but have wanted to see it for years. I'm so glad that I did! I was absolutely mesmerised by it.

Amazing amazing amazing show! My friend and I got our seats upgraded when we arrived so we were sitting in the 5th row! We could not believe this as we are students and normally could not afford such wonderful seats. The show itself was jaw dropping wonderful. I did not know peoples voices could sound so beautiful and smooth. The execution of the show was brilliant. Shocking and exciting with beautiful costumes that were really a feast for the eyes. I would watch 1000 more times if I could. Thank you for a phenomenal show!

All trains were cancelled into London while on the train so couldn’t get there and ended up wasting a huge amount of money :( please be careful when booking as I have been told that I can’t get a refund nor exchange tickets.

An amazing show, and amazing cast and an amazing soundtrack. As soon as it begins you are transported and the power of the score is overwhelming. There is a reason this show continues to sell out over so many years. Third time of seeing and it still takes my breath away.

The overall performance was Outstanding. The only reason I don't give 5* is the fact that the theater kept let people in even after 20 min of the beginning of the show which was a bit distracting. Other that, everything that was going on on the stage was perfect from beginning to end.

The Fisrt time I watched This musical was back in the 1990s when I was a university studen. Last week I experinced it again with my 16 year old twins and it still moved and amazed me. In total I have seen it more than 10 times and still have the desire to watch it again in the future. Definitely the best musical ever…and although over the years I have seen numerous musicals, this still ranks AT the top of the list.

So, I’ve had the same French teacher for years and we have watched phantom of the opera on dvd in class. It’s sort of become a tradition in her class. The show was always amazing, but this is so much better. The actresses and actors were fantastic and the part of the chandelier dropping was better in person. The songs were performed astoundingly and I was entranced by the set and costumes it almost made it feel like I was there. This performance had me moved and they deserve a million more standing ovations! Bravo!

This is a must see if you have not seen the Phantom. Great cast that kept the story fresh and the songs well executed. If you have not seen the Phantom in 10 years or more then recommend that you add this to your list when in London. The first balcony seats, out from under the second balcony may be the best. BUT the balcony’s front banister prevents anyone sitting in other than the first row from seeing the front of the stage. This is a bit frustrating in the first part of the play where action is carried out near the front of the stage and you have to stretch to see what is going on. However, you get the full dramatic drop of the chandelier sitting in this area. One might consider moving to the stage level if you cannot get first row balcony seats. This is a minor tradeoff considering the overall performance culminating in a wonderful evening.
