“Taking this new Show to 80+ theatres around the country, has been a joyful birthday present to myself. I’ve played mainly in theatres I knew well as a young theatregoer and actor. On my birthday, I was in Bolton Town Hall where my dad used to work. It began last February with 15 theatres in Greater London and will end in Orkney.
Soon I will be back in London, for a limited season in the West End, raising much-needed funds for theatre charities.
As for the show? Ask someone who’s seen it. Come and find out.”
“The theatre event of the year” The Telegraph.
‘Warmth, wit and wizardry. In a line of 20th century legends including Gielgud and Olivier. Come one, come all and marvel’ The Telegraph
Ian McKellen is the consummate actor and at 80n is still holds the audience entranced. This was a wonderful evening.
Loved Sir Ian. It was a real privilege to be in the presence of such a talented and funny actor who makes texts come to life in a way that few others can achieve.
It was a wander through UK theatre history tour, & of Shakespeare. Full of light, tender and humorous moments. A fantastic night out. Loved it.
What an amazing man! This was truly one of the most memorable evenings I have ever had. Sir Ian is not only talented, wise and enthralling but self -deprecating and humble. To experience such a performance was a a privilege .
The play is amazing there is no other word to describe it. Such a positive vibe. The actor full of energy, captivating the audience with each sentence. Yet such a humble person.
Ian McKellen was brilliant. Such a wonderful actor and his samples of Shakespeare were outstanding. He is so funny to watch and listen to. We enjoyed every moment of the performance.
What an astounding night :-) Brought my son (one of the few teenagers) who also loved it. We might be slightly biased by the fact he went up on stage to be with 'Gandalf' and try his sword
Extraordinary man. Left the theatre in utter awe of Sir Ian. Perfect evening.
An excellent, funny and informative performance
Ian's passion for the theatre is undiminished, infectious and a joy to share Loved his stories, anicdotes and felt privileged to be able to have a small glimpse into his private life and the world of theatre and film Thank you Ian for your tireless efforts to spread the word of the magic of the theatre to the masses X
Love his performance, he truly enjoyed what he does and he has a lovely presence Highly recommend this entertaining show.
Absolutely fantastic, what a great afternoon entertainment.
An honour to attend a thoroughly delightful and entertaining and personal show by a legend of Theatre!
Do not hesitate to book a seat and experience a master at work! An extraordinary journey from start to finish!
I go to the theatre a lot! I love Shakespeare. ] This was one of the best theatre evenings I have ever experienced - my husband and I were overwhelmed to see an actor of that calibre, at 80, entertain, reminisce and perform to an extraordinary level - our love of the theatre was re-ignited last night
What a wonderful captivating performance. Thoroughly enjoyable!
He covered the whole gamut of characters from young to old, most of whom he had played. His memory for the chosen speeches was phenomenal. I remember seeing him as Widow Twanky at The Old Vic and his take on it on Thursday night was hilarious. A total treat.
I went as bought the tickets for my partners birthday, however if I didn’t describe myself as a fan before I would now. He was engaging, funny and demonstrated his excellent acting skills.
What a lovely evening at the theatre. I could have sat there all night listening to Ian Mckellen story's and his trip through his life. Wonderful memories of his life in theatre and film. He had the audience in the palm of his hand. A great actor and story teller. Wonderful evening.
Outstanding!! Entertaining! A must see
A brilliant evening with one of our greatest actors. Full of laughs, anecdotes, and brilliant acting, well worth a visit and all the proceeds go to Charity, well done Ian McKellen!
I bought the ticket 5 months ago and I did not expect it would be an unforgettable experience. His almost 3h performance is outstanding. Sir Ian McKellen is brilliant.
What an absolute honour to be able to sit and listen to, laugh with and marvel at the life and talent that is Ian McKellen - spelt with an E!!! I felt humbled watching him perform pieces and poems to perfection. I feel quite emotional to have been in the presence of, let’s face it, one of the greatest actors of all times.
Overt promotional of pro-homosexual content in the first half was disappointing and I felt lacked integrity . If the show was promoted as proselytising 'gay' content OK but it was not marketed that way and folks need to know in order to make informed judgement The second half was clear clean and wonderful
A great night with this funny and fascinating raconteur who takes you through his life on and off stage bringing in a host of the best in British acting talent along the way
It's a fully interactive 3 hours that never gets tiresome because of the brilliant blend of flat out humor, poignant personal revelation, and engrossing acting brilliance that earned him a knighthood from Her Royal Majesty. And don't forget he's the cinematic face of both Gandalf and Magneto!
