On Blueberry Hill
On Blueberry Hill
“Beautiful. Mesmerising. Mysterious.”
The New Yorker
Following critically-acclaimed and sell-out runs in New York and Dublin, Olivier-Award winning Fishamble and Sebastian Barry’s universally celebrated play, On Blueberry Hill, comes to London’s West End for 8 weeks only.
Sebastian Barry is one of Ireland’s greatest living writers and the current Laureate of Irish Fiction. His novels and plays have won, and been nominated for, the MAN Booker Prize and the Irish Book Awards among many others. His novels include the international best sellers Days Without End and A Long Long Way.
“He is the crown prince of Ireland's majestic theatrical tradition.”
Newsweek
In Barry’s beautiful style, On Blueberry Hill features best of friends and worst of enemies Christy (Niall Buggy) and PJ (David Ganly), who are destined to share their lives for twenty years. As the two men reflect on the hope and torment of life outside - they slowly uncover the events that have led them to their world with explosive, bittersweet consequences.
Directed by Fishamble’s Jim Culleton, this new play is bursting with humanity as it explores forgiveness, survival, and ultimately, love.
“Ravishing…confirms Barry’s gift for finding the beauty in the everyday.”
Ben Brantley, New York Times

Very much enjoyed this play yesterday with two talented actors who made you want to laugh and cry. Imaginative storyline with rich descriptions of people, places and things. I instantly wanted to set off for the island off Galway.

Hard to describe how wonderful this production was. I am a fan of Sebastian Barry’s books and watching this performance gave me the same personal intimate intense experience. Superb actors who ran the gamut of comedy to pathos to deep love. Stunning story, sensitive presentation. Absolutely loved it and keep thinking about it still. Well done.

I loved Blueberry Hill so much. The language especially, was just beautiful, so thoughtfully written. The actors were brilliant. Believable, sympathetic and so moving. I was entranced throughout following their stories. I can thoroughly recommend this play on every level.

Lyrical, moving and mesmerising. The best theatre I have seen in a long time.