Wow what a show. The first half was the story of Sir Ian`s life with a reading from Lord of the rings. His hat and sword from the films shown. Very funny tales. Second half was a chance for the audience to name all of Shakespeares plays which Sir Ian told a personal story of a performance relaated to each play or a tale of another actor. At 80 no signs of his age or slwoing down. A truley magical night of the UK`s greatest living theatre actor.
Sir Ian McKellen had the audience in the palm of his hands for the whole evening. I was glad I was able to secure tickets for the sold out event. Sir Ian was very entertaining and surprisingly nimble for his age. It was a very enjoyable evening.
This was a brilliant show from a brilliant performer. Well worth going to see.
I quote my 14 year old.."Thanks for taking me Mum. It was Awesome. So interesting."
His performance was amazing and his extraordinary humanity shined through. Hope this show comes to NY so my family and friends can also have the pleasure of witnessing one of the greatest actors of our time
I am so extremely happy to have had the chance to watch an actor of this calibre perform. Such an eloquent personality. The whole performance was filled with marvellous anecdotes of his life. His way of speaking is so warming that I enjoyed Mr. McKellen with an e very much. Thank you.
An amazing night with one of our best actors. Funny, cleverly crafted and felt totally unscripted even though it must have been. Sir Ian has been know for his mastery of Shakespeare and that couldn’t have been more evident than in the second half. Sir Ian, is a master of his craft and at the same time like Shakespeare can talk to everyone. A great man both in the show and as a human being. Don’t be the fool who misses this major event. If you can find any tickets left but them without hesitation, you will not be disappointed.
He is outstanding
It was brilliant, so talented and very original.
This was a superb show, my friends and I were hugely impressed with the energy, humour and efforts of Ian McKellen. Such a great experience, and Ian is a quite remarkable actor and man.
Ian McKellen was spellbinding as usual! It was a wonderful evening. He was witty, charming, profound and utterly brilliant! We loved every second!! It was a truly special evening
Great Show A must See
A very interesting performance. Ian McKellen was funny as well as knowledgeable. We heard about his family life, his work from early days onwards, his time at Cambridge and all the people (well known usually) that he knew. In the second half, he concentrated on Shakespeare's plays. A very enjoyable afternoon.
Such an absolute privilege to hear all the stories about his life and career. Myself and my daughter loved it.
Feel privileged to have seen Sir Ian on stage, particularly enjoyed the first half and overall watching him transform from narrator to character. Seeing him greeting the audience and collecting for charity at the end was also amazing.
Absolutely loved this. Wasn't sure what to expect but was enchanted. The second half was a little long so would suggest keeping it a little shorter and lighter.
Cannot rate Ian's one person show highly enough, it was enthralling and engaging trip through his life and fantastic times. Not to be missed
Thrilling to see and hear Sir Ian's comnand of monologues and his interpretations. Anecdotes re acting and his life were entertaining and gave insight into the life of acting. Audience was receptive. Disappointed that it was hard to hear Sir Ian from middle stalls. A personal reservation - I acknowledge his sexuality but there was too much time spent as far as I was concerned, on that aspect of Sir Ian's life which I had read or learnt about in other places eg TV interviews.
I found it amazing that Ian McKellen, aged eighty, can convey so much passion, wit and energy in over two hours on stage. And then he rushed off stage to be ready with a bucket to collect donations towards theatrical charities in the foyer afterwards. ! Not at all the "luvvy" evening I was expecting.
I wasn’t sure what to expect but I came away feeling that I had just been part of the most wonderful moments in theatre. Warmth, humour and marvellous performed pieces. Excellent staging and an enormous sense of privilege to see a grandmaster share the major steps of his life with generosity and humility. I will treasure it always.
Ian McKellen (better get the spelling right) took us through his life and career. And the complete plays of Shakespeare. Often hilariously funny ; a mix of anecdotes and recitals from his life before and during acting.
The warmth that came over to the audience from this outstanding actor was wonderful. He engaged the audience from the beginning. I am sure that all that went to see Ian McKellen have followed his career in one way or another and just adored watching him act. A great evening.
